Title: 45 Colt... Anyone use it?
Post by: mattaylor81 on March 23, 2009, 05:53:23 AM
I have a 4 5/8" Ruger Blackhawk.  I also have some 255 grain and 300 grain Hardcast bullets with 2400, Unique, and HS-6 for powder.  Anyone have loads that they would recommend that will put me around 1000 - 1100 fps.  Looking to use as a carry gun in the woods.  Possibly a hunting load for deer.  Thanks in advance for any advice.

I highly recomend HS-6. I use it in a 4 5/8 41mag with a 215 lswc to get 1100. Meters real well.

First let me compilment you on your choice of handguns. I shoot unique in mine not sure what velocity I get but it shoots accurately but does not meter well.

I run mine with 18.5 grains of 2400 under a 255 grain Keith cast from wheelweights and 4% tin, dont know what BNH it is...but it does deform on heavy bones...as it blasts through.

Good choice of leadslingers.  I have one as well..with a transplanted steel gripframe and ejector housing. :IBCOOL:

I have a taurus tracker titanium with 6-1/2" barrel, mostly shoot some of my dads cowboy loads for plinking and have some HSM "bear loads" thats what the box says. 300 grain jacketed flat point that pack a real punch!!!
havent gotten too into handloading for it but soon will.

its an UGLY duckling....as a buddy calls it...my beater gun.  I'll find the camera.....

Beater Ruger 45 LC/45 ACP
Stainless gripframe, Super Blackhawk hammer and steel ejector housing. Its pre-battered  so I dont feel bad packing it into NASTY places.

A couple of links from a guy that knows a little bit about the 45 Colt:

http://www.customsixguns.com/writings/heavyweight_bullets.htm

I have 2400 and H110 on hand, but use Unique for 90% of my loads.
The RCBS 45-270-SAA dropping at 285 grains using WW and 9 gr of Unique will put any deer in the freezer.
