Title: .222 Remington
Post by: scotsman on May 06, 2019, 09:30:04 PM: My brother in law passed away a few years ago and I have been asked to find a new owner for his rifle. When she handed it to me today I was surprised to see something I never knew existed.... a Savage bolt action in .222 Remington.

Can any of you firearm gurus tell me about it, and what its worth? The action is smooth and the bore very clean but exterior is average. Rear sight leaf is missing. How best to sell it? (besides this thread).

I took rifle loading dies a lee hand press and dipper he has loaded for it and got his start with this rifle. actually took a small black bear with his in 30-30. I buy them and refinish the stock and parkerize the metal. for a rifle in this condition with rust speckels I would say around 125 to 150 would be max. I didnt look to see where you were located but if close I would pay 125. argie1891

None of those have bids at that price level. The one on gunbroker (with bids) is going for 180.00 and that one has been rebarreled to 300 blackout.

This rifle hasnt seen light of day for many years. Certainly it isnt on any registry. So how does ffl work? My sister in law inherited it from her deceased husband. She’s ‘giving’ it to me to sell for her... I’m not keeping any of the money. Would she have to go to the ffl or what. I have sure sold / bought / traded lots of archery gear in the past few years but no firearms. Hmmm.

Post by: Tracker0721 on May 07, 2019, 05:49:05 PM: If she’s the owner she has to sign the paperwork at the FFL. If it doesn’t have a serial number they can use the description. Savage numbered everything though before it was even legally required.

Also you can mount a scope on one quite easily.

Post by: argie1891 on May 08, 2019, 11:54:16 PM: the auctions are kind of a joke on price. to find out what a firearm Is worth look at completed auctions if no one bid on it it aint worth the asking price. Many items on Gunbroker have been on there for months and some for more than a year. and then thee is the ones with reserve on the price. I will not bid on anything with a reserve. when I sell I put the least amount I will sell for and start there. so far every item I have put on auction has sold within 3 weeks. to see closed auctions you have to be registered to buy and sell. I rifle is worth what ever some one will pay for it.

They can be very accurate, hopefully the inside of the barrel is in better condition than the outside. Yes they can be scoped, I think Weaver still makes a side mount for them and you can see the screw hole in on of the pictures to mount it. B-Square also makes a side mount for it.

There isn't a lot that you can do with them other than shoot them the way they are and for the condition $150-$200 if the barrel is still good sounds about right.

I killed a lot of critters with this one. More than paid for itself when fox were a $100.

The 222 Rem. is no slouch either. It is my goto coyote hunting round, I shoot it in a model 70, and Sako Vixen for called coyotes and in a custom Savage Model 10 for varmints and targets. It is only slightly less powerful than a 223.
