Title: Youth bow advice wanted
Post by: WSU on December 04, 2018, 11:23:01 AM
I want to get my 2 six year olds bows. I’ve looked at reviews and am shocked at the prices. Any advice on youth bows? They obviously won’t hunt for a while and I don’t plan to start them on archery hunting anyway. Anyone have one they want to get
rid of?

do they shoot now? recurves are fun to play with and can be found pretty inexpensively.

If they're more into wheel bows I would start them on a Mathews Genesis. No monkeying around with draw length and whatnot. Get them shooting and as they grow, the genesis will too. The Genesis doesn't have a draw stop, it's functionally more like a recurve with steady pull. GREAT for learning the archery basics (look up the 12 steps to archery). Then as their skills advance and you want to get them thinking about hunting, a year or two away, pick whichever major brand you like and buy their super adjustable bow. My daughter shot her mini genesis from 4-9, then we got her a Bear Cruzer Lite. She killed her first deer with it this year, the first day she ever hunted (helps to have a good spot... thanks grandpa!  :chuckle: ). She's 11. If you get them in a regular bow now, you'll spend more time adjusting the draw length every week and resighting... Get them shooting and having fun, then move into the hunting gear as they age.

Diamond has a few good ones as does pse and bear.. head over to YouTube and search a ton of reviews.. I’m getting my older kids some bows this year..looking at pse stinger extreme for my daughter and don’t know yet for my son. Took them both separately to the store to pick up a few bows and see which one they liked better in the hand. Then draw that one. If your buying 2 you can buy the same one in different colors to make adjusting simple for you or if they are like my kids need different ones..lol kids

Diamond edge bows are perfect for a beginner of any age. 7-70 pounds of adjustment and adjustable draw length with out a press. And they shoot great! Bought one for my girlfriend to try archery and was really surprised at how easy it was to tune. As a package there around 400$ I think.

My 11-year old son is shooting a Bear Cruzer at ~48 pounds. My 9-year old son is shooting a Diamond Infinite Edge at ~40 pounds. My 8-year old daughter is shooting her brother's hand-me-down Barnett Vortex at ~12 pounds. (She could pull heavier, but the bow's just a tad big for her, and that's as heavy as it'll go when it's set for her draw length.)

The Barnett is cheapest, but it's not nearly as adjustable as the Diamond and it's marginal for hunting - it'll go to 45 pounds, but only at the very end of its draw length. If my daughter shows any interest in hunting as she gets older, I'll upgrade her to the Diamond or something like it.

Took my 5 year old son to Rock Creek last week and they dropped a diamond down to a 19” draw and lightened it all the way up. He no problem shooting it so I’ll be buying one for Christmas this year. It should last him until he’s done growing but you still have to buy arrows every time they grow.

Started my son out on a Alpine that had replaceble limbs to the next size.  It looks like the bow we had has been replaced now with this bow http://alpinearchery.com/2013rookiebow.html

I got my daughter a diamond infinite edge four years ago.
We've been happy with it.
It's very easy to adjust both draw weight and length.

I will throw in another nod for the Diamond Infinite edge, we have 2 in our house,  looks like its called the Infinite Edge pro now, Cabelas has the package on sale for 299 and they also have a PSE mini burner package for 199 which looks like it would fit your needs also.

If you are not needing to get it right now you might wait till after the first of the year and they put alot of them on good sales  :twocents:

I bought my daughter a Diamond Atomic when she was 6. She shot it for 3 years and then grew out of it. I was hesitant about the size of the Infinite Edge at that point. It might have been fine and definitely would have lasted longer. They don't seem to lose much value as I was able to sell it for a reasonable price when she outgrew it.

What do you get if the kid is left-handed? I'm looking at Cabela's and just seeing compound bows, which I'm assuming is right-handed.

Crayons  :chuckle: JK JK

They make them for southpaws, Diamond makes the Infinite edge in left hand

Everyone in my family is left eye dominate. I purchased a Mission Craze for my daughter. They have a lot of adjustability, and set properly I could shoot it and hunt.

Any relative experience for a noob between the Diamond Infinite Edge and the Hoyt Fireshot or reasons not to go with the Hoyt Fireshot as a first bow for my boy?  He'll be seven soon and about average height if not a bit lanky.

https://hoyt.com/compound-bows/fireshot

Quote
18 to 28 inches of draw length adjustment and either 14 to 41 pounds or 19 to 51 pounds of draw weight adjustment

seems pretty well adjustable for a starter bow.

