Title: Who’s excited for the WA draw? Poll
Post by: CarbonHunter on April 26, 2019, 09:51:15 PM
We all know what the quotas are and we know if we have a multiple season tag. So how do you really feel about the upcoming draw?

Not counting on drawing anything myself. With my 22 moose points my odds of drawing a moose tag are probably just as good as drawing a quality elk permit with my 10 points. Quality deer only have 6. So not good for me, but I'm hoping my daughter draws at least a youth doe permit. She drew an elk permit last year, her first year hunting, so I think elk is unlikely, but with her two deer points she should have a chance for that one. Even better would be one of the ewe sheep tags.

I had 10 points for quality elk and deer but after the quotas came out I’m just glad I already bought my idaho tags.

I'm less excited about the Washington draw this year because I have out of state plans so it's gonna be points only with the exception of a second deer application. Ordinarily I love the anticipation of the draw, making tentative plans, dreaming about the buck, bull or moose that I'm going to kill, imagining what I'll do with the meat and how the mount will turn out .......... and then draw day comes along and I get that old kicked in the jimmies dose of reality.

I have decided to put my money here instead: https://www.megamillions.com/  . If I win I can buy guided hunts in many states.

I am more excited about my son’s chances for the youth tags. He has average or over points in all categories and his odds just went way up for getting a juvenile ram tag. I seem to of burnt all my luck up last year  with my moose tag. Struck out on multi season elk with eight points, multi deer with 2, no spring bear tag, And our group did not draw our Montana tags for the first time in the last four years. So I will definitely be making my donation but can’t say I will be too surprised if I don’t draw anything. Rifle cow tag is Really probably my only realistic chance.

Sorry to not be putting in for the blues for elk this year, first time in a very long time.  Probably put in for a rifle rut tag so my odds will go down, 24 points quality elk. I don't expect to draw, but you never know.  Just hope my dad draws his tag, his health is just not getting better. Good luck guy/gals.

Nope.  After 34 years of applying for sheep, moose and goat, I gave up goat and went in as a group with my daughter on the rest.  I'm about to say piss on it especially when I see so many people, even a few that I personally know draw tags with only a few point for units that they don't even know what part of the state they are in.  I wish I could get some of my $$ back for wasting my time.

It's never a waste of time to apply in a random system.  Oil tags are not a guarantee.  There will never be enough animals to give out enough tags to guarantee all applicants a tag.  No different thanPowerball, scratch tickets, or the casino. Odds are low but someone has to win! I'm always excited and optimistic about every app I throw out.  I'm also realistic about how the draw system works and what the odds are.

Only have 6 points, as that's as long as I lived here.  Decided to stop buying moose, sheep, goat as I just don't believe I'll ever draw based on my age.  Too bad I can't donate those points to somebody.

I still put in for quality elk, deer, and second deer.  Even though I know I won't draw the quality tags....probably my last year on those.  Was going to put in for a cow elk tag that had an average drawn with 5pts in the regs, but figured a lot of guys will point-only quality bull and maybe put in for cow and raising the points required.....didn't want to be locked in on spikes.  So will stick to west side OTC elk again.  Most of my hunting focus is on Oregon again, but I still hunt WA on the OTC elk/deer/bear/cougar tags every year.

You sort of could....find someone just starting out with a lot less points.  Go in as a group, size is limited to two.  You'd be bumping up their odds.

someone with 1pt just starting will have better odds of getting a tag than ANY group app regardless of points.  When you are looking at sheep and goat tags that have 1-3 tags you do yourself no favors.

Kselkhunter, the only way to guarantee you dont draw is to not apply.  It's an added opportunity not a guarantee.  Points mean nothing and NEVER base choices off the "average points" that are in the regs.  That number is an average of all successful applicants for that hunt.  You get one guy in there with 1pt and it throws the whole thing off.  They need to do away with that in the regs.  It leads to false Hope's and anger when a guy with 11pts doesnt draw a tag "that only takes 5."

