Took the father in law out fishing this weekend while he’s up from Comifornia. He caught a huge fish and before we could get a picture he wiggles out of his hands. Probably why he was so big. Anyway I ended up catching this guy and couldn’t find anything that resembles him in the WDWF book picture wise.

Bull trout.
-
...or Dolly Varden. Either way you can't keep them.
-
Dog Lake on White pass?
-
Looks like a dolly to me.

Old Dog, I agree. Back in the day in NW MT, we called em "Dollies" but over the years, they started classifying them as two different fish (Dolly Varden and Bull Trout). And yes, you can keep them in some areas in WA as part of your daily fish catch limit IAW the WDFW Fish Regs. Been years since I ate them but remember they weren't that good ;)

Looks like a Lake Trout to me, but I'll defer to the experts here who say bull or dolly.
-
thats a lake trout..

I think you should be more assertive.... :chuckle:
Its a Lake Trout.
-

No, that's a Mackinaw :chuckle:
-
:yeah: True!
-
Probably a lake trout, you could be sure if the tail was shown. Lakers have a deep fork and bulls don't. Otherwise, I think they look very similar.
-
To add some info to this great thread:
"Bull trout (scientific name: Salvelinus confluentus), like their cousins, the lake trout and brook trout, are not considered trout at all. Along with the Dolly Varden (and of course Arctic char), they are members of the char family. For years people believed that the bull trout was just a localized version of Dolly Varden, but it is now accepted that they are two different species."
-
Ok its a lake char... lol

No, that's a Mackinaw :chuckle:
Don't you mean Mackinac :chuckle:

Bull trout is likely.
As Stein mentioned, need to see the top fin or tail for a definitive i.d. Looks like it was caught off the shore. Lakers are a deep water fish except when spawning.

Not always true. Its actually very common to target lake trout in 20 ft of water when the water is cold.
-
I'd say dolly. Looks to have the big mouth like all the Dolly's I've caught.
-
100% Lake Trout. Not a Dolly or Bull Trout. They are similar looking, but very different spotting pattern and tails.
-
Yellow Rooster Tail catches anything trouty.
-
Come on, tell the poor guy the truth. Baby sturgeon!! 8)

-
Yes , great question. Will answer .
-
I see spots on the fins.

I’ll settle this. It’s a Lakecharbulldollymackytrout. There :chuckle:
-
First I've hear of that species. Would it then qualify for the record books ? :chuckle:

Shhhhhh. Geez Gaddy, first you tell somebody, they tell somebody else, and it’ll be a free for all for Lakecharbulldollymackytrout... Chaos man, chaos.
-
My bad ( did I just say that ? I hate that excuse ) You would think after all my decades of fishing I would have learned to keep my mouth shut :bash:
-
It’s just a house cat guys. Relax.

No always true. I've caught a few Lakers from shore about this time of year and in fall

It's a lake trout. For realsies.
-
Looks like a Lake Trout/Mackinaw to me too. At Lake Pend Oreille they get pretty big, I think the record is something around 40+lbs. Not sure if Idaho Fish and Game still have a bounty on them or not, but they used to pay you $15 for every Mackinaw fish head you turned in.

TIGER TROUT :chuckle:TROUSER TROUT :dunno:

TIGER TROUT :chuckle:TROUSER TROUT :dunno:
