Title: Which Wall Tent (Poll) TENT PURCHASED
Post by: jrebel on March 20, 2019, 04:19:54 PM
Selling the travel trailer and going back to a wall tent for hunting.   What is the best of the best???  Pro's and Con's of the tents.  This will likely be the last tent I buy, so I won't skimp.  Optimal size will be 14x16 or something close.  What options so you all like.  Last tent I had was purchased used so I got what I got.  I really liked multiple windows and the screen door options.

Do people like the double door options?  Why or why not?
What about the an awning??  looks nice...would you do the sides on an awning?  How big of an awning?

Anything else??

Thanks

Johnny

We bought a 16x20 tent two years ago and it is awesome. I can't recall the brand but can edit when I remember. It has 5' walls which I think is a must and just one window which is plenty. We do have it set up so that we can add extra frame off the front to add a cooking/storage area but doubt we will use it since there is so much room inside. 14x16 is plenty big for most scenarios and also makes it easier to find suitable spots to set the tent.

The tent I had was a 16x20 with 5' walls.  We called it the circus tent.... :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:  It was plenty big for sleeping, eating, cooking etc.  The only negative....and I mean only negative....was how much it weighed.  Holy moly was that thing heavy and a minimum 2 person set up.

My buddy has a 14x16 which is very comfortable for 2-3 hunters....much more than that and it gets tight for space.  My thought is a really nice 14x16 or 15x15 with a smaller 12 x12 for cooking / storage when we take a truck load of people.  Who knows....maybe after this thread, I will be swayed to go big again.   :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

I haven't....primarily because they are smaller than I am looking for.  They do make one huge tent......but I don't know anthing about them.  Pros vs Cons for a person that owns one??

Last one we had was a Davis tent it has 5' walls which is a must, Windows on all ends for cross ventilation plus you can look outside on all sides of your tent.
Had the vinyl floor insert from davis was great and worth every cent. Sod cloth, storm flap with buckles on both doors in case zipper fails.

Are you refering to the alaknak tents?  A ton of reviews show they get holes in them fairly easily.  I love the idea of light(er) weight, but also want durrability.  This will be a truck camping tent so weight, though considered, is less an issue than durrability.

Is there another option that I am missing with cabalas synthetic?

I have a 14x16 5ft wall, has a window on each side and zipper doors with storm flaps on each end, “The wall tent shop” out of Moscow made it, not a bad quality tent but there are some features I like about other brands mainly Bravos brass ykk zipper vs the plastic that mine has which has failed and needs replacing, also wish I had sleeved ends so you could run the frame out the front for a cook shack however mine is an old model and they may make them like that now. All in all I got a smoking deal on it several years ago and it has lasted through heavy snow, 40+ mph sustained winds and lots of rain. I’ve been quite pleased, we sleep 3-5 in it and use a long rain fly extended off the front 10’ and to the ground for a cook area.

I like the floor being stitched in as a part of the tent, high quality material, ease of setup/take down, and the price. I have had mine in a constant light rain, no leaks. Never had mine in any "storms", but have a reputation of holding up well. They are small, and the one I have 3 hunters would be a bit of a squeeze comfortably. I have the 10x14 flex bow

I don't know about the reviews, the one I have is very durable and I'm pretty rough with it.  With natural materials, you can also get holes plus fun stuff like mold and rot and more prone to leaking.  I have a smaller one than mentioned here, but I can roll up to the site and set it up myself in about 20 minutes without breaking a sweat.  When I roll it up, it doesn't have to be perfectly dry or clean.

With synthetic, you also get benefits like windows, screens doors and windows, pockets, easy to use poles, hooks to hang lights and dry cords, insect and rodent proof and other stuff found in normal tents.

I have six seasons in mine and I can't think of any wear and I use it during hunting season and another week during the summer.

They don't have the same old-timey feeling to them, but man are they easier to take care of and set up.  I don't know that they are much lighter, they still weigh a ton.

Montana canvas is the best I have used. Seems like the Davis canvas of equal oz’s is a lot thinner. Rainier tents are good also. I never liked the double door on the tent because with a 14x16 you can put a bed across the back which is the layout we like best.  Canvas tent all day.

Until your breath freezes to the tent while your sleeping then light the stove off in the morning and it’s raining inside the tent. Soon as the stove goes out they start condensation immediately.

:yeah:  I sold my wall tent canvas wall tent after about 12 hours of scrubbing off the mold after I had put it away completely dry. With the Alaknak or synthetic tent you just need to buy the roof protector or do what we did to ours and cover the entire tent with a tarp which should be done anyway it helps with any condensation. If I had the time  and the space like a barn to hang my wall tent up after each use I might consider going back to canvas but storing and caring for the Alaknak can’t get much easier than that.

I have two 10 x 12.

I have spent so far 120 days in the tents and been in several heavy rain storms.