I’ve only drawn one quality tag in my life, but I am always excited for the drawing.  June is my favorite month with Idaho, Wyoming and Washington results coming out.

I did bypass the draw to ensure that I have a quality hunt in my home state this year, but that’s only for rat deer.    :chuckle:

Exactly, this is a bonus point system not preference point! Why is this such a difficult concept for people to grasp? It’s just a shade above random really...

bonus point systems really shine when the draw odds suck way too much for a preference point system.  Keeps the low point guys playing (and the high point guys hope this year is the year!)

So are you saying that points don't matter? Points get squared for the drawing according to the regs. Of course if you put in for a group drawing with four hunters and the remaining available slots are three then of course you wasted your draw but if you have ten points you have one hundred times the odds of an individual that has only one point to get drawn. Of course if one million people put in for the same draw your odds plummet no matter how many points you or they have. Points matter.

Yes they give you a better chance of drawing but there is never a guaranteed draw! It’s a waste of time looking at the “average points drawn” column in the refs. You still have to get lucky.

To bypass the average number thing, You can dive in to the data and see what point holder were chosen and go through year to year and see how many points each person had that drew. It's crazy seeing the max point carriers not getting picked and people with 3 or 4 drawing.  It's a random draw with bonus points . Nothing is guaranteed that's for sure.

At this point the only meaningful thing that can increase draw odds is to have more wildlife. That can probably only be accomplished by reducing the predator footprint, which includes hunters, indian tribes, poachers, and the ever expanding population of 4 legged predators.

As far as I know WDFW is only restricting hunters, I'm not sure if that will make the difference needed?

It will better for all of you next year. I have over 20 points for sheep, moose and goat. Close to ten for Qbull, Qbuck etc. Will be a resident of Montana by fall of 2020 so I will no longer put in for Wa. Wish I could donate my points to some young upcoming hunter so by the time he/she is 60 they maybe could have a quality hunt.

Odds of drawing are slim but still fun to try.  I do my dream hunt every year with an OTC tag in Oregon for elk.  Drawing a quality elk tag here just means I dont have to drive as far.  16 pts for deer at 52 years of age has me a little worried lol.  Moose, sheep and goat I dont think I will ever draw so it is like buying  lotto ticket.

Just starting the points game but I'm optimistic about getting drawn. Put in for a few draws last year but all of them this year. May take me several years but I'm with Karl. I don't see the point of submitting for points only. Heard too many stories about people being drawn with little or few points. You bet if I get drawn my focus will be to capitalize on that draw and learn everything I can about that unit. Started out bird hunting when I got my first shotgun in '13. Shot my first deer in '14 borrowing my brothers rifle. Bought a bow in '16. Got my own rifle in '17. Muzzy in '18 and successfully filled my first deer tag on a solo hunt last year after getting drawn for MS deer with no points and hunting all three weapons.  :IBCOOL: To excited (naive) to let the odds get me down. I love turkey hunting but this big game hunting is starting to get fun!

Plus, its easier to sell it to the wife that I "must" to go hunting if I have some Special Tag  :chuckle:

I came to terms a long time ago that I would probably never draw a OIL or a Quality tag but had really thought that I would eventually draw a Bull permit.  Now with roughly 1/4 of the permits that were available just 4 years ago its looking like I may never draw that tag either.  I personally think that reducing bull permits is not going to solve a single thing.  Besides all the other issues they should of first eliminated every single antlerless permit.  If herd growth was wanted thats what would of happened.  Everytime you kill a cow you are reducing the herd by 2 and its exponential over the years.  All they have done by eliminating bull permits is allow more natural deaths of older bulls and left more for the natives.

I'm spending my WA draw money on an OTC reduced spring bear in Idaho.  Two full months of spring bear plus helping predator control is so much better than wasting the same money year after year on a doomed State.   :twocents:

I have come to realize that I am an odd combination of being generally optimistic, but not very lucky.  I moved back to Washington State after 10 years in the Army and started building points in 2001.  Have never drawn a quality tag.  But every year I honestly think "This could be my year.."

