Cougar killed in northern Stevens Co. after attacking pet cat
After receiving word of the incident, WDFW solicited the help of a houndsman from Spokane who was able to track and lead WDFW officers to the cougar’s location who then euthanized the animal.

EVANS, Wash. — Wildlife officials euthanized a cougar in Northern Stevens County after it attacked a resident’s pet cat and subsequently charged the resident last weekend.
The incident first happened around 6:30 Sunday morning near the community of Evans, North of Kettle Falls. According to Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife spokeswoman Staci Lehman, a man noticed the cougar attempting to walk off with his pet cat. The resident then tried to scare off the animal. The cougar started to charge the man, but he was able to scare the animal away. Lehman wasn’t able to confirm if the resident’s pet cat survived the attack.

After receiving word of the incident, WDFW solicited the help of a houndsman from Spokane who was able to track and lead WDFW officers to the cougar’s location who then euthanized the animal. Tracking the cougar was relatively easy due to the animal’s tracks being visible in snow nearby, Lehman said.
Lehman described the cougar as a “large tom” that was killed without incident.

While Lehman noted that cougars are known to live in rural areas of Stevens County, a cougar interacting with a resident is rare. “to be that close to a house isn’t common,” Lehman said. Snow in higher elevations likely pushed the cougar and its prey from more common habitats, Lehman said. The cougar likely saw the man’s pet cat as its next meal, Lehmans said, adding “It’s probably easy pickings.”
Jackie Howard, who lives in the small city of Marcus nine miles South of where the attack happened, said she was aware of the animals presence nearby. "Two springs [ago], there were tracks on the property that it had just wandered in and then disappeared. Never heard it, never saw it,” Howard said outside her home off highway 25. Howard added that she and her husband weren’t fearful of the animals and knew that cougars tend to keep to themselves. "Just be vigilant. Don't be foolish going and looking for them,” she said. "When you live out in the country, you're going to have to expect wildlife."

Maybe no one has told the predators they should be scared.

That's a cat for 108 for next year

Couldn't tell you how many times I see Cougar right on hwy 25 and the RR tracks in Evans, WA  :chuckle:         A bunch!

Just north of there is a guy who lets rabbits run free all over, that really drew in the big cats, seen them after them rabbits many times.

Just north of Evans I had one run out in front of me, I bumped it in the butt with my car as it jumped over the guardrail, I slammed on the brakes but still bumped it, it turned around and swiped my left front fender just above the headlight and left claw scratches in my paint, kinda like a monster energy drink logo

Wait a second, Miss Lehman apparently didn't get the talking points memo that backs up WDFW's cougar plan based on "The Wielgus Phenomenon". Her comment "snow pushed the cougar from common habitat" contradicts their narrative. :twocents:

Not much different than the views of the wolf roaming around in the Blue creek area. I'm sure had this cat not been shot the kids catching the school bus would be fine.

I seen them in Evans, WA in the summer months for years   :dunno:

I seen em winter months too, and there currently isn't much snow in the hills above Evans, not enough to push anything down for sure!

but there is wolves up there

108 is covered up in cats and wolves, moose are only a fraction of what they used to be. :bash:

I grew up in Evans, never seen a cat there growing up, my dad still lives there, but since WDFW has nearly stopped cougar hunting, cougars and now wolves too are overpopulated in the mountains, excess cats have moved closer to neighborhoods in order to eat.

Oh get real.  They creep around my house year round.  Had one in the back yard staring at me through the window in may.

Buddy just a week ago had cougar prints across his deck and around the house up by Elk.

Killed 40 feet from my house then drug another 20 yards before eating. My neighbor to the south had a cougar kill 50 yds from their house.  They are close to houses all the time.

Had some help from' Rainshadow' and we went looking for the cat . Actually found fresh tracks up in the cliffs above the Lodge.  When Steve peaked over one of the cliffs , the cat was right below him  Boom!! Missed!! He probably still thinks about that shot. I actually put a treestand up in my back yard and stayed in it that night to see if the cat would come back . I heard chirping about 10:30 in the woods 100 yds up the hill but I did not see them.

So does this cat count towards quota? Is there a quota there?

Snow drove them down my arse.  This is the least amount of snow we’ve had in a decade.

More cats, more wolves, less food equals more encounters.   It’s not rocket science.

"Snow drove them down my arse" :yeah:......This is why they have lost all credibility with most hunters and with folks who spend more time in the woods than they do. I have a friend in the Methow that killed one under his house in August one year and know of another fella that seen one trying to cache a deer kill in one of his hay bails in his field in early October a couple years ago! Most of the cats I,ve seen in the last 10 years(Methow) have been from June-October, heck I saw one 2 years ago in July up Cub Creek and 4 years ago we seen 2 up around Buck Lake in June! Why they continue to make excuses for and coddle these things while our deer and elk herds spiral down the crapper is beyond me. I,m no conspiracy type but is there some sort of agenda or are they just that incompetent?

That unit is already closed, but yes problem cats have historically counted towards the quota for the GMU

This would be in unit 108 and the quota has already been met. The unit was shut down on Jan 1st.

I'm just wondering what this has to do with cougar hunting and why its infecting my feed  :dunno:  coyotes eat pets every day.  Can we start a cougar section so people can post this stuff there and so I can ignore that board along with the wolf board
