I'm anxious to see how the gun works for you. A 10mm 1911 is a great combo and there are so many options right now that it's hard to pick one. I got rid of all my 10mm's but I've really been looking hard at getting another one. I'm thinking more along the lines of the GP100 though so I can ream it out to 10mm Mag.

10mm isn't a trendy round. They may seem popular on hunting forums but you will rarely see one at a range. My local gun dealer pretty much only sells 9mm.
I wish it was trendy actually, would probably have better ammo options at stores. The stores mostly carry that blue box brand which is loaded pretty tame.

So what ammo do I want to shoot out of this ? The guy I bought from reloaded and used 180 gr Hornady XTP over 9 gr of Longshot powder and was around 1350fps. Everything I found says Underwood ammo ?
I have a Sig 1911 10mm and I haven't really shot it a lot, but whenever I have, I've always shot the Sig Elite 180gr FMJ ammo and that stuff shoots well in my gun and seems to be pretty stout, not what I'd consider reduced load ammo. Probably wouldn't be the best choice for hunting ammo, but if you are looking for practice ammo, I'd recommend it.

my carry ammo is 220gr coated hard cast from underwood, I also shoot some of it to make sure the gun runs good on it. I found a 22# recoil spring to be optimal and I can go from double tap to 220gr hardcast without issue. The double tap empties land pretty close to my feet but runs fine, the 220gr hard cast lands further away but isn't going so far that I need a new spring 6-8 feet away and the slide isn't slamming the rear hard creating more muzzle flip.
I had a 20lb spring, too light. 24lb spring was too heavy for the double tap and almost too heavy for the 220gr also.

Has anyone tried the XDm? Thinking real hard about this one, or the SR1911. The common XDMs (9 & 40) have a great track record for reliability, but a lot of 1911s do have issues.
I’ve owned the G20 & G29, and I’m not a fan. Liked the EAA Witness the best, but it was too heavy.
I ran an XDm 40 and liked it, didn't buy one but I liked it enough I would if I needed another 40

and upgrade the guide rod to a captive stainless steel guide rod. You could also go non-captive, but I prefer captive so the spring can't launch itself across the room. I'll deal with the small allen key head. Now that I have the correct weight spring I won't take the spring off the guide rod hardly ever.

there is some discussion on barrel support for the brass and the OEM not having enough support on super hot loads like the UW200 and UW220 hard cast, but it depends on the year your barrel was made there may or may not be any gains in support or accuracy with aftermarket. I'll take apart my G20 and take a pic of the LW vs OEM barrel, the LWD barrel I bought see if the difference can be seen. I haven't seen any smiles on my brass after shooting it. After doing some reading it appears LWD barrels have changed so you couldn't get one like I have anymore anyways. Not sure why LWD changed their barrels :dunno:
After shooting the heavy stuff take a good look at your brass and see if there's smile dimples on the back end indicating you could use more support.

Unless you plan to reload maybe try running the stock barrel and look for rounded dimples on the end of the ejected brass.
Glock supposedly made changes to the barrels so it depends on the year of the gun, I dunno :dunno:

I would also get some softer recoiling JHPs if you plan on doing any urban carry. Gets you back on target faster and fewer concerns with over-penetration.Not going to conceal carry a 6" 1911 :chuckle:. That's what my 4" and Shield is for . The 10 is strictly range toy and hunting.
The softer stuff is also a lot easier to shoot one handed. Hot 10mm is good for bear protection but I wouldn't carry it in a crowded area.

I prefer the lowride + leg strap, so there's no flopping around on a sweaty leg with the strap belt loop it came with.
The biggest negative is it grabs brush and is loud in the brush as you walk along. I was going to fabric coat it to soften it up, but it'll still grab everything.
and now I'm rocking a Kenai Chest Holster which I haven't actually used or practiced with yet, but I'll start up soon running drills out of the chest holster.
I need to make it work with a bino pouch and backpack; so we'll see where I land with that.

I have the Kenai gunfighter for my G20
I do like it for woods carry
With a bino pouch handgun in chest holster and backpack on too much in front IMO
I use my binos with just the strap crossed over one shoulder and binos under my arm towards my back with my daypack on
Works for me

I have an army surplus M12 holster that works pretty well as a modular setup, with Bianchi add on such as chest holster, Safariland molle adapter, Bianchi drop leg extender, etc.
Simply Rugged makes a chest harness and adapter that can adapt a belt holster, theirs or others to their chest holster, and they make fine holsters in their own right.
Just some options to think about.
