Coming out for 2020 F250 and F350 trucks anyone heard the horsepower and torques for this engine.
-
Havent heard but the heated tailgate is a nice option.
-
As of early Feb, no specs had been released.
They have to do something...commercial truck users are getting really fed up with emissions issues with Ford's and everyone else's diesels. They can't use them like they need to use them because the DPF's get plugged up all the time.
-
If it is anything like the smaller EcoBoost engines, it will be something to see.
-
.
-
I read a piece where the engineers said it isn't that different from 6.7 diesel, so the mechanics should be able to work on it with little schooling.
-
Notably absent is any mention of fuel economy, one of the main reasons I haven't considered buying a truck with a big gas engine.
It's also interesting that this won't replace the 6.2 gasser, they will sell both gassers and the diesel. With the several gas engines in the F-150, it's going to be a confusing car lot.

You will see this motor in many fleets. the down time of the diesels is horrible and if it aint turning it aint earning. the Mileage loss is cheaper to absorb than the down time for all the emissions problems that put the 6.7s out of service.
-
GM is supposed to put out a 6.6 gas engine haven't seen much on it yet.

I heard that it was a 6.66 gas, but are trying to figure how to market it.... :chuckle:

No specs have been released yet, so definitely no fuel economy ratings, but what would you expect from a 7.3 liter gas engine? It's going to be horrible. These trucks are sold without fuel economy ratings anyway once they're over 8500# GVW.
This engine won't go into the F150's. Pretty sure the 6.2 doesn't go in the F150's anymore either. I might be wrong there. Pretty sure your options for F150 is 2.7 and 3.5 ecoboosts, 5.0 Coyote and the diesel. This is a good move from Ford. Federal emissions requirements are making the diesel trucks non-conducive to the commercial market. Too much down time due to emissions issues. I deal with these guys every day. More and more are going away from diesels every day and to the current big gas engines. This will be an improvement on those engines.
-
Yeah, I wasn't thinking these would go into the F-150, just that there would be a ton of choices for engines if a guy was considering an F-150 or F-250/350 and trying to compare purchase cost, fuel economy, tow capacity, etc. It seems to me there are a bunch of motor options which get me a little nervous. It's hard to do them all right and I wonder if they are in the advance stages of figuring out what platforms to settle on and retire the rest. I can't see a long-term solution of having that many motors in development and maintenance.
I haven't written off fuel economy for larger capability motors, look what they did with the tiny gassers. Interestingly enough, they are going the opposite way here with a huge motor instead of getting more out of a smaller motor - maybe just the quickest way to fix the diesel problem short term and not completely loose commercial market share?
-
not suprising, when you make a diesel breathe in and out through a straw, and increase cost of purchase and maintenance, people are going to get irritated. Glad i still got my old Diesel 7.3 :chuckle:

In order to work on this new engine are they going to have to take the cab off?
-
jackelope, since you're our resident Ford guy, if you ever get a chance, could you suggest to the powers to be that we'd reallllllllly appreciate it if Ford would do a 5.0 Coyote Ecoboost for the F150.

It's unknown to us at this point...but nothing current model requires cab removal.

The supercharged 5.0 is kinda fun.
I drove one for a couple of days.
Oh my......

I'd be happy with a supercharged 5.0 Coyote motor in the F150 as a factory option too. I had a TRD supercharger put on my 13 Tacoma when I bought it new and can tell you first hand, they make a BIG difference, and I'm only using the standard size pulley it came with, and easy swap to the next size smaller and you pick up another 30-40hp.
I've been reading there may be a special addition Ford Raptor coming out in 2020 that has the supercharged 5.2 motor from the Mustang GT500 which would be pretty fricken cool but unfortunately they'll probably want somewhere around 100K for one of those model Raptors. :yike:
So if Jackelope can put the word into Ford, I would be plenty happy with a Ecoboost or Supercharged 5.0 Coyote motored F150 as a factory available option. ;)

I've heard that Raptor is going to be a thing.
As far as your supercharger dreams, you can get a Roush dealer to install a supercharger on yours...the kit runs about 8 grand.

You could also buy a Raptor and send it to California to Hennessy Performance and have them turn it into a Velociraptor.

I laughed at the "in block cam" wording also. makes me like it better tho.

My bad, I forgot to add, along with wanting a boosted 5.0 Coyote motor, regardless of if it's turbos or SC, I want it to be "easy" and come as a factory option will full warranty that I can just go purchase from my local Ford dealer. I'm not sure how the Roush SC setup works and if it voids any factory warranties. I know with the TRD SC setup on my Tacoma, it was as if it came from the factory that way and did not void any part of the factory warranty.
Not really asking for much, am I :chuckle:
The "in block cam" thing was kinda funny and when I read that I rolled my eyes and thought, oh we've now come full circle because they're marketing a conventional cam setup as something new. lol
But, I suppose, depending on your age, and the fact OHC motors have been more the "norm" for some time now, I could see some age groups not really knowing what, in block cam, really even means or thinking it was maybe something new.

We're not a Roush dealer, but I believe if you buy the truck with the supercharger setup from a Roush approved or certified or whatever you call it Ford dealer, it's covered under warranty. Ford Racing is all covered under warranty if dealer installed. We can do that.

an interesting fact, the last pushrod v8 ford designed was the 400, back in 1971.

Is that Because they ran with the 351C, 351W, 460 for thirty years?
Like Chevy ran the 350 for the same period
:chuckle:

This motor has paused my purchase of the new ram with a 6.4 and a 8 speed, still may go that route, but i wanna see the 7.3 specs first.
Hasn't been mentioned yet, but its also going to be mated up to a 10 speed! Gonna be a powerhouse for a work truck for sure.

yeah, and all those engines were designed years earlier.
The small block ford and smallblock chevy had about the same production lifespan but ford went to ohc designs while chevy stayed with pushrods(lt1, ls series etc).
I have much more respect for ohv designs and their simplicity these days.

Chevy is also coming out with a 6.6 V8. 3 good gas engines coming out. Everything Ive read said that 8 speed should be great behind the 6.4 hemi. I had a 2017 6.4 and traded it off for a cummins.
-
So how would the new 7.3 compare to the old 460?
My dads got about 4 mpg, lol

If it has a 10 speed tranny as mentioned that in itself will make a big difference, not to mention a lot of engineering since then for better mileage.

The 10 speed trans seems to have a love/hate relationship with owners. The way it shifts all over the place seems to throw people off.

My dad has a new F150 with the 3.5 Ecoboost and that new 10 speed trany. I really haven't driven it that much, but when I have, I found it rather annoying how it seemed to constantly be shifting. I'm sometimes weird about things like that so I just figured it was either me or maybe it was something you have to get used to by driving it more but after reading the above, I guess it's not just a me thing and it sounds like other people finding it annoying as well. My dad on the other hand is part of the love it crowd and is constantly telling me how awesome those new 10 speed trans are.
My wife has a new Explorer with the 3.5 Ecoboost, it's a completely different layout and only has a 6 speed trans. I don't drive it very much but the little I have driven it, I like that setup better.
I'm sure the 10 speed is probably the better setup, but it would certainly take some getting used to, at least it would for me.

It’s a weird thing for sure. It does do the adaptive learned shifting so if you just jumped in it and test drive it, it will probably feel more weird because it’s “learned” your dads driving habits.
