Howdeee everyone. Even though we got 4+ new inches of snow last night I am starting my planning for this year's bear baiting. Two years ago I had 3000 pounds of bear bait hauled in from Wisconsin from a business called Bob's Bear Bait. It is pallets of outdated candy, frosting, gummi bears, nuts, ice cream sandwiches, cookies, you name it. The bears just hammered my baits. It cost me right at $1000 for the bait and to have it shipped here. The bait itself is not too expensive, the shipping is a killer. So I wanted to see if anyone in Northern Idaho or WA wanted to look at going in on a shipment. My 3000 pounds was enough to supply three baits and they were hit pretty hard on a regular basis. I think the bait costs me around $550 and the shipping was around $450. I believe we can really cut down on the shipping costs if we consolidate a big order. It has to be delivered to a business with a forklift, but then we could all meet up and divey the loads up. Last year I did not do an order and used all local baits and my action was tepid at best. Still took two bears off the baits, but way less action than the year before. Could be all of the bears from the year before have died from diabetes, or they were just not that excited without the 5 gallon pail of German Choc frosting. :) If anyone is interested check out the site, see what you might want, let me know and I can contact Bob and see what a combined order might run and then we can decide if it is feasible for each of us to do it.

It’s a good site with good stuff. Got a few small things last year. I would take you up on it, but don’t think I’m baiting this year. Good luck

I don't live in Idaho so I know I'm not .
But I had a question when you say local baits, like what did you use.
That peanut butter and sweet granola could be used for deer bait.
-
I think I’d be in Fred.
I’m not picky on what it is so whatever you are getting anyways would be fine for me. Plus you’ve already proven that it works. :chuckle:

Bread, pastries, dog food, scraps etc...

I'm probably going to go with just a pallet or two of frosting to supplement other baits. They LOVE frosting!! :)

This is just a suggestion with a grain of salt.
But way back when Washington allowed bear baiting we would drop off barrels at restaurant and get grease in the off season. You could dump it on anything or everything.Even on the ground and bears would eat dirt.Even five gallon buckets at your local cafe can go a long way.I was going through taco bell drive through other day a seen there barrel sitting next to dumpster and told my wife could you imagine the bears that would come in.Maybe I had strange childhood. :dunno: :dunno: :chuckle:
-
Yes we use plenty of grease. ;)
-
So much good stuff on there! Apple cobbler pouchesv strawberry filling! Loads of cereal mrshmellows!
-
Yep, if it weren't for the shipping!!!!! I'd have a couple of tons of bait from there!!

Okay, hold the phone, you can buy a 55 gallon drum of Lucky Charms marshmallows for $65 :EAT: :rockin:

:yeah: I'm thinking about applying for a grant and starting a mail order trail mix business. Now doubt it would work in 'green' states. :chuckle:
-
I always wanted the drum of peanut butter. Paint up like a jiffy jar and set it in kitchen as a conversational piece

You better hope I don't find your bait station.
I could gorge on that stuff for a week before popping.
-
Nothing better than getting hooked up with a big bakery/Franz guy for all the outdated pasteries.

I used to get out of date Cyrus O Learys pies to use for bait. There would be 20+ pies in 3 or five gallon buckets, never had better bait. Their waste is sold on contract now and unavailable. :'( Sometimes it was hard to pass up a few bites when you dumped fifty chocolate creme, or banana creme pies on the pile.

I’m more interested in the 20 lbs of sour patch kids for $6.88. I’ve eaten some stale sour patch kids and they aren’t that bad

I can't wait to see the game cam photos with dudes rummaging through the pile.

FYI michias, there’s a guy down here that brings in bear bait buy the semi load and sells it at cost, he guided up out of Riggins. Frosting, gummies all that stuff. Not real close to you but closer than the mid west. You call him up he’ll ask you how many tons you want. I just picked up my first load from him Friday. Got my tree stand up today. Getting close

No offense, but think its crazy to pay so much for 3 baits? As some have said, use local outlets. Before the ban here, I would run 20-30 baits, all funded by local restaurants, bakeries, and grocers. All free, all sights stocked daily, all with multiple bears. Would always start the sites with woodchuck, beaver, etc...