I think you need to first have a conversation with self.

How important is canvas weight to you?
Will you really be in severe  conditions?
Do you really need a steel frame or can aluminum work?
Will you always have help setting up or on your own?
Do you have a place to dry out the canvas tent after use?

One of mine is made by Reliable Tent and Awnwing . 5oz canvas duck
Aluminum frame
One door
One window.
Snap in floor
 Very well made.

My other
Tent Shop bought used from a buddy.
10 oz Canvas duck
Two windows
Two doors
Heavy vinyl floor.
Steel frame

The first tent is easy to set up and is a quarter of the weight of the 2 nd.

I prefer the aluminum frame to the steel because of weight and because the rafters are two part rather than one long rafter. Way easy to transport. The aluminum frame stay together better during set up than the steel.

I prefer one door over two in fowl weather as the single door seems just snugger on the frame.

I use a dog stove in one a cylinder in the other and I like the square Dog stoves better.

I think the average guy could get along with a plastic tarp floor and ground tarp just fine.

I think the stitching on door zippers is better on the Reliable tent than the Tent Shop Tent.

The Reliable tent came with quality stakes better than what came with the tent shop tent. So much better I got another set to have the same for both tents.

I like the heavy tie down loops at eaves o. Reliable Tent better.

The first tent has a tie in bug screen I ordered. The 2  d tent bug screen at both doors is sewen in. I like the sewn in better.

I prefer the the stove jack to the right inside door.

Both tents could be set up without frame and only Ridge pole.

I do t like the way the stove jack flap ties up out of the way on either tent.

The Reliable tent was 10x12 . But the Tent Shop tent was actually 11 x12.

I have a bravo supergrade and love it.

Main tent is 15x15 with 5’ walls.

Zipper doors on both ends and a stove pipe hole on opposite corners. This way you can roll the tent out on the frame and always have the door facing the right way and have an option of where to put the stove.

Then I have a three sided 15x9, wish I would have gone 15x10 so I didn’t have one set of 4’6” pieces and all the rest 5’, lesson learned. The 15x9 attaches to the 15x15 at the open side and the door goes out. This is our cooking area. I can close the door on the main tent and just heat that area or open the door and heat the whole thing.

I got a door panel piece to add onto the 15x9 so it can be a stand alone cookshack if i don’t have room to set the whole thing up 15x24 or a spike camp tent.

Both tents have removable floor and high wind belt sewn over the tie down loops.

I use 20” long Fence T posts as stakes and ratchet motorcycle straps to tie it down.

I have a 16x25 White nylon snow fly that covers the whole thing.

I heat it with a cylinder stove, outfitter is the size I think.

I have had it for 15 years and absolutely love it.

Only regret is not making that cook shack 10x15 so all the parts interchanged.

Bravo by far!  Outstanding quality. Outstanding service.  All tents will keep you dry if they hold up....Never had a bit of mold on my tents as they were put away dry...if you have put them away dry and they molded...you were too busy admiring your big bull rack!!!!  Nothing molds without water. IF you want the best, call John at Bravo.

It was bone dry when I put it away, problem I think was I had it stored in my garage just off the concrete floor.

Funny I just saw this thread.  I just set up our main 12x18 tent up in the snow to further engineer the woodstove I built. We purchased this canvas wall tent with 9x12 cook shack from John at BRAVO Manufacturing.  I put it up myself under an hour with the kiddos running in and around. :chuckle: We used this last archery season in Idaho for three weeks in the back country. Snow slide and all the extras John would upgrade to. Cant be more happy! As I've stated before about this setup. Pay once cry once...........As for size this is the perfect size.  You can always add more rooms and or extentions. :IBCOOL:

I have a Montana Canvas with the Realight material on the sidewalls which cuts quite a bit of weight. I bought it used 20 years ago and it is still in great shape - five foot sidewalls are a must and if you're buying custom you can put the windows and stove jack where you want them. I also have a Rainier that is also very old and the cotton thread along the zippers is starting to fail but I've got more than my money's worth out of it. For short stays I have a Cabelas BigHorn III and I like the portability of that setup very much but it's cramped compared to the wall tents.

