when do you start picking hunckleberries. early july? i went to a spot that apparently a lot of other people went to a couple years ago and they were picked over hard, anything remotly close to the road was picked and it seemed early i dont remember the date i thnk early july, dont want to miss it this year eastern washington panhandle idaho area
-
Picked the first ones in Naches area July 8th. Picked them through the first part of August, last year was great. Ended up with about 6 gallons.
-
Reds or blues?
-
lower elevations come off early in July and the higher you climb the later they are,
I was finding slightly overripe berries into very early September in the highest patches I know.
gonna love hunting bear in Aug in higher elevation huckleberry patches
-
Reds or blues?
Mixture of both in the early season. Last batch we picked were dark purple/blue. We also picked a bunch just to eat while bear hunting in mid August. I just looked and the last time we went out in search was August 17th and we found a bunch.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190520/86b082ab1acf6659aa3ffe78cad0123e.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190520/9aae84b365ac2152238d98272faae23f.jpg)

The tiny red ones we start picking in July and the blues in August but the iron the wet side of the state. When I pick in N Idaho for blues it's mid July-August and pick at higher elevations.
-
Mid to late June is when we often start. Then follow them up the mountain this pic was June 3rd last year. Not quite there but getting closer
-
I’ve always done most picking in August around 5000 feet, west side of cascades

This thread made me go and take inventory. I've still got 8 gallons of the blues left so I might sit out a year.
-
usually August for me. Ive been using old stock to make juice. Good stuff
-
Sounds good! Just had some pie last night, boy was it good! A little vanilla ice cream really takes it up a notch.

I use old stock for juice as well. Huckleberries, corn, a little 6 row barley, sugar, yeast and water. :chuckle:
-
We do jams with most of our berries. That said I eat half the harvest while fresh.

I’m getting excited for Hucks!!!! May have to go check on some spots this weekend
-
:o Wow, seems pretty early.
-
Anybody finding ripe ones yet? I’ve seen quite a few bushes stacked with green ones. I’m thinking I’ll head out in a couple weeks to a lowland spot, I picked a bunch in the spot on July 8th last year.
-
Picked a few last Thursday checking trail cams.

My mom checked a couple spots and said it’ll be another couple weeks, still not ripe here.
-
Got berries at my early spot
-
Awesome! I’ll give it a little longer before I check my spot. Glad to hear that they are ripening up.

Cool! Last year was the first time taking our lab berry picking. Made the mistake of giving her a few berries. I’d be surprised if she didn’t try to strip the berries off every bush on the mountain! :chuckle:
-
Still pretty green in my spot this morning
-
Some good size berries this year

Huckleberry cobbler is sounding pretty damn good.

For a quickie cobbler, this stuff is excellent with hucks or peaches.

Huckleberry Bounce
don't take much and you can't feel your lips anymore, then you giggle like a little girl, and you got huckleberry stains all down the front of your shirt.

Found a few today ,Good start to the 4th
-
I think I will go check that last picture looks perfect
-
Went up around Naches today. Not many were ripe but found a few to make it worth our time. Should be good in the same spot late next week or weekend! Tons of little red huckleberries but they take too long to pick haha.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190711/c8abb8563d26c2370be5387e07b9ad8d.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190711/198c6029a4e0628a1596ccb582d675b0.jpg)

Was in a real good patch yesterday ne washington
-
Wife picked cherries today then went and picked a few hucks, at first they went too high and berries were green, then they went lower but the berries weren't very good, she's going to go to a different place next time. I guess there was a ton of bear sign in the hucks.
-
Found a lot of huckleberries but to me they look like they can wait a wee bit longer around here. Found a nice bear in one patch, little bit longer and I’ll be carrying the 30-30!
-
Pick a bunch up in the NE corner yesterday.

If anybody is hitting the Gifford, they are ripe at about 3k feet. Not ripe in the higher meadows and fields.

You all got me wanting huckleberries. Lol
-
Dang,
You guys get into them early. We don't usually expect any in the Blues until late July or early August. One of my youngest son's favorite things to do. Will be made better this year by the ability to hunt bear while we're doing it
-
I was picking some in North Idaho early this week, still a bit early where I was at, they were a little tart yet.
-
Where i was up at 4k feet yesterday the mountain was absolutely covered in big ripe berries, bumper crop this year. Unfortunately i didnt have anything to put them in except my mouth.
-

-
The weather has been perfect.... bumper crops!

Picked yesterday in my Idaho honey hole bumper crop for sure this year

Berries are so plentiful this year, i hope it doesnt make the bears disinterested in distress calls. Youd think even with unlimited berries they should still want some easy meat.
-
USFS was on the local radio this morning reminding people that you can only pick up to 3 gallons on national forest lands unless you get a commercial permit to pick more.

Is that per day? Picking more than 3 gallons in a day sounds pretty ambitious.
-
I didn't catch id=f that was per day or total off USFS, also there are plenty of places to pick that aren't USFS.

could be interesting. we had a bait full of good stuff like hostess fruit pies and meat in an area loaded with huckleberries and the bears could hardly care less about the bait. We decided we should take the easy route and just to shoot one out of the huckleberry brush :chuckle: It was a unit open till end of july and the huckleberries were crazy that year. I think they will come to calls though if for nothing but curiosity.

