Title: Need a new truck
Post by: crowinghen on March 15, 2019, 02:20:08 PM
Looking for opinions on trucks- thinking of a Ford f150 4x4 with extended cab- new or  lightly used. Any opinions on the trucks or dealers would be welcome!
Thanks

Just an FYI, I had a good experience with Titus-Will with my last truck purchase. I got a 2014 2500HD used in 2015 with 125 miles on it when I picked it up, about 5K under blue book.

Personally have a F-150.crew cab with the short.bed that makes for a very comfortable back seat.  Shopped.around and ended up with the best deal at Titus Will. I think you need to think about.what you will be doing the majority of the time with the truck. For me 95 percent of the time is highway driving (and a good percentage of that with 2 or more passengers, hence the roomy back seat). Maybe the other 5 percent of the time is off road hunting or scouting around. F-150 rides great, is very quiet and is the 4th one I've owned. I have a 5x10 utility trailer I hook up when I need more room than the bed offers. Over the years I've owned just about all different makes and have had the best luck with the Ford's. Only takes one lemon to make you shy away from one brand or another and I've had my share of those with some of the others.  I've got 82,000 miles on it now in only the two years since I bought it new-only have had to change oil and get new tires.

I just picked up an 2013 f150 lariat crew cab with 6'6" bed and 3.5l ecoboost motor. I haven't got to really test it but so far so good

Thanks for the replies
It's going to be used for general hauling, driving to Snoqualmie forest hunting, hauling wood, and hay for our cows- we have access to a flat bed trailer for the hay hauling. Don't expect to have passengers too many times, but want to have that option, also for storing/hauling our guns and bows and gear when hunting.Occasionally driving over the pass when visiting our kids in Ellensburg.

I ordered my 2019 (delivered 1/9/19) and so far (3,000 miles) I freaking love it!

3.5L wants to squirt out from underneath you, mid-range is ridiculous.  I opted for the Super Cab due to rarely hauling people.  I also opted for the 8 foot bed and am very very happy I did, my jon boat and kayak don't hang out any farther than when I had my F350 with the 8' bed.  I had to order because I wanted a Lariat and a Lariat with an 8' bed is almost unheard of.

Thing rides awesome, turns tight, remembers up to 10 different trailers and records mileage pulled for each!  The cab is nice and quiet and the ventilated seats have changed my life forever   :chuckle:

And the new fords come with heated tailgates which is a nice option.

You don't need to worry about this option as long as you have friends with Toyotas  :chuckle:

Ok, I must be missing something, what purpose does a heated tailgate have?

It allows you to keep your hands warm when you have to push your Ford home. 😂

They use to have a beer holder spot in the tailgate, a heater would heat up your beer

And now the story. Crowinghen and I pull into the dealership to look at the truck we saw on-line. The salesman ask if we want to take it for drive, well of course we do. We pull out of the lot and at the first stop light the truck dies, great, a lemon, wife asks "are we out of gas?", no, we're good there. I restart the truck and we're off, the next light the truck dies again. At this point I just want to get this POS back to the lot. I baby it back, putting it nuetral at every light so it won't die. As we make our way back we decide our 96 Cherokee was just fine and we did not need a truck. Pulling into the lot the salesman comes out all smiles and asks how did it go? I reply, "you better take this POS back to the service department because it dies at every light". After a second he says,"I forgot to tell you, it's suppose to do that". Crowinghen and I think he is just screwing with us,  just trying to make a sale. I ask him WhyTH would I want a truck that shuts down whenever I stop. He explains the feature and what it's for, of course I'm skeptical, but he did say I could shut it off if I wanted to. I then ask him, " can't I just buy a normal truck without all these gadgets on it"? He inform me that this is a "normal truck" and compared to most it didn't have that many gadgets. We did go back out for a less stress full drive, this time he went with us to make sure us rednecks didn't have anymore issues.

He should have said it is the new Anti-theft feature  :chuckle:

I picked up a rental car in Oklahoma City and drove 200 miles east to a stone quarry for a meeting the next morning. Didn't stop until I hit a random intersection in the middle of nowhere Oklahoma, and the car died. WTF. Started it up and made it to the next town. Did the same thing to me. I randomly pushed the gas as I was sitting there steaming and it fired up and took off. I realized what was happening at that point but it made for a few tense moments! Dang rental car company didn't say a word about it.

I'm a Toyota guy, but since you're already thinking Ford, I won't even try.  Good luck!
Toyota here too. 2003 Tacoma now at 441K miles with original engine and tranny.  Starting to think myself what to do for a new truck when it’s time.

So on these vehicles that shut off and restart at stop lights....do you have to replace the starter and battery every other month?

I could just see myself flipping out about the damn car dying at the intersection, not knowing that is was supposed to do that. I hear the engines that shut down extra cylinders are starting to burn up those cylinders and oil pressure is getting wacky because they pressurize the crankcase and it's wreacking havoc on the cylinders pushing oil into them. Don't know enough about how they work, just passing it along

I rent a bunch of cars and quite a few have that feature.  It doesn't always turn off, if the battery isn't fully charged or you are draining a ton of electricity it won't.  You can shut it off, but then when you get out and back in it turns itself back on.  I can't imagine it would save enough gas to pay for a starter, but who knows.  I do have some fun just flooring it from an off stop to see what happens.

You guys can just turn the stop/start feature off if you’re afraid of it you know.

It’s about emissions output.  Lots of CO exiting the cars when sitting at stops. Lots of criteria has to be met for it to happen and if one of the needs isn’t met, it won’t happen. Won’t happen with a cold engine, won’t happen if the ambient temp is below a certain point, won’t happen if you have the AC or defrost on,  etc. The list goes on. I think ford has 31 different criteria that have to be met for them to shut off at stops. But like I said, you can just turn it off too.
