Title: Idaho salmon unit
Post by: BB11b on January 17, 2019, 08:43:48 AM
So this year we’re going to be doing salmon unit 21 for elk backcountry instead of pioneer zone. I was wondering if anyone had any pictures of this area that they would be willing to share. Just want to get an idea for camouflage and lay of the land. Thanks

If you do a quick search in YouTube, you'll find plenty of pics. Most even move!😃

I'll see if I can scrounge up some pics. Did you buy your tags already? Sold out last week.

If you hunted the back country in the Pioneer zone, then you have camo you need and idea what the terrain is like.

This is pretty much it, and substitute a bunch of burned timber in there. Otherwise, I agree with theleo, if you hunted Pioneer, you saw the same ground.

Hunted 21 last year. Went with a outfitter up the middle fork. A bunch of lies from him to get us to go wit him. I was there 5 day. All we seen were wolfs. Never seen a single deer or elk. Talked to a lot of other people after the fact that either hunted with him or on their own. Nobody got anything. Suggest you do your homework real good

The Middle Fork isn’t even in unit 21...

The middle fork goes from MT into ID and dead ends at unit 21 where the outfitter is

Correction. It’s the West Fork

Gotcha. I was assuming you meant the Salmon River, but obviously that’s not the case. That sucks about your trip though.

I can’t find where that is on my maps. Sucks about your luck though, sounds like how our pioneer hunt was.

We hunted 21 for deer last year and didn’t see a single elk. And not many deer either. Look at the kill stats for the other units in the salmon zone there are much more productive units there than 21. We are going to hunt one of the others for deer and one of the guys picked up a elk tag also.

I hunted 21 this year and covered a lot of ground.  Talked to a guy who saw a couple wolves.  In 5 days i saw one small two point that was about 900 yards away and a few does.  Ended up coming home with a tag.  I am back at ground zero for finding a new spot...

Thanks for all the information I’m really appreciative of it. Also I have the A tag so I’m all archery and in the rut. Thanks again and anymore info would be awesome

Had to correct that for you. I've never seen a 7 day forecast for there that held true that time of year.
