That’s going to take a good taxidermist to fix that cape. That is a phenomenal buck.

Right!  Awesome buck but looks like he steer wrestled him cut his throat.  I’d do whatever it took as well if that was my buck.  Love the darkness of his rack, almost like it’s covered in pine tar.  So cool.

I'm guessing a lot of us old timers grew up cutting the deer's throat.  That was just the way we were taught.  I got a buck in from my neighbor who cut his son's buck's throat even though it had been dead for 15 minutes (according to the son).
In this case of the big rez buck I'm replacing the cape with a big white faced old timer that will do him justice.
Here is a pic (if it works) of another rez buck that green scores 192 and change.

They definitely seem to manage there animals well. I’m assuming they get to hunt threw the rut for the ungulate species as well and that don’t hurt for killing monsters either

There you have it, I,m an "old timer" and thats what I was taught also, point em downhill and slit the throat, heck, back in my "hay day" we killed some monsters and never had one "scored",  never had em mounted and gave the horns away to the Boy Scouts etc. to make projects out of.....Good times

Score doesn't mean sh!t with bucks like that. Mount that buck and put it on the wall next to a 190 typical 4, everyone that walks into the room and looks will gravitate to the massive heavy buck every time......that's from experience.

Congrats to the hunter, that's a true buck of a lifetime!

You might be surprised how many monster bucks are on that Rez.  I know of several mule deer killed throughout the years that were over 40" wide and whitetail bucks pushing 200".  Not sure if it is as much management s it is remoteness, lack of pressure and rugged terrain.

True story, two of the biggest bucks I have ever seen dead or alive were at a gas station in Winthrop in the late 70,s, the heads were under a tarp in the backseat of a Honda, I was filling up and noticed the horns through the window, a couple young girls came out of the station and got into the car, I asked if those were their deer and the driver said "yep" and she pulled the tarp off and 2 -30plus inch bucks were exposed(the heads), if I remember right one was 32" and one was 34" :dunno:. They were sisters and one had just graduated in June, mom and dad had baught the graduate a guided hunt somewhere around the Rez and she took the sister. Heavy and wide bucks, true story!

Here's another rez buck taken this year.

An interesting side note to the Colville's predator control.... WDFW "granted" them a quota of 3 wolves to be killed on the north half.  After the recent removal of wolves from the Profanity/Togo pack WDFW declared their quota was filled.  Needless to say it didn't fly.

First of all, their herd numbers are way down as well, but as testament to papa :yeah:  they look to be responding.  They are aggressive at predator management(hounds).   They have reasonable harvest limits and reporting of harvest.    Real game management.  They brought in elk that thrive in that terrain.  They manage them as a sustainable way to feed their people.   They self regulate, meaning they go after abuse unlike others....  Trying not to be political....   They have the terrain and escapement.   They also manage their forests.   I think they have gotten a little greedy in some places, which has negatively impacted their herds in localized spots, but in reality, they have avoided catastrophic fires, and it doesnt take long for the feed and brush to actually help game.   Their forests are 10x healthier than off rez.  The genetics are there, and the hunting pressure is relatively low.   I suppose thats the short version.  Some shout outs to game management.  They transplanted sheep into country that can sustain them.   They are doing well!   They brought in elk, they are doing beyond well, and now they have brought in Antelope.  Fingers crossed.

Wolves are severely impacting their herds.  I'm looking forward to their response.

Those elk are doing so well that a few monster bulls are wandering off of the Rez into Natl. Forrest land.  Our biggest bucks that we have killed over the years have been wittin a couple of miles of the Rez line.

Just goes to show what is possible with limited harvest.

You'd never even think it possible in most places in this state, but places like this and and even the Kapowsin Tree Farm with respect to elk continue to amaze.

I'd love to see 1/5 of units or so, equally distributed throughout the state, go to a trophy sort of management like this.

Post by: boneaddict on December 01, 2018, 08:57:09 AM
It certainly isnt all WDFWs fault, but yes they could do better with the predators.   By the way, the Rez is Lousy with bear and has been forever, for those of you preaching that.

