Just an update as we will be heading back to Nevada this Sunday Jan 27 and meeting with Nevada’s Wildlife biologist to do another capture on Jan. 28th and 29th to bring an additional 50 lopes back to our state..so far has been very successful with this 3rd capture taking place though the efforts of the Yakama Nation and Seattle Puget Sound Chapter of SCI and Seattle Sportsman’s Conservation Foundation..
Help support our cost by attending our fundraiser on Feb. 23, 2019 which has been posted on the forum. This has not been a cheap project to accomplish..

Great news, and thanks to SCI again for supporting this effort. It's wonderful to see speed goats in our state now.
If anyone is interested in learning more about SCI, meeting others with similar interests, and attending one of the best fundraisers in the state please consider attending this event:

I seen about 20 the other day was neat to see some in Washington my stepdad was a biologist for region 2 and he said when he started working for the wdfw there were a few left from a transplant in the 60's but he said they didn't do well because of the sheep fences and they don't jump other fences. It got me thinking while out and about there are lots of old dilapidated fences not sure if there was a group that would talk to land owners and possibly remove old fences that are not doing anything just a thought?

Good deal

Glad to see this program continuing.

AWESOME!
I'm really happy to see significant supplemental plants. I'm no biologist, but it sure seems like the best way to actually establish a healthy herd.
-
Love seeing them Is this another release on the Yakama or the Colville.

Great work!

He mentioned Yakama Nation
-
I saw that. Didn’t know if the release on the Colville was independent or in conjunction with the Yakama. It’s really amazing how far the speed goats have traveled from their release points. Kennewick to Glenwood.
-
Yes this project is with the Yakama Nation. 2 years ago we brought back 50 more to supplement the 98 that we previously brought in. Of these 50, we put collars on 30 of them that give us locations 3 times a day so we know where they are. It also informed us of 8 mortalities of the 30 collars. We will eventually catch or discover what has happened to them. Collars have been recovered.
We have also posted a reward of up to $5000 for any that are poached.
Currently most of the lopes have gone back onto the Rez. and have not joined up with existing groups from the first transplant as we had hoped.
We plan to put 30+ collars on the new releases also.
We also will be working with WDFW the second week of Feb. to fly a grid survey of the area and have ground crews on existing groups to make sure they are not missed. This cost is being paid for by WDFW as they actually now have an antelope budget. Thank you Rich Harris.(WDFW)
They however can only survey off the Rez. However Dave has been great to work with also and keeps us informed of what is or on the Rez.
-
Thank you
-
Relocation of an additional 52 antelope has taken place. Monday there were 24 released and Tuesday we released an additional 28. Thanks again to the efforts of the Yakama Nation all of their volunteers they sent down, Seattle Puget Sound Chapter of SCI and Shikars $$$ and volunteers, we have completed what we hope to be a successful effort.
We have planned a survey to take place on and off the rez in approximately two week to attempt to get another count on what we have. The additional collars we put out hopefully help out.
We also owe a great thanks to Nevada Department of Wildlife also on this project as it would not have happened with out them. They have been great to work with and we at SCI have additional plans to help them out on some of their projects.
Hopefully some of you come to our banquet on Feb 23, in Lynnwood to help us raise money for these projects. If nothing else you can watch the protesters show up attempting to get us boycotted. Amazing what those AR's don't realize... what us wildlife organizations can and do accomplish.
-
That's great more food for the wolves and cougars :chuckle:
-
So did they get released on the rez and they will just go where they go?
How does the deal with Nevada work? Is there money that changes hands or do we have to send them some wildlife in exchange?
-
Very cool project you are doing, thank you all for your efforts. Has there been any succesfull reproduction within the original translated herds?

One member on here I think saw a doe with two fawns this year. Can't remember if there was a photo on here or not.

The size of the original herd grew before additional transplants were made.