We have a 25 year old 14x24 that was made by some lady in Puyallup, a 10 year old 12x14 Montana and a two year old 14x16 Davis.   They are all 10oz canvas. Only one with a hole is the Montana but it isn't to bad.  None leak and haven't had any mildew issues.  I don't think you can really go wrong with any of them. Find a company that makes them in America and has the features you want.  We went with Davis on the last one because it was the most "Bang for Buck" and it is just our cook tent.  I think it was less then $1100 with poles ropes and stakes.

we have a 14x16 Davis tent we been using for about the last 8 years. Only use it in late archery hunt for 10 days each year. no mold problems what so ever. Canvas is the *censored*. Iv stayed in the Cabelas Alenak and like other said it was raining inside. Wall tents are alot of work but so worth it. I wont use it unless im there for 5 plus days. Otherwise its the back of the canopy on the truck for me

We just bought not to long ago another Davis 14x16 w/ eave sleeves, ridge pole openings, window in the back, storm door and 5ft walls.  The only thing I would change is I would have Davis put a eave sleeve in the ridge instead of a ridge pole opening.  That ridge pole opening is unnecessary for what we are doing and we always have to stuff something in their to mitigate heat loss thru the holes even when closed.  We added a rafter section on the outside for an 8' porch.  Other than that it is the perfect setup for 3 people.

I believe an equally important piece  is going to be the wall tent stove, I would suggest a Qwick Camp Inferno.  It's always easy to damper it down and open a window but it stinks to undersize and have to add wood every 3-4 hours been there, done that.  I oversized this time with a 4 dog and love it, but I don't believe they are making that type of stove anymore I think they went all Ti stoves.

Pros:
Easy up&down by myself
Packed weight 60-70#s
After 8 years in rain, snow high winds=never a problem
Decent ventilation
Comfortable space for two

Cons:
No stove jack (can be done, see 92xj’s thread on his)
Awning fills w/water when raining
Huge PITA to dry out before storage

Davis all the way. 14x16x5. Washington, Oregon and Idaho. Heat, rain, heavy wind and snow. Ordered it with a side wall stove jack. Seen too many leakers in a roof jack in heavy rain. I fabbed up a cylinder stove. Buy Idaho fire logs from Coastal. Two to three logs burn all night. Wake up to heat. Use 4x8 sheets of OSB for the floor with a RV carpet laid over that. They nestle perfectly into the 4x8 utility trailer. Love elk camp!

Davis tent here too, 16x20. It has been a great tent. I went with two stove jacks, one in the wall and one in the roof. I use the roof one 95% of the time.
Elksnout and I picked up our tents the same night at the sportsman show in Portland many years ago now. I remember him asking me if I was on Hunting-Washington..lol

Made the call a few days ago and will be going with the Bravo Super Grade 15x18 with all the bells and whistles.  Build should start early June and be ready for August Bear!!

Also went crazy and bought a Kodiak Deluxe Flex Bow 10x14 for quicker 1-3 day hunts with smaller parties.  Also plan on using it as a kids tent on bigger weekends and possible a eating / cook shack.

Can't wait to be back in a wall tent.

Good choice.

I have the same setups. 15x18 Bravo and the Kodiak 10x14. Love them both. High wind option on the Bravo is awesome for extra tie down strength along the edges.

We have an extra angle kit from John and run a 15x10 awning/vestibule off the wall tent, cover that with a white heavy duty tarp and good to go. (cut the awning frame a little longer so the tarp rides a but higher than the tent).

I also have the Kodiak vestibule which provides a little more coverage of the front, really happy with this setup for family trips.

I went with the high wind package.  The only decision I have to make is how big to make the awning.  My thought is to order the Snow Slide longer than the tent so I can extend it to make the awning.  I was thinking of doing the 15x24, but may need to go a little bigger.  Everything is being made to be reversible with dual stove jacks (opposite corners), front and back doors with screens....so I can just turn the snow slide around to depending on the side I want to run the awning / stove.  Both sides will allow for the angle kits to extend beyond the corners for awnings or to pair additional tends in the future.  It will have a floor, two windows, stove package, high wind package, double door, webbing reinforced eaves, steel frame with added rafter for extra stability, extra angle kit for awning, room divider, heat shields.....etc.  Really went all out as this will be the last wall tent I have to buy.....and will likely be able to pass it down to my kids.

Waiting for it to be built is almost as bad as waiting for my suppressors!!!!  It is hard to sleep at night thinking about it.     :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:  Can't wait for the first hunting trip.

That is a very nice setup.  You'll be ready for the Zombie Apocalypse!  The Bravo is a well-made tent; take care of it and you will be passing it down to the kids.

Wall tents are sweet. We have a 14x16 Davis wall tent. we have slept 4 but if you have more than that you will need a bigger tent.
with that said I am making a wall tent Hybrid, When its done I will be sharing.

Some really great set ups here. Makes me super jealous. We always hunted from a trailer or backpack type tent. But I have a question,......do you use a seperate tent for the hot tub?    :dunno:

First tent arrived and has been set up.  This is the smaller of the tents purchased and will be used as the weekender / quick deploy dent for small hunts / excursions.  It is a Kodiak Canvas 10x14.  These tents get great reviews so I'm pretty excited to put it through the paces.  So far I'm pretty impressed....though I will say that it isn't in the same class a true canvas wall tent.  With that said, it is crazy easy to put up and is super packable.  There is quite a bit of room in it as you can see with the pics.
