Title: Back country alarm
Post by: Jpmiller on May 10, 2019, 06:39:23 AM
How do you guys make sure to wake up on time in the mornings? Is there anything other than a phone alarm? I do my best sleeping in the cold on the hard ground and I oftentimes find myself oversleeping. I have a reluctance to use my phone for unknown reasons so I'm hoping some others have some kind of tricks.

I used to use my watch but it's never loud enough. I use my phone as a camera and GPS with OnX, audio books and podcasts. I'm not leaving it in the truck as it an important tool so no reason not to use it as my alarm :twocents:

I just use my phone. I have a Google Pixle 2 XL and it will go for 4 days pretty easy on a charge when on airplane mode.

I also use a watch, but I will put it somewhere in the tent, if I wear it I have a hard time hearing it if my arm is under the pillow.  It's quiet but usually wakes me up.

I have a Rino.  It has an alarm and it will turn the unit on from a powered off state when the time comes for the alarm to go off.  Very useful!

I've been using my phone for an alarm for probably 5 years now, no different when I'm in a tent, hotel or home.

Ya, as I normally don't wear a watch (anytime of the year) I used to buy cheapo alarm watch (Timex Indiglo?) every few years and take that back in to the backcountry.  I have found that the alarm sound on those isn't very loud, so, I picked up a tiny battery powered alarm clock that seems to do the trick.  Something like this:

This might be a good alternative I'd never considered. I don't have any logical reason for it as I bring my phone for pictures but I don't like it as an alarm. I'm less opposed to it though then I am opposed to continuing to wake up to a bright sunny day.

I'm with WT1.  I don't want my phone on all night. Watch isn't loud enough. Just remember to change the time so you don't wake up in Mtn time because that is the last place you used it! Or worse, yet, in Alaskan time!

My phone wakes me up with a gnarly bugle at hunt camp, works every time.

I use my phone to set my fitbit and set it to vibrate at wake up, at 10 minutes before legal shooting and at 10 minutes before end of shooting.  It's quiet enough that I've had it go off near deer and they never heard it or reacted.  When it vibrates I know to get ready or bust a move before it's too late.

I sleep pretty crappy normally but you get me outside on the hard ground and I'm out like a light. If it's cold I sleep even better. A pair of buddies and I camped out before a walleye trip with the guide service a few months ago, it got down to around ten and I was asleep all night long in my 15* bag on one of those egg crate pads. Those two were up most of the night frozen and I slept better than I had in a long time. If they hadn't woke me up the next morning I might still be sleeping.
