Title: The hunt-wa junk food thread
Post by: Naches Sportsman on March 02, 2019, 03:30:27 PM
I'd figure I'd start a fun thread since everyone is dreaming about hunting season and the next time they will allow themselves to eat junk food due to diets (at least I am :chuckle:)

What's your go to beverage of choice (besides alcohol) and junk food while hunting?

I really like bang energy drinks and sour patch kids. I sometimes throw some cheez-its and oreos in there.

No wonder I gain weight rapidly in the fall :chuckle:

@coop2424 and I had a little hobo elk camp one year. On the way to spending 3 nights in the elk woods, I grabbed 3 bags of chips and 3 pints of salsa. The Korean clerk said, "it look like you live on chip..." All three nights I leaned against a fuel can and ate a whole bag of chips and a pint of salsa until my mouth was raw. Living the dream.

@Karl_ Blanchard has seen me literally pack doritos into the backcountry. Not exactly a space saver but darn are they good.

@BULLBLASTER has seen me eat a mountain house sweet and sour pork for a snack.

I'm a purebred junk foodie

I like sugar free red bulls, swedish fish and donettes. Plus of course doritos to make sure I stay up on my salt levels.

Drinkwise if its not water its  bourbon, in camp only. Foodwise theres always a good stash of sour patch kids, snickers bars, nutter butters, and Tim's cascade sweet Maui onion chips on board.

The best thing about keeping them in your pack is the sour patch kids and snickers bars are dang near frozen all the time, the premium consistency for those two.

You guys are consuming this stuff while hunting? I want to puke just thinking about hiking up a hill with this stuff sloshing around in my stomach. If I'm driving home from a trip I will indulge in some gas station snacks like combos or munchies. Got to be something crunchy and salty.

If we are talking about around the house junk food well I have been on a ding dong tear lately.  If around elk camp I usually bring a bag of salt and vinegar potato chips, and package of cookies.  Usually lasts 4-5 days of a 7 day hunt.  I do like the cherry pop tart idea somebody mentioned.

When I was going modern for elk, it was shortly after Halloween; so there were buckets of candy.  For the other seasons it is usually some kind of chocolate bar or cookie, maybe trail mix.

Gummy bears and donuts(mainly crullers). I basically eat one or the other everyday right after a workout to replenish the muscle glycogen which aids recovery. So sometimes it’s ok to eat “junk” food!

I forgot about the box of Girl Scout cookies I ate yesterday too, there's another 1000 calories.

If I'm lucky, there will be a box or two hidden in the freezer come hunting season, and those go directly into the pack.

A box of those glazed old fashioned donuts. After a couple of days they get hard enough to use for breaking your truck window out if you lock your keys in the truck.

Those donuts are a go to while driving out to camp early in the morning.
Before the season starts buy several packs of pop tarts, and a Costco size bag of peperoni sticks and Fruit snacks for the pack. Usually carry a few candy bars in the pack as well but they seem to last 1-2 weeks unless I have to pack something out.

Little bone I'll throw you guys.

Jalapeno cheddar dip

Equal parts mayo and sour cream.  Add an incredible amount of shredded cheddar cheese, minced olives and pickled jalapenos.  Mix well.  If it lasts more than a day the jalapeno flavor gets stronger.  Tortilla chips are a good option but pretty much any chip or cracker is a good serving spoon.  Throw it on a hotdog for some added hacha!

White Monster Zero Ultra and Hot and Spicy Cheez It Grooves. Usually also pack around a tin of smoked oysters or sardines.

This thread really has me craving powdered donuts for some reason and I don't think I've eaten those in 20 years.

I just can't get on the energy drink bandwagon. Give me the worst stomach ache on the planet and make me feel on edge, like I'm doing something illegal.
