Finally got a chance to shoot from my 1800 yard spot. Took the 338/375 ruger out with 3rd round hit on moa size rock (triangle shape). Wind was light and 2 moa of wind got me centered with 62 min elevation. First shot goes left and high. 2rd goes center but high 1 moa in the tiny snow patch. 3rd hits on right edge of triangle rock

Looks like a good time. Cannot wait for the last few parts to show up for my rifle so I can have some fun to.
-
You guys are crazy. My wrist would be sore after going up 248 clicks.
-
62 min of elevation! You need a bigger gun man. When you burn out that 338 barrel I need to get you set up with something bigger. :chuckle:
By the way, I think you need to come up with a good name for you 338/375 Long. Every good wildcat needs a name.

been calling it 338/375xl

how many grains of powder with each trigger pull?

how many grains of powder with each trigger pull?
83.5 gr h1000 at 20°F it’s shooting a 250gr Berger at 3015fps

How’s that 375 bme coming along? Last time you got over 3k wasn’t it?
Idk if I’m ready for the cost of .375 as much as I like to shoot
I would like to go with a bigger 338. But by then I may be over it and want the .416 :dunno:

It’s back up and running and I forgot how much I love that gun! 3050 fps is “cruising” speed with the 350 SMK in a 30” barrel and the 300s are at 3145 fps right now. One of these days, Biggerhammer will finish his 375 BME and I’ll get my reamers back. :chuckle:
Of course, I’ve got a 338/408 improved reamer sitting here too. I might even have a cheytac stock/action that I’d part with..... :stirthepot:

One thing I’m learning with this is having the camera Recording has been Essential. With out seeing where you hit it’s a waste of time. Having a spotter that can communicate well would be a an advantage. Having both would be better. Shooting solo I have to take the shot. Then try and spot threw the scope. If I don’t see the hit I have to review the video and then decide if conditions have changed before I take the next shot. By the time I’m ready to shoot again it’s almost like another cold bore as the conditions change. Quite often it’s several minutes between shots. Hoping to shoot at 2000y next outing.
I think it’s time to get a GoPro
-
The GoPro is a HUGE help! At the ranges you're shooting you'll be able to take the shot, then watch the impact on your phone. I'd rather go out alone with my GoPro and spotter than I would with an actual person to spot for me!

I got one but no zoom ??? What am I doing wrong ? Spotter and iphone works ok at 1000 but gopro would be easier if I can figure out how to see soccerball sized rocks with it.

Put it on your spotter like the cel phone?
-
I did put on spotter but must of done something wrong. Was in a rush to beat the morning wind, going to try again this afternoon.
-
I just run my phone scope on my spotter. You can zoom your phone in for additional magnification.

I mount it on the spotter with a phone scope adapter.

It can take a little work to get it dialed in and focused sometimes but it's worth the trouble.

Maybe there’s a trick to it. I haven’t ever done it and don’t have a go pro but wanted to state the obvious anyways. :chuckle:

Oh I read that and had to stop and think did I ? Ha. I'm sure its a simple app tweak or something but I know my gopro doesn't have zoom but some app probably does.

would love to get out with ya!

id be happy to shoot with you. Probably won’t shoot this spot till after big game seasons end
-
Looking forward to the ELR season this year. If Mother Nature would just figure out if it’s spring or winter that’d be great.
Got a bunch of new spots scouted out. 1.4 miles, 1.65 miles and 1.8 miles. 37XC is ready to go and I’m just looking out the window cussing 🤬
-
My good spots are all snowed in until June. The snow this weekend probably bumped it back an extra week or two. :bash:
-
I was so hoping for early access. One of my spots probably has almost no snow but is probably thin frozen layer over deep mud. Barely made it out of there last spring. Rolled in early morning on ice, left in 4 low.

