Title: Late Tag Bucks
Post by: WAcoueshunter on November 08, 2018, 11:25:04 AM
It's November 8.  Usually we have several posted by now.  I know it's been warm, and herds are down.  But there must have been a few hit the ground by now.  Come on hunters, post them up!

I would if I had one to share.  This is my first quality deer tag hunt and I thought it would be easy (or at least easier than the general season)!  Not so much.  I've seen a total of one small buck and some does.  Maybe the cool clear nights has them eating then and not wandering during the day?

Should be prime right now for morning and afternoon activity with cooler weather and no moon. Cover ground and glass until your eyes hurt and then glass some more.

I've glassed a lot but have traveled less (although I covered 6 miles the other day).  I've been relying on ambushing deer coming from day cover to night feeding areas where I've seen a lot of sign.  So, most nights and mornings I've sat a spot for the first (or last) few hours of light.

While that's not a bad tactic, it doesn't seem that it's been working so I'd switch things up. Deer this time of year are highly mobile, especially the bucks. If I was you, I would move fast and cover ground. Pull up to a cut, glass it thoroughly but quickly, then move on to the next one. The only time I'd sit still this time of year is if I had does in a spot, or I knew for a fact that there would be deer coming into a spot in the evening. The last weekend of the general season, my Dad and I did 20 miles covering cuts. 8 of those miles were walking into and out of our hunting area. I'm sure we walked by good areas and probably even walked by animals because we weren't "thorough", but I was able to effectively check off my list several places and then when I found sign, I slowed down, and found animals. We had 2 legit opportunities at nice deer that day.

If you have a lot of sign in the clear cuts but you aren't seeing the animals during daylight hours, try getting into the timber above or below them, find a good trail and hunt that. Often the bucks are traveling the trails trying to catch the scent of a hot doe around the food sources. They won't expose themselves until they catch that scent or see a doe and follow her.

I'll post up my Satsop buck I shot last night a little later today. I had a hard time finding bucks too, and was running out of time, (though I'd get it done the first week so took that off), but I'm real happy with the beautiful deer I found. They're out there, and I bet the next week will be peak rut.

Thanks 7mmfan, sometimes it just takes someone nudging in a different direction to mix it up enough to get it done.  I’ve got 2.5 days left to hunt, I’ll move more until I get one.

The deer action has been pretty quit for the last week. Just the last 2 days the rut has been picking up again here. I saw a brute yesterday when I was checking one of my cameras.

Extremely slow in my neck of the woods, still nocturnal large concentrations of doe's on the apples with no bucks present. Last year I saw the heavier rut activity from Nov 20th thru dec 4th. Then it slowed to just a few does being pushed. Seems to be shaping up that way again.

Deer numbers are way down everywhere.  It’s going to take some work and luck.  It’s possible as my photo card will show.  Keep at it.

I saw 7 legal bucks today. 1 was an 18" 4 point.
