Title: Half ton tire recommendations
Post by: aer212 on March 20, 2019, 12:43:51 PM
Anyone have suggestions for a good tire for a 2015 Ram 1500 4x4? What I’m looking for is a traction tire but not necessarily a mudder, quiet, long lasting, and 10 ply I would think so not too many flats.

Toyo M55s.   They aren’t cheap.   I’ve ran them for hmmmm 25+ years now.  3 different Dodges and one Ford.   It’s what the loggers use(d) almost exclusively.   I think they are the best of the best.

Been running Duratracs and happy with them - smooth ride, good snow traction, sidewall not bulletproof.

My son has had surprisingly good snow traction with the new BFG Mud T/A KM3 with much stronger sidewalls.  I'm going to give them a try next time.   I didn't think they would be that great on snow - not sure on ice - but he was plowing a couple feet in his Gen 1 Cummins without a problem.

Currently running the at3 but not incredibly impressed.  I'll be going back to the Bridgstone Dueler Revo's on the next set and doubt I'll be doing any further branching out

I really liked my BFG all terrain TA's when they were newer.  As they've worn I find myself spinning trying to climb hills on the logging roads.  They don't do so well on the loose gravel.
YMMV.

guess I haven't got enough miles on the A/TW3 yet, seem good now though.

assume you all got the 10ply?  I had to special order them

Love my Falkin wild peak AT/3. Made two trips to WY with them on ice and snowy roads and the iciest trip ever on I-90 to WY in Nov. There 10 ply on my 2016 Ford F-150.

In the last 5 years I've run cooper stt's, toyo mt's, and falken wildpeak at3w's.  Not even considering price the Falkens are my top choice out of the 3, so if you factor in value its the falkens by a mile for me.  Toyo,s are hands down the worst. :twocents:

I got the best price off the net/tire rack and discount tire matched them. I sizes down from 265 /70 /17 to 245 /75 17. Truck handles just fine with them. Putting my 265 P rated tires that came with the truck back on this month to save some ware on my LT Falkins.

I had the toyo M/T's before I switched to A/T's the M/T's were pretty soft rubber and wore out way faster than my A/t's I've had 3 sets of A/T's now and they have held up great.

I'm on my second set of these (KO2s) on my 2009 Ram 1500.  Traction degrades noticeably at 50% tread wear, however I got 40,000 miles out of the first set before replacing them at 50%.  Very impressed with this tire on snow, ice, gravel and dirt in the first half of tread life.  Not the best mudder I've ever had but for a quiet tire with excellent overall traction I'm quite pleased.

I’ve had good luck with Goodyear MTR’s getting 50k+ out of them and also Toyo At Xtreme.

Moved away from Toyo ATs, they chunk out too fast on logging roads I work on. I probably do 75% highway, 25% logging roads and drive 45k per year. I've got 60k on my BFG KO2s and they're awesome. Just today blew through a snowed out road about 16-20" deep, 15% grade for a couple hundred yards. They handle well in snow, mud, ice, and wet roads. I'll stick with them for my next set again for sure.

M-55s are too heavy for typical passenger trucks and kill your mileage. Toyo MTs will be too loud and have too much tread for what you need.

Flip a coin between Nitto Ridge Grappler or Cooper Discoverer ST Maxx. BFG All Terrain is a good choice, unless you drive lots of gravel, these throw gravel pretty bad. Toyo M-55 is very durable and a good choice too, IMO it's noisier than the others listed.

Cooper Discovery AT3.  10 ply, 65k warranty, and cheaper than BFG's.  I am on my second set and have been very pleased.

I switched from AT KOs (my normal standby) to Cooper ATs in 2015 because of price. A year and 15k miles later, I had my first blowout on the road, ran over a price of angle in the dark, went right through the tread!
Went back to Discount Tire that morning and they gave me full price of the Coopers in exchange for a new set of AT KOs.

Lesson learned.

This Cooper discoverer st Maxx is the one I ended up going with and it is also the one that was recommended to me prior to me asking the question on here but I wanted to see what everyone else’s experience was before deciding. My brother has the Nitto ridge grappler and is happy with them but I didn’t want the same tire he has. The m-55’s don’t come in my size. Probably the next one that I would consider was picked on here was the Falken wildpeak.

I worked for Les Schwab in the late 80's and we sold a ton of m 55's to the loggers to put on there crumies.  They wore like iron.  It was the shiz dizzle.  Toyo then changed rubber compoundand it they didn't get the life out of them like before.  Now that being said, still one of the best on the road.

I got the tires and have a initial review already. I went in the wet heavy snow and they went good until the belly started dragging too much, so traction was great. They are slightly louder than the wild country they replaced but not enough to be a problem. Here’s what I don’t like, they seem like they are all over the road, like they roll on the sidewall or something. Not sure what I’m going to do about that yet.

Sometimes they will settle down after time. Sometimes not. That's why I hated Goodyear Progrades. Felt like driving on marbles.

My goodyear duratracs are soft riding but were a lil squirmy at recommended pressure.  I put on a set of King Coilovers up front and shocks in rear and squirmy dissappeared.   Not saying to spend $2k to fix tire squirm but maybe leveling kit helps.

m55,s are super tough if your gonna be in rock but with the hard rubber dont provide the best traction , the firestone revos are a good mix and the leswabb house brand snow tire is a great tire and provides great ice traction though it plugs up in mud . i can honestly say i'm never buying another toyo though. if your looking for a mud tire the bf goodrich mt would be a good choice imo . i like a shorter life span tire with better traction.

M55 ride fine. It's the crombie that rode like crap...  something about driving 50 over potholes to smooth out the ride has something to do with it.

If you plan on driving in snow and ice, the M55 Open Countrys are HORRIBLE tires. They don't wear well. I owned them on my F150 and got rid of them. They are too hard of a tire unless you like wasting a lot of money on hype or very expensive name brands...

I used to be a big Toyo fan. Good traction, good wear, great ride. All have gone downhill on last couple sets I bought. My AT2s got really slick at about 60 percent. The HTs on my Duramax were a bear to get smooth ones. Replaced 2 before they could get the vibration out. The Z900 ultras on my wifes car sucked. Replaced 6 of the 4 tires to try to get rid of the vibration couldn't do it. Schwabs stepped up to the plate though and swapped out for 4 Michelens and smooth as silk. Don't know what happened to Toyo but they aint what they used to be.

Arent you in Arizona, what do you know about snow and ice? :chuckle:

Funny how folks have complete opposite opinions.   Ive staked my life many times on these tires and I wont hesitate to do so in the future.  From Methow Winters to Colville Reservation roads and North Idaho roads, and now to the Yakima Basalt and routine trips on the firing center which often eats tires like candy. I commute 50 miles everyday now in the ice belt. Toss in a roadtrip to Utah, Eastern ORegon or Montana, WTH.  I drive in some serious crap. lol    It must just be my driving skills.  :)

Another vote for Falken AT3w.
My LT falkens ride smooth and quiet, grip is fantastic, no signs of chunking on Basalt.
They balance with very little weight.
Recent reviews on BFG ATs scares me away from those.
Only downside is they’re heavy.
If you frequent the Toyota forums, you’ll see most threads talk about how a tire looks.
Buy for function.
Great pricing at Tire Rack.