That being said... I started hunting Idaho two years ago and have started building points in Wyoming.  I used to hunt the general elk season here in WA, but now use my time to hunt ID instead.  If I draw a good tag, I'll hunt WA.  As a teacher I get almost no time off in the fall.  Gotta go where the animals are...

I always buy the permit apps. Odds are slim and worse this year for permits but I still lay down a Jackson for the MegaMillion drawing every time it is close to five hundred million, too.

just a formality for me anymore great if I draw, but I sure dont rely on WA draw for anything great.
:yeah: but with that said, I've never been on a bad permit hunt.  You draw a tag, you are gonna have a good hunt.

As long as you put in serious effort.

I've seen a lot of complaints about crappy permit hunts.  The few I have been on have been amazing though.
yes I was gonna say that but some people get very offended when their effort is brought into question.  I've had permits the same year as others on here and we've had vastly different experiences :chuckle:

Please don’t forget.....others may not be able to hike in miles or do steep and deep. Hunting the best they can, I applaud them no matter what their skill level/physical abilities are.  :twocents:

correct.  That's why I did not initially mention it.  Everyone has a different level of "hard".  With that said, a lot of people are just lazy too :chuckle:

Just curious Karl; was he a fairly "new" hunter in the WDFW system?  Meaning that his Wild ID# is "newer" than ours?

nope he's been hunting Washington for 40 years but recently decided to dip into the oils.  I'll have to ask him again on his points.  I'm second guessing myself now and thinking it was 6.  Regardless it wasn't very many

Not real excited but will apply just in case its my lucky year - never drawn anything except a cow elk permit twice - 20+ years of applying

I used to get really excited but started hunting out of state 4 years ago and have in a short time already killed a bigger buck and bigger bull than I killed on the quality tags I drew in Washington in 2008. I feel the otc tags of other states are just as good as the best quality tags our state has to offer. Hard to get excited these days but I do have a lot of points for this state.

Getting down to the last week... anyone feeling any different about their feelings earlier in the process?  I gave in and applied for quality elk and the oil tags but gave up on the rest.

I'm always excited about the draw and this year is no different. I'm only in for six myself, but my daughter is in for 11. I'm really expecting her to draw a youth doe permit, since she'll have two points and odds are 1 in 3. None of the others are easy draws so I have no expectation for anything but the one doe permit. But I'd say we have a fair chance of drawing at least one other hunt out of the 16 applications.

Last year I expected she'd draw the youth deer permit, and she didn't, but instead got a youth cow elk permit. I'd be fine with that again this year. But even if we have zero luck in the draw, we've got a cabin reserved in eastern Washington for the first five nights of the modern firearm mule deer season. So I'm excited about this year's hunting season, no matter if we draw special permits or not.

Looking at GoHunt I’m hoping a couple family members draw decent deer tags. Not guaranteed but odds are good odds for WA.

I drew the East side hunter education incentive tag for any Bull elk in GMU's 336-346 so I'm good, should be a great year.
After having my knee replaced a year ago, and turning 62 this month I'm running at about 50%, but in all honestly I get more excited helping youth get there first Deer or Elk

I’m only putting for moose this year. I drew quality bull in ‘16 and quality deer last year. Just don’t see myself drawing again for a long while.

Any idea on when I’ll lose the points I have aquired if I stop applying?

That's awesome!  How many points did you have?  I haven't drawn an HE tag for a few years.

looking forward to hunting elk in the rut, This is my 2nd incentive tag as a instructor, I had a any deer tag in the 400 gmu's a fews back passed on a few small bucks ended up eating my tag, it was a blast best season ever.

Gzzz it takes forever. Hard to get excited. Still one more week to put in for tags. Then how long will it take? A month?

You’ll always have the points but there’s no guarantee there will be any tags for that category. Look at conflict goat if you want the proof.

Had a late whitetail HE tag a few years ago.  Weather didn't cooperate and I wound up eating it too(only had one weekend to hunt).  Good luck with the elk tag!
