Title: Just Bought my Spring Bear Point
Post by: bobcat on February 28, 2019, 11:22:04 AM
Just spent $125.60 for a spring bear point. Was it worth it? I don't know. Ten points now, should have enough in another five years or so, don't ya think? Then they'll probably just go to a general spring bear season statewide by that time and my points will be worthless. And no, it really wasn't $125.60 for the point, but I was forced into buying the full package deal with small game license because if I didn't pay for it all now it would cost more later. The point was actually only $7.10. Oh well, gotta keep the WDFW funded, right?

Why not apply? Ten points should get you nearly any tag you'd like I'd think.... worried about access with snow? Just curious.

I feel your pain. I believe I blew $192. DEBC+SM+Moose sheep and goat+SB...

The good thing is this year WDFW took away kids collecting points so Im saving $100 not being allowed to put my daughters in for OILS

Don't want to use the vacation on a bear hunt this year. Would rather use my vacation in another state. But I'm thinking when I'm retired I'll have time for a bear hunt.

Mine only cost $31.60.👍

What type of bear are you hunting the golden toed species.🤣

My bear license is special. It also includes deer, elk, cougar, and small game. I was thinking about not giving WDFW any money this year, but again, I just couldn't resist. The predator hunting opportunities here are amazing!

I'm confused.  You were going to get deer and elk anyways but did it all at once so its wdfw screwing you somehow :dunno:  and it's your fault and yours alone for having so many points.  If you dont wanna draw that's fine but dont complain about having so many points if all you are doing is points option  :dunno:

Hey Karl, yeah you are confused but maybe I wasn't clear. My post wasn't a complaint. Just commenting that they got $125 out of me when I'm not even sure I'm going to hunt deer and elk in Washington this year. I've been considering only hunting predators, and in looking at the prices, it would be aout $50 for a bear and cougar tag, then add in the small game for $40 so I can shoot a bobcat if I'm lucky enough to call one in. That put me at $90 just to be able to hunt coyote, bobcat, cougar, and bear. For $117.50 I can get the big game combination plus small game. So for about $30 more I can get my deer and elk tags. Figured for that I might as well get them even though at this point I'm not sure if I even want to hunt deer or elk. Too bad they don't offer a predator package for about $50. I'd buy that and do my big game hunting in other states.

Don't forget your discover pass.   :chuckle:

Yeah, I can wait on the Discover pass as the one I have now is good for a couple more months. I'll probably buy it at the same time that I buy all my special permit applications. I'll also need to decide on modern or muzzleloader for the deer and elk tags at that time, and have those mailed along with everything else.

Looking at the points to draw last year, it looks like 10 points this year would certainly not be a guaranteed draw.

No such thing as a guaranteed draw in wa.

10 does seem like it’s on the high side for bear points tho and would definitely help the chances.

Better than a 0% shot with points! On the other hand if you stay with points then I have better odds  :IBCOOL:

I'm taking the opposite strategy. I don't have much time if any to chase bears this spring so I put in for the tag knowing I will inevitably draw.

July 1 at the earliest. They still have to be approved by the legislature.

hell if all it costs me for an excuse to get away from all the b.s. of work and the concrete jungle for a year is $130 i'm all in.  I can put away $12 per month for a year and not think twice about it.  if finances are that bad then cancel your interweb subscription and do something productive with your free time rather than bitch about it.  Hate to break the bad news to you but the price of licenses are going to keep going up...you heard it here first

Brew, makes sense but here's the thing- I thought about just spending $24 on a bear tag. I can hunt year around with just that. Coyotes, grouse, and bears. If I want meat I go to Wyoming.

Oh, almost forgot to mention- with my daughter hunting I barely have time to hunt deer or elk myself. That's another reason I considered not even buying tags. But I was nice to the WDFW and donated my money anyway.

I to just did the point option for spring bear.  Having a lot of things going on right now and did not want to draw and then not be able to hunt.  Though one of my favorite hunts is a spring bear just after the snow has gone.  Glassing the onion patches in the warm spring sun is the best there is...

I heard this fall that they are going to start charging for test also.

So to hunt basically anywhere in ne wa youll have to pay more.  Screw that, i wont do it.  I already pay for bear license and spring app every year.  I will not pay to take an online test every year for the privledge of using a license i already payed for.

Better get in now, next year the test will be a draw.

On another note, Montana is thinking about giving bear tags away for free with deer and elk licenses.

It's only the moose, sheep, and mountain goat that you can no longer apply for unless you're legally able to purchase the tag and hunt, if drawn. That's all that changed. Meaning a person has to pass a hunter education course and therefore be eligible to hunt before applying for those tags.

Thanks! My son, 11, is good to go then. He passed hunters ed, and killed pheasant last year. I put him in for all three of those this year. Hopefully he’ll be able to after those species when he’s 25 lol!! Unless I can convince my wife a move to Alaska is in our best interest.

I put myself and boys in.  Both boys have 6 points each and I am back to 1 after drawing last season.
I purchased the Elk, Deer, Bear and Cougar for each of us along with the spring bear app.  Was in it for $270 so far.  Will buy all the special apps next month along with fishing licenses.  Should be into everything for just under $1k.

Sometimes I feel like it would be a good deal to pay em $125 just to ban me from hunting this state every year, then I’d be forced to spend more time elsewhere.

I'll be hunting here in Washington for sure, it's just that my priority will be taking my daughter hunting. I probably could have skipped buying the license/tags for myself, and only bought my daughter her stuff. Only reason I decided to go ahead and buy everything for myself, was those darn points I have. They really get us sucked in with the points, don't they? But no, I'll still get out and hunt by myself some too, just cause I have a tag in my pocket. Like last year, had a modern elk tag and my brother and I hunted opening morning for an hour or so. Can't really even say we hunted, just went for a walk in a place we hadn't scouted, but that's okay we just wanted to get out in the woods in a place that wasn't overrun with other hunters. Then I went alone the following Friday, got a good hike in and did see a cow and calf, so that was a successful hunt in my mind.
