Any thoughts and experiences with this gun? Looking to make it my new woods gun while hunting/hiking.

I have the Glock 20sf as my woods gun and I like it

Do yourself a favor and if you get ammunition to practice with, do NOT cheap out and get the weak cheap stuff, either practice with what you intend to use as your woods load (I use Doubletap hard casts) or if you’re gonna use FMJ, atleast get the SIG FMJ that’s an actual heavy hitter hot load, not the cheap stuff like Sellier & Bellot or others that make you feel way more accurate than you are with a 10mm   :twocents:

Also I got a drop leg holster for it and I’d suggest something like a shoulder or chest rig. I’m selling my drop leg not because it’s a bad holster I just don’t think it’s the right choice for a glock20 filled with 200gr hard casts  :chuckle:

I do love the ballistics of the 10mm for woods defense, it’s the best you’ll get from a semi auto.

If you haven’t yet check out chukes outdoor adventures on YouTube he’s a guy who lives in Alaska in griz country and swears by his Glock 20. He also does holster reviews for it

Hope I helped  :)

Great stuff, thanks. I have a pretty good spot on my pack belt that I put my holster on, planning on keeping that the same. Good info on the ammo. That is spendy stuff, but burning a couple boxes to be sure where I'm hitting would be well worth it. Might end up reloading for it so I can actually shoot it without feeling a hole being burned in my wallet.

I personally like the glock 29 with the gunfifghters chest holster.   Hard to go wrong with the 10 in grizz country.  Very accurate gun with plenty in the magazine.

Agreed, that’s my set up as well.  Gunfighters Inc. Kenai is an awesome holster but not cheap.. Neither is a lot of stitches or,  your life.  Only downfall is I can’t wear my binoculars on my chest when wearing the Kenai or, at least not where I like them to be and have the Glock handy.   :twocents:

Springfield has a couple new 10mm out, they may be worth taking a look at as well.

Yes hand loading is not something I’ve ever ventured into yet but 10mm is definitely a hand loader caliber, haha.

I just brought it up because the first time I took my g20 to the range I was shooting the s&b 180gr FMJ and was pretty accurate, the recoil felt light, then when I shot some hardcasts it was all crazy.

Last time out I tried the sig (which you can occasionally get on sale for about 19$ btw, much more reasonable) and when I switched to my other ammo it was the same amount of recoil/snap as the FMJ

I bought one this fall to replace a 41 mag that was my go to woods gun.
Lately going alone felt I need more capacity
Got a decent deal on full size G20, accurate shooter

started shooting with Blasers, Cabelas had Herters on sale so grabbed a couple boxs for play, will end up getting a box of hardcasts for woods carry.
Got some hollow point sigs also but not sure on hollow points for in woods bear stopping power.

Holster wise I like a cross-draw, but didnt feel the holster I bought was secure enough ( no snap) so changing that up and will sell it if anyones interested in it

Just found BlackOvis.com had the Kenai chest holsters on sale for $135 and then had an additional 20% off on website coupon and free shipping
So new Kenai gunfighter holster ordered for $108, pretty good deal so if your looking for a quality chest holster- dont wait

FWIW GS Holsters while less known makes a better for the price chest holster than the Kenai. You can get one for 75$ or the “gen II” for 95$ (the cool colors are 10$ extra)

If you look at Chukes outdoors in YouTube he does a review of both and admitted that GS is a better value and even dis regarding price he likes the GS better. I have it for my g20 and love it

Been eyeing a 10mm as well for a few years now. I carry my 9mm all the time in the woods and I use the Alien Gear Molle holster and it's amazing(I carry it on my hip strong side). The only thing is that you have to have molle webbing on your pack where you want to carry and lucky for me my Kifaru pack has molle around the waist belt so it fits perfectly. I never notice it on me, rides very well and when it rains I don't have to worry about it as much sense it's kydex. For the price I am very happy with it and when I do have the cash for a 10mm I will be buying another one for sure. I love the 10mm round, hate the cost of ammo and the limited options but it's a great woods gun. Just my  :twocents:

No way do I want my holster attached to my pack. If you're one of those guys who eats, rests, and poops with your pack on, maybe that's a great idea, but if you don't, where is the gun when the pack comes off?  I'll take a good holster connected to my person, please.

I’m in the market for a G20. My plan is to run the buffalo bore 220 grain hard casts. This load harnesses the full potential of the 10mm. I’ve read that you need to upgrade to a 22 lb recoil spring and a aftermarket barrel like a lone wolf or KKM. The stock glock barrels don’t do well with hard cast bullets. Anyone experience this?

That's a fantastic point, I would love to try a chest rig as I've always heard that is comfortable and I like having the firearm right there.

