Title: Converting my 700ML to a SAFE 209 system
Post by: usmc74 on December 23, 2018, 08:03:25 AM
Just ordered the kit to change the bolt nose and breech plug to a safe enclosed 209 ignition systems.

WooHoo!

Safe meaning no blow back into the bolt or face.

That setup, which I call the 'derfhunter' bolt nose and 209 kit is a really good way to convert your 700ML to a real 209 ignition system.  Back when I have the 700's I built a couple of conversions but this one is far better and well proven!

Derfhunter is a great guy when you get it - if you have any questions just call he can walk you through it with a blind fold on!!!

Serious question; why would you want to convert it to a 209 system?

For the ability to use BH209 powder.  Able to shoot multiple shots without swabbing in between each one.

This kit prevents the serious blowback issue with the open breach

Exactly, Why? I have never had a miss fire on my two 700's. Also it depends on the powder you use for cleaning between shots. I clean mine every 5 shots with no problem and I have never had a blow-back  issue with any of them. Ever!

I too have never had any blow back..however 2 shots and got to clean it. Particularly if shooting over 300 yds.

I have had a hangfire while out hunting (don't remember if it was a #11 or musket cap).  The hangfire DID hit the elk.  The followup shot did flip the elk and it hit the ground.  I have my Knight plunger gun to shoot traditional caps.  I wanted to try the bighorn 209 powder, and the 209 option with the "standard Remington" 209 nipple does produce debris/blowback.  It's my rifle, and my choice to change it.  Still haven't done it yet, too many projects.

Is there something special about BH209 that’s makes you want to do this?

Not having to swab between shots is a big plus.

Not getting the T7 "crud ring".

Like I said, I have a bighorn that I regularly shoot, but being a plunger gun, am unable to use higher charges.

I get the cleaning thing. I’m just wondering if there’s something different about the way bh209 burns or whatever that makes you want to do this. I’m considering trying it in my Encore. That’s mostly why I’m asking.

OK!  My conversion is complete, and I have fired with T7 powder.

Just got some BH209, will see how it holds up to the hype.

Thoughts on the conversion:

The flange of the primer slides into the end of the bolt.  Closing the bolt "swages" the primer into the breech plug.

Opening the bolt extracts the primer, and it just rolls out if you tip it, or it easily lifts out with fingers.

Well, I FINALLY shot my Rem 700ML with my conversion and BH209 powder.

100yards, 2 shots.  1 in X ring, 1 in 10 ring.  Smoke just as bad as T7, but no residue in barrel.

Recoil feels heavier than T7.

I    LIKE   it!

do you have a chronograph?  I would be interested if there is any gains in velocity.  I like the tighter breach, and less opportunity to foul the powder/primer with moisture.  still vulnerable, but not as vulnerable.  I am also just tagging along this thread so I can find it again in a year or two.

Ran the chronograph today. 3 shots with 110gr BH209 averaged about 1750.  2 shots with T7 3F 110 gr was "about" the same.

What was interesting was the BH209 had no issues with the chronograph, but the T7 blew off the sky shields both shots.

For the difference in cost I don't see that I need to continue with BH209.  I will get the lower power Muzzy 209 caps to avoid the crud ring with T7.
