My ex work partner Christine shot a cougar and wants to know where to get it processed. Any suggestions? I'll see if she will let me post a picture. She's a member here, but still out hunting.
Help me out guys...
-
where is she located?
-
Right now, I think near Rimrock. But is from Yelm area.
-
I never killed one but the guys I know who have just take the back straps and most of the big muscle groups off of the hind quarters and leave the rest. Most processors usually have a minimum so unless its a monster you'd probably be paying a ton for not a lot of meat.
-
Kinda what I was thinking. Just putting out feelers... Again, any and all suggestions appreciated.
-
Tell them thanks for ridding rimrock from one more kitty cat!
-
Don't waste the front shoulders, plenty of meat to turn into burger.
Pretty easy to do it yourself, pull the backstrap and grind the rest, or save a few larger muscles out of the rump for steak or pot roast.
I'd offer in trade for a piece of backstrap, if I was closer. ;)
Congratulations to the shooter!

If all you are needing is burger ground, I can do that here at the house. Grinder, mixer and vac pack. I am in Kent. If it is more than that, i dont know. Never even set eyes on a dead cougar so I dont know how it should be cut up.
-
I'd probably bone it all out and have it made into pepperoni sticks. Otherwise I'm not sure I could eat a cat. I'd go to Northwest Sausage and Deli in Centralia.

Im in Naches and would be glad to help skin for taxi and bone the meat.
PM me if you want.
-
Excellent meat wish I was closer
-
Stewart's Meats, on SR 507, between Yelm and McKenna. I cannot vouch for their service, but they do handle wild game.

Just butcher the same as a deer, pretty much the same muscle groups. ;-)

I'm sorry if I offend anyone, but that is a waste and they should be ashamed of themselves if they do that. Cougar meat is excellent and makes great burger and sausage too.

:yeah:
Stewart's does all my processing for me and I've never had an issue. I think the charge for a cut and wrap is about $.90 per pound with an $80 minimum.

No need to be sorry! That is wasting meat

She's got it skinned and meat cooling or cooled. Hard to communicate where she's at. I guess it's a big cat. She's pretty pumped about it. I believe she'll bring it back and get it done. I'll let you all know and maybe post pictures if she'll let me.
Thanks again for the input...

So if you don't pick a cougar clean you should be ashamed of yourself?? What about my friend who shot a 200# cat 2500 verticle feet down in a hole. He took out the head and hyde and all the meat he could get in one trip and left the rest. Should he be ashamed?
-
It's not required by law for anyone to eat cougar, it's a personal preference if you want to eat it or not. :twocents:
Congrats to the lucky lady!

Pretty sure he meant it's a lot to pay to have it processed when it's a relatively smaller animal to cut up.

Good for her! I hope a picture of the cat makes its way back here!

I really couldn't care less if someone kills a cougar and doesn't keep all of the meat, or ANY of the meat. I've been a licensed hunter for about 38 years and it's only been in the last couple of years that I would have even considered using the meat of a cougar if I ever killed one, and that's because I've read on this forum that people actually eat cats, and some people say it's good. But it's still a very foreign concept to me that people would eat a cat. But either way, if the meat gets left in the woods I have no problem with that. Something WILL eat it, and a dead cougar is the best kind of cougar.

I’ve never seen so much cougar sign as I did in the Rimrock this last September. We all had our heads on a swivel at all times. Thank your friend for taking one out :hello:

It's required though to not allow the meat to go to waste, right? I'm not aware of any exemptions in the wastage laws in Washington to legally leave the meat in the woods.

You are not required to take any cougar meat home. Wastage laws do not apply to cats (or dogs for that matter).
-
They've figured out what they want to do. Thanks again. She sent another text saying she measured the distance from where she was and where the cat lay dead. 41 feet, and they used a tape measure. :yike: A little spooky if you ask me.
-
It's not required that you eat the meat but it IS required that you post pictures in a thread like this!!!!

Isn't it considered big game?

It is big game but there is an exception that allows one to not have to take the meat.
(68) "To waste" or "to be wasted" means to allow any edible portion of any game bird, food fish, game fish, shellfish, or big game animal other than cougar to be rendered unfit for human consumption, or to fail to retrieve edible portions of such a game bird, food fish, game fish, shellfish, or big game animal other than cougar from the field. For purposes of this chapter, edible portions of game birds must include, at a minimum, the breast meat of those birds. Entrails, including the heart and liver, of any wildlife species are not considered edible.

BTW - congrats on the cougar. Well done. :brew:

Looks like a big cat to me. Congrats and thanks for sharing.

What's up with it's ear? Did the Hunter, talk it to death? :chuckle:

She'll be back in town today, I'll have to ask her about that. Your comment was pretty funny..... :chuckle:

good size cat

Looks like some big paws! Congrats to her

Large for a female cat. Of course, any cat over 2 pounds is pretty big and needs to be gotten rid of... kinda hate cats. Don't mind a kitten, but they always grow up..... >:(

Thanks Curly! I wasn't aware of this.

Hide and head off and gutted weight was 106 pounds. Nice big cat.

Love dead cougar pics.

I never ate cat before and dont think I ever will. If I do get a chance to shoot a cougar I will offer it up.on here.

I don't think you can legally trade game meat.

Got any pics of the 200 pound cougar? It would probably be a world record.

If it hasn’t been processed yet she might want to ask to have a rump roast cured n smoked like a ham roast. Delicious!!!! The rest into pepperoni.

I’ve seen tons of cougar sign around 666 Yelm area off 510 and haven’t been back since about 2 weeks ago. just out of curiosity where was it taken so that I may feel a little more comfortable knowing the coast is clear. Much appreciated.

Yes I’m serious. I’m not asking for her/his hunting coordinates. Just curious if it’s the same cat in the same area that I was hunting. I saw tracks, skat as well as claw scratching on a tree base similar to house cats claw at a scratch post. I’m new to the PNW, any help or information would be greatly appreciated.

I can honestly say after my cougar hunt last year with Bearpaw Outfitters I have a completely different understanding of just how many cats are probably out there and how much ground they cover and actually overlap each other.
They are allowed to hunt with dogs, they take cats every year and there are new cats right back in the same area for them to harvest the very next year.
My guess is this is not the same cat that you saw tracks for and even it was there will be a new one in that same area next year.
Cats are curious so I am sure you have and will be watched whether you know it or not but the likelihood of you getting attacked are pretty slim. You probably have better odds of tree falling on you in the woods than a cat attacking you.
-
@rainier10 thanks for the info! I’m sure I’ll see one eventually, I’m just not excited to face off with one. I’ve been still hunting but I’m now going to jump in a tree stand and get a birds eye view. :chuckle:

I'd love top face off with one, I would win.... :chuckle:

 I sure hope I see him before he sees me.

What? :dunno:
Look at the mangled head and rear leg.Do you know of any reason that a firearm would inflict those injuries? In the last 2 years I've picked up 3 roadkilled deer and past up quite a few that were mangled beyond salvage. The picture looks to me like a head shot from a suv not a 300 win mag.

Wow. Good imagination you have. I'm not seeing any of the things you mentioned.
