For a hunting caliber the 6.5-284 is high on the list but I'm a big fan of 30 cal holes so 300wsm is at the very tip top. 185 berger vld at 3100 is a wicked killer

I don’t think of the 6.5-284 as a short action cartridge. But that’s ok
Sure it is, or maybe I should say it can be. You can do a 6.5-284 on a long or short action, they tend to shoot a little faster in a long action, if they are throated properly, because it frees up a little case capacity, but there isn't really a great deal of difference, in velocity, between one built on a SA versus LA, and even less when you use an extended mag box in the SA.
I say all that and my 6.5-284 is built on a Rem 700 LA. :rolleyes:

yep, mostly love them because of the rifles they're chambered in. The 99 is the nicest lever action in existence in my opinion. Anyone who has never carried one is missing out! They carry more like a 20 gauge shotgun than a typical rifle. My 250 is a mid 70s straight stocked 99a that will put 100gr nosler ballistic tips in an inch at 100yd, clocking 2900fps. My 300 is a 99f made in 1960, i picked it up recently and will likely take the 250's place as my all around westside rifle, once i work up a good load for it. Just has a little more thump with a 150gr or 165gr slug, for when elk or bear might be the hr target.