I’ve gone to the new Alaska Guide Creations holster and running it attached to my bino chest rig. The holster removes easily to attach to belt when in camp. Will test this set up over the next year to see how I like it. Taking to Alaska this summer for hiking and fishing trips in POW.

I bought the Kenai chest rig for my Redhawk 45 LC, bad mistake. Fits nice and wears nice but with the holster molded to the shape of the gun the cylinder form on the inside part of the holster pushes into your chest, not very comfortable. May not be the same on a semi. Like said before, being hard molded plastic it's noisy. Mine's for sale, left hand.

A 22 lb recoil spring is a good idea, and it'll still function fine with the milder loads too.

The stock barrels do fine with cast bullets, as long as the bullets aren't undersized. If they are, they'll lead up aftermarket barrels too. Most of what's said about cast bullets in Glock barrels is pure fabricated rubbish that just keeps getting repeated. I shoot cast bullets most of the time, in a bunch of different Glock models and calibers, so I'm not just guessing.

Check out Killer-Innovations out of Tumwater for a barrel. Rick is making some really cool barrels. Maybe not 10mm, but ask.

One option for a chest rig that converts from chest to pack belt molle webbing to normal belt is the US Army Surplus M12 holsters, which you can get pretty cheap, and which allows either side belt carry, left or right handed.

https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1918357627/military-surplus-m12-holster

Add a chest harness for chest carry.
https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1336544952/bianchi-m13-chest-harness-nylon-black

Add a molle adapter to fit to your pack belt.
https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1338262665/safariland-molle-locking-system-mls-15-holster-locking-fork-polymer

It's a pretty versatile and bombproof setup.

I have had my Gen3 short-stroke and fail to eject with the 21# recoil spring, so be sure to try it out if you plan to carry lighter loads with the stronger recoil spring.

Curious to know how this rides and how smoothly the gun comes out of it. I don't have my bino pack straps cinched down super tight so I'm picturing the gun flopping or bouncing around while walking and hard to pull from the holster without pulling the whole holster.

Yea I’m curious how it will work in practice.  I like the torso straps fairly snug so may be ok .  I’ve worn it around the house and it felt ok. Need to do some hikes with it wearing a pack to get a good feel for it.

What barrel issue has been experienced with the hard casts?

P.S.  it's my favorite pistol ever.

I ran the Glock 20 gen 4 10mm this season and loved it but.Finding a good  holster has been difficult so far.I wore the Kenai chest holster and my bino rig ran underneath of it not very comfortable and wore heavy.A good side holster for this would be a game changer.

I have the 40mos and the Gunfighters Inc. Kenai chest holster.  Only time the holster is load is when i draw. And if you are able to pull it out slowly its not bad.  I figured if i have to draw fast i don't mind it being noisy.
I also hang my binos over the top hanging below.  Not a issue.  You get used to it after awhile and forget it's there. Hard to hide though if you go in a restaurant or store with it on. So i usually leave it in the car. Which i don't care for.

I’d vote for the G40. Shoot it and see - more accurate, easier to aim, quicker follow up because it has a little more mass but you will never notice the extra weight on your chest. Shot half a dozen different loads and the buffalo bore 220s had by far the best penetration. Very close to a 44 mag through wood blocks. The Kenai chest holster just needs a little electrical tape to quiet it down. I wear my binos right over it and can still draw easily, but I just use a bino harness and not a full case.

So that’s my plan also last two posts are pretty much what I’m gonna plan to do
Bino  buddies over the top of it and I’m not too worried about conceal carry cause I just wear an over shirt over it if I go into a restaurant and I’m fine

Darn spell check.  Loud  not load. I have a bino harness without case. Works great over the top and under the 40. I sure feel safer in camp at night with 40 strapped to my chest.

First trip out with the Kenai gunfighter I don’t think it’s noisy for sitting or walking
there is some noise when you draw the weapon but I’m not planning to hunt with it
I put the moleskin on the inside chest side to keep it from sliding
I really like it
easy on and off and doesn’t really interfere with my predator calls daypack or my Bino buddies
And didn’t see shat

Well you’ve all inspired me to spend some money. Picked up a glock 20 last night from MKR Tactical here in Gig Harbor. Had them install some Trijicon night sights. I have a Jager guide rod and ISMI 22# recoil spring in the mail. Picked up some Underwood 200 grain and 220 grain flat nose ammo. Stand by for range report.

Thank goodness.

You needed another firearm.

It did cause a temporary marital issue. “Really you need another handgun”? She said. I shrugged and said “freedom isn’t free”.  I didn’t get a response so I think she bought it...at least until next time.
