Title: New tire time, can't decide which ones
Post by: yorketransport on April 27, 2019, 07:42:44 PM
That's right, one single tire. >:( I'll end up replacing all 4, but I've got 1 tire that's just been nothing but trouble. This is my 3rd set of Cooper AT 3s and they might be my last. I got about 50K and 55K miles on the last two sets (one set on a Silverado 1500 and the second on a 2500 Duramx) and this set has 22K on my Duramax and the tread is just melting off of them. Then there's the one tire that's wearing 50% faster than the rest. No matter what I've done with rotating and inflation, this one tire is just melting off the rim. 3 of the tires are at about 40% tread and this one tire is down to about 15-20%. I had the problem tire patched about a month ago after a piece of rock went right through the tread, and today while I was out in the woods (30 miles from the gate) I noticed that the same tire is starting to separate, so I threw the spare on and headed home.

I'm pretty much done with the AT 3s now and I've got the replacements narrowed down to either the Toyo M55 or the Cooper ST Maxx. Close to half the miles I put on my truck are on gravel roads and I've been told that both of those tires do extremely well under those conditions. Does anyone have any experience with both tires and have an opinion on which one's better?

I really don't want to spend $1500 on a full set of tires, but I don't like having mismatched tires or tread.  :bash:

I've had really good traction from Cooper tires but they don't last very well. I'm probably going to switch tire brands too, I'm also undecided!

I've had great tread life with them in the past on my trucks and I've used them on a Durango in the past and still use them on my Cherokee, but this most recent set (one tire specifically) has been pretty bad. I asked the shop about it when I this tire patched a couple weeks ago and was just told that it's wearing down because of my driving conditions. When I asked why the other 3 weren't as bad I was told that maybe that one tire was just slipping more in the rocks and that's why it was wearing faster. :dunno:

Oh.. I have and love BF Goodrich AT tires, but my 3/4 ton will eat them up in 30K miles if I run them dang near bald.  I will either accept that is all I will get out of any tire on a 3/4 ton, or look to try Faulken Wildpeak AT3s.  I put a set on my son's Wrangler and they are still going strong after 30k.  I expect to get 50 out of them at this point.  I am tough on tires with a lot of miles in the mountains.

I have Cooper STT Pro’s on my Tundra, and by the looks of it, I should get 50-60k out of them (currently at 31-32k). A little loud on the freeway, but good traction off road.

After comparing tires for semi-trucks for 20 years and being just as bad for my pickups, this is what I swear by:
Hankook Dyna Pro 10 ply
and
Mitchelin LTX 10 ply.

I loved the Mitchelin the best. More of a freeway tire, great wear and probably the best radial truck tire on the market.

I shopped around and paid right at $225 each.

Both are 275x70 x17

2013 Chev LT 4x4 with Duramax and Allison trans.

The ST Maxx have been the best set I've had on a 08 2500 Ram 6.7 tire eater (140k miles). Great all around tire. It's had Toyo MT, Nitto Trail Grap, BFG All Terrain and will have the ST Maxx on again when the current ones go.

Hey Yorke, I'm sure this is something thats likely already been checked, but the one that is wearing faster isn't by chance a different load range is it?

It's been my experience load range E or 10 ply tires tend to wear considerably longer than the others.  You pay for it in ride quality, particularly on 1/2 ton pickups, but they just seem to wear a good bit longer.

The toyo m55’s are known for wearing like iron on the heavy trucks. Might want to give them a try. :twocents:

I had BFG a/t on my 3/4 ton Cummins and they didn’t last long and felt like they had poor wet weather traction. I put a set of Nitto ridge grapplers on a couple years ago and they are awesome, great wet weather traction, really good snow traction and are wearing very well. They are also a load range F so they work great for heavy towing.

Another hound hunter friend is running the Hankook Dyna Pro's, he had over 50k on them, that's pretty good mileage for a hound hunter. They aren't great traction but they are good for a lot of miles. There was a used set on a truck I bought and I got as many miles out of them as I'm getting with new Cooper STT's. But it seems mileage is never as good with aggressive tires.   :dunno:

M55's have been great for me. No traction problems. Properly inflated wear well, Never had a flat. I have to say the ride is a bit rough and there seems to be a lot of weights added to balance. I'm just being picky though, The ride is probably comparable to similar type.

That's what's got me so annoyed with this whole thing, the full set are load range E tires with the same date code. There's just one tire that's wearing down faster than the rest. This same tire has been punctured 3 times now and none of the others have had an issue.

After comparing tires for semi-trucks for 20 years and being just as bad for my pickups, this is what I swear by:
Hankook Dyna Pro 10 ply

I had a set of the Hankook Dyna Pros on my F150 for about 25K miles and they were great. I switched them over to my F250 when I bought that and I burned through the tread in record time.

I want to try to the M55s, but I can get the ST Maxx for almost $100 less per tire. Getting the M55s means I need to cut into my gun fund, and I really don't want to do that! :chuckle:

I had the M55's on my F150 and they have to be the worst tires I ever owned. ZERO traction in the snow and ice, hard riding too. 10 ply tires. This is from experience living where the weather is horrible in Curlew.

I got rid of them. Certainly better tires for $1300 out there.