No offense taken. 2 years ago I ran 3 baits with the bait I got from Bob's Bear Bait. Cost me a $1000. Last year I ran nothing but local baits. Had plenty of bait and total cost was around $125. 2 years ago I passed on a couple of bears and did not take a bear, but could have. Last year I did not see a bear, but two nice bears were taken off the the baits. But the difference was VERY noticeable in the activity level from the year before. I had multiple bears on baits in an area where several other baits were located in the same general area. Last year same areas, you could tell the bear activity was way down, probably because I was using the same baits as all the other folks were using. I think you are 100% right if you are hunting an area that few other guys and gals are baiting. But I think it might be worth it in an area with increased competition. I'm thinking of combining the two, local baits with some pallets of frosting. I think that will give me an edge...maybe not, but it will be fun to see. Also even though your bait was free or not too expensive, you do have to add in all the time and gas money going around collecting the bait as opposed to picking it up all at once. Just a thought.

I would add the free bait in north Idaho is becoming a lot more challenging and time consuming. It wasn’t very long ago I could drive to franz bakery and fill my truck up now with all the new people here they have a list you can hardly get on it’s not worth the hassle I have a new source for bakery and bread but it’s a bit of a drive. I have always been a free bait guy but agree with Fred I think in the new Idaho probably a combination of free sources and purchase of bulk probably the best way to go.
That’s if you add up the cost of your time when it comes to collecting “free “ bait. Second again with Idaho being the fastest growing state in the nation you are probably competing with a lot of other hunters baits too so you do need some secret sauce to keep bears camped on your bait. This year will be the first i am buying some bait in bulk but will be at least 70 percent free local stuff probably

Gathering "free" bait isn't like it used to be. Grocery stores have policies that don't allow them to give away wastage, or it is sold to hog farmers on contract. As mentioned above there is a long line of people wanting bread and pastries from the bakeries. Couple years ago it was near impossible to get grease because of eco diesel contract sales, fortunately that has all but gone away so grease is available again.
Bottom line is my time is money, and I would much rather spend it hunting than running around town trying to get bait. Me and a couple partners kick in a couple hundred bucks and we're hunting with better bait than Joe down the road.
-
Free bait is nice, But it always amazes me how time consuming it is.

Sorry guys, guess its been too many years here in washington since we could bait. Back in the 70's-80's, owning my own scratch bakery, with restraints both sides, and my wife running produce section at the local grocer, along with in-laws running large fruit orchards, bait was always in abundance, but those days are gone sadly..

Just a heads up. I run a large scale commercial pizza bakery in Spokane. We have a pig farmer that picks up our scrap/waste/culls, but more as a favor as they do not absolutely need it and some of the time they say it ends up in the compost pile. I have a buddy that used us for bear bait last year and they said it was the best bait they have used yet. Generally on any given pick up I can stack the back of your truck as high as you're comfortable with. If you have any interest, PM me and we can touch base. Good luck y'all!

Ready for the opener. Shops getting a little crowded but still stock piling. Truck load of bread from the bakery today had a bunch of sweets in it. Hoping to knock one down earl this year
-
I won’t be baiting this year.
Any bears out yet?
-
Can’t get baits out yet. Buddy of mine glassed up a cinnamon bear last weekend up above the middle fork but I’m not holding my breath for much action before May. Might get lucky and have some early ones up where I’m at but there’s a lot of snow on the ridges yet so I’m guessing movement will be slow for a while

Yep

Yes, i saw one two days ago eating grass in a creek bed. Beautiful bear, watched him for about 15 minutes from 30 yards away. Western washington

“Bear Hunting Podcast” had a talk on commercial scent.
I got the itch to go bait a stand, but won’t probably. Good luck all
-
I went up to one of my spots this weekend and was still driving through snow in certain spots on the road. I'm not going to be in a rush to get my baits out...I'm not....I mean it, I'm really not....dang I want to get a barrel full of bait out. :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
We used to use Ten Dead Horses. It came packaged in a cans packed in another can. Until mixed it was relatively harmless. After it was mixed... not so much.

ill let you know when they start hitting mine. probably be the week im out of town but im just going to bait super heavy and check after im back. easy to be patient when your 3000 miles a way form your bait pile
-
No kidding, no choice but to be patient!! Have a safe trip and I hope they hammer your baits, right before you get back. :)
-
Bacon grease on top!
-
Anyone got any baits getting hit? I got 2 out last weekend and will be checking them Saturday. There wasn't as much snow as I expected. It seems to be an average year for getting around and the grass is just starting to grow where I was.
-
I put a few miles today on primo bear roads and no signs of them grazing ditches yet...soon!
-
I have a couple of stands in and bait barrels in, but I have yet to put any bait out. Going to stuff the barrels on Saturday. Not in a rush this year.
