Title: Looking for a Dream Tent...
Post by: actionshooter on January 03, 2019, 09:31:20 PM
Just like everyone else, through the years I have gathered enough gear to outfit a Olympia homeless camp. Everything from a Kifaru Para-tarp to a Cabelas 12x20 Alaknak but I have a hole in the line-up.

Here is what I need or at least what I think I need.

A fairly bombproof dome tent, think Nov in AK, in 50mph winds and rain. It will house 2-3 guys, possibly with cots and has a stove jack for a small wood stove. 6' tall minimum.
Would need to have a useable vestibule and not weigh too much. Say 45# tops. Don't have a real budget, but cheap is good. :)

Am I asking for to much?

Ya---no
Been there done that. I know a lot of people will probably disagree but I will NEVER take tipi to Alaska again. Worst tent experience I have ever had.                                                                                                                                     They have their place and that's not it. They are great until the big storm hits.

Go to Walmart and buy a Barbie tent, set it up sleep in it dreaming she’ll appear in it with you.🤣

Wala dream tent.🤪

Great tents!! I have the 12x24. Use it in Alaska during the summer months. Super waterproof and will stand in serious wind if staked down right. Last summer it stood for two days in 60 mph plus winds. Only downfall is that it holds in the heat really good, good thing for winter months, summertime not so much. Haven't used the smaller ones yet but plan on buying some as I'm sure they are just as great.

Honestly a hilleberg would be a good bet for EXTREME weather although it wouldnt have a stove jack, a good bivy/4 season sleeping bag/bag liner should keep you down to a minimim of zero deg

I used one of the Cabelas tents in AK last year. Lots of room inside one thing I didn't care for was having to bend over to get in and out of the tent. It did well on some of the bad weather situations. Definitely go with a tent with a floor. Spent 2 weeks on Kodiak hunting Brownies in a tipi and didn't really care for it other than packing it in 7 miles it was lighter weight. But if it a drop camp hunt or float then 45 lbs should be about right.

My BIL has this tent, we use it in Idaho. Weighs about 50Lbs. We've had some strong winds and never had an issue. Went through a wind storm a few years ago, and never knew it except for the trees crashing anound us.

Check these tents out. Never  used one and have no second hand knowledge but they look interesting.

If we're talking dream tents, I'm in for the Arctic Oven. Those things are cool!

Just looked these up. They look like a lot of value. You can get the tip and inner tent for under $400 on a 3 man. That's less than half the big boys in that category.

Yeah, the rep who sells em is out of Forks WA and while there is only a one year waranty on workmanship, any tent repair shop will be able to handle fixing/sewing it. That being said, I think im still going to go with a seek cimarron for my next tent mainly because I can pick up the phone and have a human in Colorado actually listen to my issue and be able to do something about it. The Luxe tents are made in China mostly for the chinese domestic market meaning they arent some cheap pile strictly for the export market, however take that with a grain of salt. Despite that fact even the Alaknaks are sewn in China, they just have been branded "Cabelas Outfitter Series" and have a great waranty (at least when I bought it, dont know about now and bass pro). seems the luxe tents have a few distrubutors in Europe, but the guy in Forks is the only guy in the US importing them at the moment so, who knows how long they will be around

But they are atractively priced

https://luxe-hiking-gear.com/collections/lightweight-camping-tents/products/hercules-hot-tent-8p-wood-stove-vent that might fit the bill.....31lbs, "8 person" which means 4 big guys.... Then again I also feel my 12x12 alaknak gets crowded with more than 2, so how many guys you are willing to stuff in a tent is a matter of perception

Arctic Oven meets your requirements.  Trappers live out of those tents in conditions that would make us lower 48 wimps quiver and cry for mama.

Good stuff isn't cheap, they are worth what you pay. My 12x24 goes up and down everyday all summer long and has held up great!

Agreed, but I have so many different styles of hunting, this tent would likely only get used on fly-in and float trips, so only once or twice a year... I just can't justify the price of the Artic Oven even if I know its probably the best option.

Makes sense, hard to justify if you will not be using it a lot.

Let us know what you get.  Some good choices out there.  Wish I had more trips planned to the arctic so I could justify sharing ownership with you!

Hey Shawn!   I am leaning toward the Cabelas Instinct Outfitters tent w/ stove... Trying hard to justify the Artic Oven, not happening.

Looks like a descent tent. What is the trip?

Kodiak, Sitka Deer is the main focus for the new tent, but I have a feeling it would probably replace my smaller wall tent for a lot of hunts.

Artic Oven hands down.

Made in Alaska, by Alaskans. Dual walled, fits cots, can use stoves, etc. NO CONDENSATION INSIDE WHATSOEVER. Amazing tents.