What Campmeat said.  I have owned my 2500HD for 17 years and have had only 2 flats/punctures.  Both of them were on the M55's.  Those were absolute garbage.  Terrible traction too.

The Michelin’s are awesome tires.  I have a set of Good Year Wranglers mounted on separate wheels, studded,  that are great in the sand and deep snow but, the LTX are far better in the rain, snow and ice.  They also wear like iron on my 07 Ram 3500 Diesel.  I can’t attest to how they would hold up on nothing but logging roads but they do see logging type roads each year for many miles and seem to do fine. I’ve never had a flat with them.  :twocents:

I run BFG AT's on every pu I own, love them. On the 76 GMC they lasted for years, can't tell you miles cause the odometer don't work but they lasted 2  engines and only had to replace them because of side rot. Is it possible that your one tire developed a wear pattern while under inflated ? Once a tire developes a wear pattern "under inflated or misaligned" it will continue no matter where you rotate it to.
Another thing, I set my camber as close to zero as possible and set the castor as low as I can get away with, and set the toe closer to zero to create less drag and take as wide of turns as I can. Helps a bunch on the cupping issue a lot of tires have. I don't know about all these other tires but the BFG's have been good to me. Every thing from sand, to mud, to snow or ice.
Good luck on your search.

They have pretty good traction too, maybe I'll give them a try next go around. I'm pretty hard on tires pulling big trailers quite often, but if I could get even 30k out of a set of tires it would be great.

Yokohama Geolander MT’s

I just tripped 40k on a RAM 2500 Diesel.

They wear excellent
They aren’t loud
Great traction
10 ply

Reasonably priced as well. I paid $1325 out the door for 35’s.

I ended up  at $1380 out the door for the full set of 285/75 R16s. Not the cheapest set of tires I've bought, but not the most expensive either. I probably could have found them cheaper somewhere else but Walt's Tire Factory here in Yelm has always been good to me so I just got them there.

We had two sets of Falken tires on my wifes Mazda 3 in the last 3 years, I don't remember which model exactly but it the Falken line up it was considered "best" tire. The tires were rated for 60k miles, first set got 22k miles, we got those warrantied and the replacement set got less than 12k miles. I will never buy another Falken tire.

I have a set of Falken MT tires on my 1/2 ton Ford. Drove up to Alaska and back. They now have about 8,000 miles on them and you can hardly see any wear. Zero cupping! I previously had the ATH3s and got over 60,000 miles. Best tires I've ever owned.

So far running these goodyear ultra I have few thoughts.  Half ton tire imop.  Lots of good, wet traction is good.  Dry good, quiet.  Handles light.  Towing with diesel heavy they suck.  Squishy tread or sidewalls.  I do not like em when towing.  Running empty I notice slight softness in corners but with any weight it bad.  I had nittos before and didn't like em much but they were solid and not soft. Handled fine towing.  Towing coming from Yakima over 12 with about 8000lb toy hauler I slowed to 45mph Naches up to white pass.  Ruts and corners made it dangerous over 55mph.  Ruts really tossed me around more than normal.  I made same trip last year with old tires and not even comparable between the two.  Its a bad road yes but jeez.  I hope this helps others to avoid these tires for heavy trucks..

Tread was gone, below serviceable limit. My wife was complaining of lots of road noise. I checked the tread and it was almost gone, I took it right to the tire shop. Just under 12k on them, and like I said that was the replacement set. He gave about 85% of my money back.

I wonder if the truck tires would have a different rubber in them?  That's not good to hear either way.
I’ve have the Falken ATW3 on my F150 for about 16k.
I bought LT tires because the size I wanted wasn’t available in P.
The tires are excellent.
No sign of wear, even after a bunch of driving on basalt.
Quiet and smooth, especially for an LT.
I run 42PSI and air down when I’m going into the mountains.
Great tire and great reviews.

I wish sidewall on Duratracs was bit thicker but traction, ride, mileage on half ton so good I keep running them as commuter / woods use.  150k miles on 4 sets.

That is only 37k average per set?
Yea I change at 40k.  Could go another 10k  but don’t go into fall with 50% tread.

I put a set of Faulken Wildpeak AT3s on my son's Jeep Wrangler Unlimited.  Hasn't seen much dirt, but in 25k they still look new.

Old post, now I'm in the market for new tires. I had a flat on Friday with OEM Goodyear's with 55K still god tread left but I ran  the flat one to long. So I'm into looking at replacing all 4 but I'm having issues with finding 18" tires. I'm looking for LT235/70R18 the best I've found is $1,050 out the door. I'm retired I really don't have that amount of cash on hand. I want to stay under about $800. Coorper/General have been my go to tire with Generals being the best on 1500 trucks. What's the HWA suggestions?

Find the tires you want on line. Find the best price you can. Call discount tire and they will price match. Apply for their card and get $50 off. Plus they usually have another rebate of $40-$50 I run 18s on my truck but they are 275s. Hancook dynapro at2. Smoothest quitest at tire Ive ever had. Love them so far with about 5000 miles on them. You may have to change your width and aspect ratio a little bit to get a better selection of tires but you should be able to stay pretty close to what you have. Call them and ask what they have or can get. You may be surprised. Ive been dealing with Pablo at the Lacey store and he has been fantastic to work with.
