Title: Big Blacktails
Post by: 7mag. on March 20, 2009, 04:14:24 PM
Let's see if we can salvage a similar thread, and post some pics of above average Blacktails. No drama please, if you don't have anything nice to say, please don't say it.

7mag, thanks for starting this thread I will get some pics posted this weekend once I get out to the house and take a pic of the one we have mounted. Will also try and get a pic of the racks we have outside on the barn too. Lots of big Blacktail racks were justed nailed on the wall, wish we had the ones back that have been give away and knife handles made. I am sure there was more than one given away that would have made minimum book.

OK Lets stop  :beatdeadhorse: and post some dandies here.

This is the 4x6 I shot about 9 years ago, he weighed right at 300 lbs. on the hoof.  Hanging it looked like a cow elk next to my buddies 3x4 he shot 2 days earlier.

this is what is hanging around my brother's house, that are safe as long as they stay put, due to home owners assoc.

Here is one of my pet bucks.  He needs a couple more years on him to be a shooter but I don't shoot my pets.  (Except for beef).

Literally popped my shoulder out trying to drag him 200 yds.  Could not even hold a cup of coffee in my left hand for about 6 weeks, I would drop it.  That is what the "Yacolt Burn" used to produce.

This is my 08 buck.  I shot him in a god forsaken spot on th breaks of the Klick.  I know he is technically not a true blacktail but I can tell you there isn't a stitch of mule deer in this guy.

BLRman, what makes your deer not a mule deer?
Title: Re: Big Blacktails
Post by: Karl Blanchard on March 21, 2009, 11:31:42 PM
some people would call it a bench leg but it was definitely a blacktail.  Small ears big black tail. shot in 578 so according to the state of washington it is a blacktail.

It is a benchleg.  Just because it has short ears and a bushy black tail doesn't hide the fact that it has other mulie characteristics.  If you shoot a buck within 20 or so miles West of the Cascades, it probably has some mule deer in it.  West Klickitat is definitely one of those units where the genetics are blended.

I know this doesn't qualify as a big one or a decent one but it's the only good BT I have and it was with a bow. A 4x4 shot close to Black Diamond is anyone gonna dispute weather it's a true BT?

Drive by it every day and bike around it too, have seen several nice 3's and the tallest 4x blacktail I've ever seen, around 24" tall. He hangs in one area often, saw him without his headgear about a month ago, still looked fat and healthy.

My dad and I saw two that I could not believe were blacktails, One sounds about like that 4x4 you describe, but the other was an honest 26 wide main frame 4x4 and had two 4-6 inch cheaters comin out either side. It was an incredible buck and the biggest I have ever seen. They should put a youth permit in there :D

this is a buck a family member owns, unfortunetly it is only sheds but i believe they were found somtime in the 50s or 60s. hes got an inside spread of 22in, and is a smmetrical 6x6 with on sticker coming out and has eye guards. no idea what he'd score seeing as it would loose major points for being a non typical but i'd think it'd atleast gross in the 160s some where

Only if it was shot in Eastern Washington... :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

Believe the "line" was re-adjusted by DFW, as far was blacktail/ muley cutoff in the Columbia gorge area, long overdue. Now if we can just get California DFW to realize their coastal "mountain" range is nothing more than a big hill, we can adjust that line too:chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
