Colville Rez Buck.

Even though I’ll likely never see one on the hoof let alone hunt one it’s comforting to know that remarkable deer like are out there somewhere.

I'm guessing a lot of us old timers grew up cutting the deer's throat.  That was just the way we were taught.  I got a buck in from my neighbor who cut his son's buck's throat even though it had been dead for 15 minutes (according to the son). 
In this case of the big rez buck I'm replacing the cape with a big white faced old timer that will do him justice.

Here's another rez buck taken this year. 

An interesting side note to the Colville's predator control.... WDFW "granted" them a quota of 3 wolves to be killed on the north half.  After the recent removal of wolves from the Profanity/Togo pack WDFW declared their quota was filled.  Needless to say it didn't fly.

First of all, their herd numbers are way down as well, but as testament to papa   they look to be responding.  They are aggressive at predator management(hounds).   They have reasonable harvest limits and reporting of harvest.    Real game management.  They brought in elk that thrive in that terrain.  They manage them as a sustainable way to feed their people.   They self regulate, meaning they go after abuse unlike others....  Trying not to be political....   They have the terrain and escapement.   They also manage their forests.   I think they have gotten a little greedy in some places, which has negatively impacted their herds in localized spots, but in reality, they have avoided catastrophic fires, and it doesnt take long for the feed and brush to actually help game.   Their forests are 10x healthier than off rez.  The genetics are there, and the hunting pressure is relatively low.   I suppose thats the short version.  Some shout outs to game management.  They transplanted sheep into country that can sustain them.   They are doing well!   They brought in elk, they are doing beyond well, and now they have brought in Antelope.  Fingers crossed.

Wolves are severely impacting their herds.  I'm looking forward to their response.

Those elk are doing so well that a few monster bulls are wandering off of the Rez into Natl. Forrest land.  Our biggest bucks that we have killed over the years have been wittin a couple of miles of the Rez line.

Just goes to show what is possible with limited harvest.

You'd never even think it possible in most places in this state, but places like this and and even the Kapowsin Tree Farm with respect to elk continue to amaze.

I'd love to see 1/5 of units or so, equally distributed throughout the state, go to a trophy sort of management like this.

It certainly isnt all WDFWs fault, but yes they could do better with the predators.   By the way, the Rez is Lousy with bear and has been forever, for those of you preaching that. 

On the flip.  It helps to have country like that.   90% of the big bucks killed are killed during the rut and 80% of those are popped from the road.  Its tough country and not very many folks doing the harvesting.   That helps tremendously.
