UW researcher says wolf population likely larger than estimates
SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - A University of Washington researcher says the number of wolves in the state is likely higher than thought.
Samuel Wasser conducted a two-year wolf study using scat-sniffing dogs.
He says his dogs detected 95 wolves in one area of Stevens and Pend Oreille counties during the 2016-17 season. The state wildlife department a year ago estimated there were a minimum of 122 wolves statewide.
Wasser says it's possible Washington's population of wolves is closer to 200 animals. He presented his findings to a state Senate committee last week.
State wolf managers also spoke to the committee. They said protections, available habitat and a suitable prey base are facilitating a "wave of recovery" among wolves in Washington.
The animals were all but wiped out in the state early in the last century.

Gee, really? Whoda thunk it?

Will not be long and their population will be declining as they have ate just about everything but the turkeys and the two children they are allowed on Braindamagebridge Island.

They need to do some extensive research to find if they are like fish. Once they have almost depleted the food source they become all heads and no bodies. :chuckle:
WDFW Professional Wolf Management team along with the CNW folks should be able to get a huge grant for that waste of Sportsman dollars also.

I can attest that orcas island doesnt have the same kind of population as San Juan. Wolves probably wouldn't last long there. 2c

It doesn't need a population they are protected and nothing can harm them. There is some sort of a food base. :twocents:

I would like to know who is really responsible for reintroducing the wolf. Yes reintroducing. When you see a helicopter on top of a ridge letting a big dog out of a cage I would call it reintroducing. I don't think it's the WDFW but they are being told what to do. Why would they hurt so many people in so many ways? It's kinda Sick I think. This state is amazing at the Stupidity it shows. Embarrassing to say the least! Why can't something be done?

Got a video of that? I find it amazing that with all the reports of wolves being released in WA, I've yet to see a single photo or video. I'm no fan of wolves, as anyone on here can attest. And I also think that laws were broken to facilitate the wolf reintroduction. But the stories of black helicopters and black SUVs releasing wolves without any photo evidence to back it up makes all of us look like stupid, tinfoil hat people. If you stick to what we have evidence for, there's plenty of stuff to use against the principals of this program. Start going off the edge with reports of things for which you have no evidence and all of the other valid stuff you have to say isn't listened to.

hope they don't get paid for such highly educated research.