Camo'd Arrow, which I would like to patronize, is a Hoyt shop, but obviously I would like the most appropriate option for him to begin.

Thanks.

I wouldn't go hog wild on a 7 year old, I did that  :chuckle:   They just like to spend time with pop at that age and it doesn't too much matter the quality of their gear.

I'd rather buy lower end bows more often that's suited to their ages, kids get new bow excitement too

I am not so worried about quality or name so much as the experiences available.  I am a complete archery noob, so I don't know if either has a relative benefit over the other, or whether one would have peculiar drawbacks.  I certainly don't want to sell it in a few years because it is not working out.

I just want him to be able to have something that works and he can grow with.  Secondary to that is patronizing a local shop, even though I might be able to save a few dollars by going through Amazon.

Not looking for a gold plated bow, however, and the prices seem roughly comparable.

I'll save the cheap stuff (30+ year old recurves) for me.

My daughter is 7 turning 8 at the end of the month, she's outgrowing her little fiberglass bow.  It's a cheapo but she loves shooting it, she goes out and does it all on her own working on her skills.

it's kinda like this one, ambidextrous and cheap, shoots fiberglass arrows and it'll barely stick the arrows in the target.

Her cousin has a slightly bigger bow (I think it's a Bear brave) but she can't pull it back yet, neither can he though and he's a couple years older.

I'm not sure what her next bow will be, but I'm looking at this one
https://www.amazon.com/Genesis-Original-Bow-RH-Camo/dp/B004T2MOZY?psc=1&SubscriptionId=AKIAJ5D3JAXJBKMXQPHQ&tag=advancedhunter-20&linkCode=xm2&camp=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=B004T2MOZY

I do have a youth bow she can hunt with, several actually but one's a lefty and I'm not sure which is which,  it's either a bear cruzer or diamond infinite edge.  both are good hunting bows for young teens.

Why don't I just start her on the diamond?  because the bow is too heavy overall, she'll struggle to hold the riser outstretched and compensate as her arm sags making bad form.
I want a light weight bow that won't tax her arms too much and keeping good form, building muscle around proper form and posture.

She's no little dainty thing either, she's 90% for height and bigger than most of the boys, actually I think she may be the 2nd biggest in her class and probably the strongest.

:yeah:great advice at least I think so! I started the kids on very similar cheap bows and I think it makes them better shooters. I upgraded to the infinite edge when ready to actually bow hunt and that bow worked great and my son got a few animals with it

Yeah, Amazon has that bow listed at 5 lbs., which seems wrong or pertaining to the entire package.

:dunno:

Interesting zero let off design, though.

The bows that the article listed as good youth bows all seemed to come in at 2-3 lbs.

For reference, the Diamond Infinite Edge and the Hoyt Fireshot both come in at about 3 lbs.

Too heavy

Took my girl bow shopping, the mission craze 2 was a bit heavy, she therw her hips into holding it out throwing off form

The bear cruzer lite was only 3.2 lbs, she held it easily, bit spendy at 400 bux rth

Another person recommended the Mathews Genesis, which now seems to go just by the name Genesis.

There's a lot to like there, including 2 lb. on the mini, low draw weights, near-infinite choice of colors available, and a body of users due to after school archery program use.

Helpful reviews here.

:yeah: as they're learning to shoot, the last thing you want to deal with is weekly tuning sessions! draw length changed, poundage change, sight readjust... get them SHOOTING first! the Genesis is basically recurve with wheels. no letoff. WONDERFUL bow for kids to learn... but I mentioned all that in post #2  :chuckle:

Skip the sights, release, d-loop, blah blah blah, get a Genesis and follow the 11 steps to archery. success in thousands of schools across the country!

Nice.  My boy, 7 at birthday, draws at 18", and the Genesis mini, at 2#, is 4" shorter and 1.5# lighter than the standard Genesis.  He'll probably start at near the 6# starting draw weight.

Red is getting my Damon Howatt 26# recurve set up, too, so I can begin with him.  I am pretty excited.

First session today on the Genesis mini.  Glad we went with the mini as 6# is about right, for starters.  Second arrow, the boy got his first bullseye, and he about burst out of his skin with pride.

We both did about 12-15 arrows, the first for both of us.  We were pretty stoked, but the boy was getting fatigued and sloppy, while it was getty busy in there.

I have nothing but great things to say about Red and Camo'd Arrow.