On the flip.  It helps to have country like that.   90% of the big bucks killed are killed during the rut and 80% of those are popped from the road.  Its tough country and not very many folks doing the harvesting.   That helps tremendously.

Spent the last 50 years or more running around in that country. Don't get me wrong, that is an awesome animal, but not all that unusual for that country. Have seen one very similar and a couple pretty close to it during the 90s in October and early November on what is considered the north half. Even with the deer population being what it is now, those older bucks that can actually get to that 6/7 year old get really smart and really nocturnal. Once a buck gets to that age, he's big enough and tough enough to make predators think twice, that's "if" they actually ever see him.
If things haven't changed over the years, there is one place on the rez for sure where you can find a deer that has had the opportunity to get that old. Don't quote me on the specifics here, but I've heard Whitmore Mountain in the Southern Central portion of the rez is closed to hunting for up to 8 years at a time. Because of this, the bucks in this area could get the chance to be 8, 9, 10 years old. That "Rez buck" based on that mass, has got to be an 8 year old or older deer. Because we're right in the middle of the Mule deer rut, those bucks will roam 10-15 miles and then even if Whitmore is closed, he could end up down along the river, thus not too far of the highway through that area.
If you ever want to photograph or just see big mature Mule deer during the rut, there is a road that goes up the west side of Whitmore Mountain. It's worth the trip just to see what the country is actually capable of producing.

@Boneaddict your last couple posts pretty much summed up a successful management plan that's being operated by the Colvilles.

It would be nice if a similar structure were in place somewhere else for the good of the species for future generations to enjoy.

I dont know where you got your info, but you're absolutely wrong. You should drive up to the Whitmore Mtn area via the road you mentioned and report back how many animals you saw besides wild horses. Also take some pics of the foragable foods you see, because even the sage up there has been trimmed by the horses. Lastly, Whitmore Mtn has always been open to tribal hunting from June/July to the end of Nov/Dec varying on species. Til Dec 31 these days.

Wow, my bad! I heard that story about Whitmore mountain being closed for a few years and then being opened for one or two and then closed again for a few at least 30 plus years ago. Believed it was true back then because I spent most of the late 80s and early 90s running around that area on horseback and fishing the lakes and the river in that area. Two of the biggest bucks I've seen on the hoof were standing on the road above the Columbia river. I've seen some racks hanging in local barn rafters around there that would make your eyes bug out. I was told that most of them were taken from the Whitmore Mt. area. The horses being out there on the loose isn't anything new as far as that goes. I've seen horses up on the north half also that have been let loose and eventually end up just becoming part of the landscape. If there are so many they're destroying the feed for the deer herd in the winter, that's too bad.
My point was, that area can, has and probably still does produce some really big animals. If a buck can find a place to stay out of the hunters eye for a few years, they end up getting really smart and really nocturnal. Once this happens, the only chance at them is during the rut when they just don't care or ya just get lucky.

Agree with that.  My stepdad was a Spokane Indian.  On that rez (at least back in the 80s) tons of whitetails are killed regularly from June through the end of December.  Deer numbers there were not high, but every year my dad (who was one of the few tribal hunters back then who hunted off the roads - he hiked, still hunted and LOTS of tree stands) killed at least one big whitetail.  To be fair, most of those buck were shot in the rut.  But man, for the deer numbers (low densities) there was a surprising number of big bucks.

Pretty common, many areas that consistently produce big deer have generally low densities.

@Boneaddict your last couple posts pretty much summed up a successful management plan that's being operated by the Colvilles.

It would be nice if a similar structure were in place somewhere else for the good of the species for future generations to enjoy.
Can you imagine!!!

I Follow them on facebook and Instagram and have only seen a couple dead wolfs over the last 3 years so it doesnt really seem to me like they're stacking them up like everyone makes it out to be :dunno: I'd like to see some actual numbers is why ive asked, going off of social medias posts isn't what I would consider a reliable source of data.

You can’t assume that the pics posted on social media are the full numbers. They could be going around hound hunting hard and just not saying anything.