Nice thing about central wa. We've been able to play for the last month and 1/2 here. And only a few minutes out of town!
-
It was nice just long enough for me to finish load work and get excited to head west to my early spot and boom... winter wonderland again :bash:
-
Found a nice spot today. Lil windy but can drive to both target and bench at 960 yards. 338-378 was dialed in - lower left on target. Was load developing Lapua with HBN. Holey cripes! Added 2 grains to get speed back up and looks like I need one or two more. That stuff is slick.
-
Able to drive to the target is awesome! Good shooting too.
Am I understanding you correct, it takes more powder to get the same speed? W/hbn
-
Yes the friction is reduced so pressure and speed drops - acts like barrel just got bigger except no blowby.
Getting up in round count so decided to play with barrel a bit. Once I find max will see if it makes a difference. They say it makes first shot more consistent, less cleaning, lower sd, perhaps greater speed. Will find out. Certainly lowers pressure.
-
Interesting. Please report back how it goes

HBN? And what is this slickery witchcraft, you speak of?
-
Hex Boron Nitride, it's a micro coating in which some people tumble bullets. The coating supposedly decreases copper fouling among other things.

Its like a fine white graphite. Tumble bullets with a 1/4 tsp and some steel shot and it plates them with a slick coating. Run two patches thru barrel soaked in it to pretreat ( one cup 99% alcohol to 1.5 tsp hbn)
It does dramatically reduce friction. Some love it some not worth it. I’m in testing stage ( something new to fight the blues) Costs $30 for lifetime supply.

I'm curious to see your results. Are you chrono checking your loads?
-
Yep using LabRadar. Was shooting 101.4 grains uncoated bullets at 2850. Coating dropped speed by over 100 fps. My first test was 100 gr to 103.3 gr but it only reached 2835 fps. Shooting at 960 yds the hits confirmed speed drops. Testing more tomorrow up to 105 if possible ( quickload suggestion)

Practicing Social Distancing this morning at 965 Yards.
Cold Bore shot - only got one try with Uncles 338-378.
Tried more of the HBN rounds today in 338 Lapua. Interesting, saw some very low es. But have to add a ton more powder to get speed back up and can't get the increase in velocity I was hoping for.
Has potential at slower speeds but too much recoil at 2850+. Scrapping HBN project on this rifle.
-
Nice shooting. Too bad about the hbn. I was hoping to hear it was the cats meow
-
Got a Hornady FS die for 338-378 on Amazon sale for $17. Neck was way small so used a hone to enlarge about 15 thou to 3.64. Bumped shoulders back , and got less than .002 runout. Shot today with less than 2” verticle at 966. Finally solved FS challenge with those bottlenecks.
Regarding hbn test on Lapua. Cleaned barrel now won’t get speed back up. Wth?? Maybe time for that Proof barrel.
-
How many rounds down the tube?
-
About 1000. Shoots fair still - hard to tell nodes with speed variation but less than 3" group at 300. All have been pushed pretty hard - Lapua brass 65k.
This pic just off the neck is strange. Carbon Ring ? Tried power scrubbing, maybe need to try more. Wouldn't think it would cause speed drop though.
-
Sounds to me like it’s about time for a new tube.
-
I used to have a Wby MkV Accumark 338-378 and if I kept the loads somewhat mild-ish, it would shoot fairly decent, but no matter which powder or bullet I tried, as soon as I started to stand on the gas a little bit the goups would open up and the harder I tried to push it the worse they got.
I don't know what your 338-378 has on it for a barrel, but mine was just a standard factory gun and IMO the barrels they put on these big boys is way to small. If I would have kept mine, it would have been rebarreled with either a 9 or 10 twist Hart or Krieger in a Sendero contour. If I recall, the factory barrel on the Accumarks is only a #3 contour and it's fluted on top of them. I think the standard MkV even uses a smaller contour.

Lapua brass for a 338-378 ???
-
Sorry - I’m shooting two rifles per outing. One is factory bedded 338-378 that is shooting great - 3” verticles, 10” groups at 966 yards. Can’t expect much more.
The other is custom 338 Lapua with Carbon barrel that has recently gone to junk. Think Jasnt’s right - time for new barrel.
-
Maybe time for 33xc. For $40 you could rent the reamer from sss. 300gr at 3150
-
Trying to stay under 10.5 # and still shoot 20 rounds comfortably. That 33xc performance is impressive.
-
Hunting gun?
-
Yep. One season in the Blues a few years ago I realized some opportunities can only be reached with a LR setup. Has worked out well.