I rarely pick more than a gallon a day maybe gallon and a half if count what I eat. Some times it takes a few hours some time most the day but once I got a gallon I’m ready to go. Huckleberry rakes suck!!!!!! Sure it’s faster but then you gotta clean all the stinking leaves out of them. Least hand picked I only take the ripe ones. Never used a rake my self but went picking with a friend that used one. His bag was twice mine but by the time he cleaned it up I had more. With the good technique a person could pick 3 gallons a day if they could keep from filling their gut. We often call it quits with 3-5 gallons in the freezer. That lasts us the year even with jam gifts. We never sell
-
Think im going to get up in the morning and go stock up on some more. Got to get while the gettins good
-
Had a great day in the mountains. Lots of berries, picked a gallon on Chinook pass.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190730/a73726db14d564d7f7abe88fa84d515d.jpg)

I don't remember a year when the berries were as good as this year.
-
Huckleberries are doing awesome this year, but has anybody else noticed that the service berries are doing terrible? Im finding service berries in some areas, not many, but a lot of places none of the service berry bushes are growing squat.
-
What is a service berry????
-
What is a service berry????
Really? Theyre more common than huckleberries. Not nearly as good, but it seems to me that bears are more into service berries than huckleberries.
-
Never heard of a service berry, it looks just like a huckleberry. Now I sound like that girl on willy Wonka, snozz berry, who every heard of a snozz berry!! :chuckle:
-

I pulled that pic off the web. When you see them in person, theyre obviously not hucks. And the bushes grow way bigger too. Commonly head high, some can get like small trees, 12'+.
-
Theyre edible, but not nearly as good as hucks. Seedy, and to me they kind of taste like sweet peas. Natives used them in pemmican. Theyre not worth going out and gathering like hucks are, but ive been known to eat a few handfuls if im hiking around all day and want a snack, and there are no hucks around.
Some of the areas i was thinking about hunting bears this month, the service berries arent hardly producing at all, so the bears arent there. But my plan a area has a ton of hucks, so its still a go there.

berries I hunt that I always thought were service berries dont look like those. huge clusters of dark purple, look like hawthorn berries. bears love them whatever they are and they are ripe now

Indians also dry them and put them in stews. Again, not real tasty. Almost more like a vegetable than a fruit. I am sure they've got all kinds of nutritional value, but no fun to eat... Survival Food :P
-
Army Survival Berry Edibility "Rule of Thumb":
If it's Blue or Black-its edible
If it's Red - only eat it if you know what it is
If it's White - Never edible
If it's green or pink - It's not ripe. You can eat a little if you know what it is, but too much and you'll get diarrhea
:twocents:

Big service berry bush i just came across. Like most of them this year in a lot of my areas, its hardly producing any berries.
You can see my backpack at the base of this sucker to give you an idea of its size. Theyre not all this big but still, cant mistake it for a huckleberry bush.
-
Not bad for 5 people and a 30 minute lunch break.
-
Wow, Naches Sportsman, my mouth is watering just looking at that haul! I gotta go find some berries, there's a ton of pancakes calling out for hucks... Not to mention a few pie crusts...
I never seem to find them though, they're like my unicorn. By the time I find a patch it's been picked clean or it's a bad year and there just aren't any. Anybody know where I can buy a gallon? :)
-
One of the few things that I miss about the Vail permit is my huckleberry spot. It’s only an hour drive but instead I have to go to my other spot in Idaho. Looks like I missed a banner year this year. Next summer I’ll head East and restock.
-
Why not buy another pass?
-
This is the only huckleberry I've ever known. You'd have to pick a million of them to make anything usefull.
-
Had better luck with the huckleberries yesterday than we did with hucklebears. Little Pathfinder and I got about a gallon.
-
Today's lunch spot 8)
-
Why not buy another pass?
Because other than the huckleberries, Vail sucks! Won't buy another Weyco permit until they do something about the rampant poaching by permit holders and brush pickers.
-
How about some processed ones? :chuckle: :chuckle:
-
Thats proccessed something alright, but i dont know what. This is proccessed huckleberries

Actually a lot of service berries is more likely i guess. Those suckers are seedy, and ive never found hawthorne on this mtn.
-
Found some in SW WA at 4000' yesterday. Still a lot to come. Salmonberries were loaded. Topped off the huckleberry buckets. Will have to check the hawthorns when get back to Kelly Hill.

they are so similar it’s hard to say. Majority of the service berries I find are in the hawthorn patches. I can tell you those areas are a nightmare to recover bear in. They crawl in deep in the tunnels of 1-2” spikes.
-
We found a pile of ripe huckleberries last week around 5200 ft. Stuffed myself with them on a lunch break! Wish I had a way to pick more to bring back, but I had elk on my mind!

are all the hucks gone?
