Title: Montana 2018
Post by: buglebuster on November 16, 2018, 07:52:10 PM
Montana was good to me again this year! There were a few B tags left over so I decided to buy 2 of those along with my general tag. First day was spent driving around getting a feel for the land, as it was a new place. Checking out all the spots I had pinned on ONX. Right before dark we spotted a doe just up a hill from the road. I decided to go after her. I walked up the hill and she was gone! I slowly walked down into the draw and finally picked her out 60 yards or so across liking at me. Settled the crosshairs on her head and shot. Down she went! Once I got over to her I looked back across and saw a second doe. Debated not taking her but couldn’t resist with how easy it was! Settled the crosshairs on white patch on her neck and shot. Down she went! A doe double!

Next day found plenty of small 4pts but didn’t find anything worth shooting. On Monday that was a different story. We spotted a few bucks we decided not to take but then found some does in an ideal place for my father in law to get one, or both of his if the opportunity presented. We stalked in and he made a perfect shot on one at 150 yards. While he was taking care of the deer I decided to walk up the ridge and do some glassing for a buck. It didn’t take me long to turn up a few deer, with a 3x3. All of a sudden the 3x3 took off running and I saw a nice 4pt coming toward him. After seeing him I realized he was worth another look. I proceeded to watch him for an hour chasing 2 smaller bucks off and tending a hot doe! Was so cool to watch! I wasn’t sure yet if I wanted to take him so I backed out and hiked back to my father in law and helped him finish up the doe and tell him about the buck. We decided to hike back up and try to find him again and did easily. My father in law said he’d take him if I decided I didn’t want to. Watched him bedded for another half hour before I decided he was good enough for me! We got within 160 yards of him bedded and got him to stand up. He went right back down in his tracks with a perfect shot! Was a great day!

Next few days was more passing up smaller bucks until we found a decent buck right off the road in private property! They were just about 50yds off of public land but not going anywhere! A dozen does and 3 bucks. I said hey why don’t we try to call them into public land? Worth a shot! We got setup on a ride about 300 yards away from the fence line. Hit the fawn distress and immediately the small 2pt cane running! The rest followed in a single file line all jumping the fence! I was literally laughing out loud! It worked! Once the buck got about 50yds onto the public land he layed the smack down on him and he went nowhere! How epic! Got ham back to the truck and went to the spot he harvested his other doe, and got his second. Tagged out in Montana! My buddy and his girlfriend also tagged out on 2 nice bucks the next day. 8 deer total(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181117/c6021107a3276276b367aa6ca749f4a0.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181117/4aebb4d4e40091b34f57cbd96c1c100d.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181117/8208862982661c2a98d0a2fde1017f2a.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181117/b44e5fd78202d1590f617c631e5cae15.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181117/8d0f5ae122410b874b6d8eec5cd754b6.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181117/f3042aa6db5d81f8d8a5fc49adf53f9c.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181117/f769f0f91ea1087134f714e4291f4c80.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181117/b51771ec891753eafb791a5c47dbe423.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181117/e92c88a2df9702184596c77673651fcb.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181117/a4c5e91b952d2e2a6102cf0dba2f9e35.jpg)