I haven't seen any in awhile. A few months anyway.....
I see the value of adding new blood for some genetic diversity.....
Love the idea, still hate the process. :-X

As for NDOW there is no exchange of any funds on this project..here at SCI we receive the invoice for the helicopter crews and pay it..as for the collars we order them also and prepay for 3 years worth of data. These collars ping 3 locations per day so there where about are well known when you have that data..they are also designed to drop off in 3 years so we have the ability to reuse them..we do not put collars on antelope that are younger than 2 1/2 years old.
What NDOW does get is a federal grant for all our hours from the time we leave our homes here in Washington until we get back home plus mileage. This is for each volunteer whether from here or Nevada as they to have individuals whom help on this project.
Also the survey date has been changed to Feb. 5-7 of next week. No comment about our Good ole WDFW whom is in charge of this and paying for it.
If anyone is in the area and sees any of the antelope please pm me their where abouts so we can get an accurate count.
I’ll also see if I can figure out how to post some pics from the captures.

That's fantastic that they are doing so well and numbers are growing from there original group. Thanks everyone for the quick answers and fawn pics.

Very cool, thanks for all your hard work and for posting the info

Cool beans. Thanks for the work.
Ive taken a couple short drives in the Horse Heavens west of Kennewick in hope of seeing some antelope but have not as yet though my bro in law who makes deliveries in the area told me he saw some a couple falls ago. I hope the cold weather this week does not hamper your survey.
-
So, I wonder how these antelope have acclimated to our harsh weather we have had the past few days? Wonder what the temperature difference between where they came from and what they are living in now.
-
Goats are crazy tough animals and I bet there is a great chance the weather here is better than where they came from.
-
Pronghorn have a history of big die offs in harsh winters. They'll bunch up against fences and starve. Stand on railroad tracks and get killed. Hope they last awhile.

Given the cold weather gear the folks are wearing at the capture site, the location, and the snow on the ground...Id venture to say it's not too different there than here.
-
The groceries are certainly better here, have to wait and see with crusty deep snow and any blue tongue events.
Thanks for the hard work, not easy getting all of that put together.
-
The weather is definitely milder in WA than eastern Montana and Wyoming, I am more fearful of poachers killing antelope than WA weather.
-
We did some surveys on Wednesday and Thursday with Yakama Nation, WDFW and SCI volunteers weather was miserable at best as there was a plane flying grids in the air over a large area. It almost turned out that the ground crews had better success finding lopes than the plane. Again weather was bad but we did at least find 250+ antelope. We definitely missed some but they are still there and seem fo be finding plenty to eat..it is not far for them to travel to some of the crop circles however they do not seem to use them. They prefer to use CRP or natural areas over any wheat farming or irrigated areas.
-
I have a family member that said he really thinks he saw a antelope east of Moses lake in a field off of -90? Are their antelope in areas off I-90?
-
East of Moses would not be a surprise, they have scattered all over the place. You will find them on the alfalfa pivots when things dry out, pretty easy living right now.
-
I saw one last Friday about 1 mile east of Ritzville. It was standing in some sagebrush not 75 yards from I90. I couldn’t believe my eyes.

I saw 2 or 3 (can't remember now) about the same place back in April.

My girlfriend called me on Friday after seeing two antelope off of I-90 just east of Ritzville.
-
huh, i was headed back to spokane after a weekend in Walla Walla and somewhere along the route through tri cities and ritzville, I saw an animal out in a field that looked the WAY wrong color for a deer. had a very orangish hue to it. My brain said pronghorn, but i didn't know they'd gotten that far east. can't remember exactly where it was :bash:
-
It's really cool that people are getting to see pronghorns here in WA, thanks again to SCI and the tribes!
-
Hope to see them soon, so much good habitat between Moses Lake and Ritzville. They should really do well.
-
Anyone seen any pronghorn in WA lately?
-
Saw some east of Ritzville a month or so, friends saw some up north of Ephrata a couple weeks ago...
-
Raced 1 near Greenaway rd south of Omak Lake last week.
-
Thanks for all of the info and video's, Josh. I remember when this program started and they lost a major portion of the herd, drowning in a drainage or something. It seemed like this wasn't going to be the right place for them. I'm glad to see the program is working and existing animals starting to support it naturally.
-
Just catching up on this but wow, awesome! Pronghorns make me proud to be an American :chuckle:
Thanks to all involved.
-
Just saw two does and a buck just east of Tokyo north of 90. Pretty cool, don’t think I’ve seen them up here before.

Nice, I've seen 3 lopes twice between Ritzville and Tokio the last few months.
-
I saw one in the I-90 ditch just west of spokane this last weekend. Would've loved to see it on the hoof!
-
I seen three just south of Wenatchee. Pretty cool to see and watch. Glad they are doing well.
