I can’t apply for antlered deer because I drew last year and with my gov tag to hunt on this year, I just decided to skip the draw this year. First year in about 20 that I am not applying in Idaho.

You can always look at the tag quotas before buying the tag to decide if you want to go through that hassle. If where you're looking at has a limited quota of OTC tags and not many left, you'd better buy now. If you're backup plan falls under the "All Other Zones" category you're pretty safe waiting to see the draw results before buying the OTC tag. There are units that are draw only for one weapon and OTC for others. So if you're not loyal to the weapon you hunt with it can simplify planning to just when you're going, getting rid of where or if you're going.:yeah: you can only hold a limited entry tag as a first tag so if you buy a tag before the draw and you end up being successful in the draws you'd have to exchange your tag for the LE tag. I figure I will draw this year since I finally drew 2 quality tags in the same year after waiting 21 years in this state. why not make it more crazyCareful what you wish for. Most years I go into the draw not really caring because I'm going to the unit I love anyway. Last year I with a new baby and such I went in thinking drawing my rifle elk tag would save me a whole lot of prep time during the summer. The one year it'd make a difference I actually drew it.

In 2012, I drew 45 deer and 45 elk. I remember the site had crashed and I called in for my results. The nice lady at F&G said "let me look you up" followed by "oh my!" It was a good day.
Did you ever try to figure the odds of that happening? Had to be literally millions to one as an out-of-stater...

Deer tags are in the game tags section. If your on your phone you have to close the yellow window to see it.
Done it on my phone and on desktop, elk, bear, turkey, etc is available to purchase, nothing for deer.

Correct - but they absolutely have taken away the ability to purchase a deer tag from some folks via their online license system. I'm one of them...and I just happen to have put in for a nearly 100% draw deer tag. Not saying it means anything, but all my family still show the ability to purchase deer tags...I do not. I'm extremely familiar with IDFG license system...its not a case of looking in the wrong spot...but I don't know that it really means anything...could just be a coincidence/glitch...or maybe they are slowly taking away my tag purchase options as I keep logging in to check for results :chuckle:

The best chance I had was 10% as a non-res, I doubt this is a backdoor.
Probably similar to when WDFW took down Points page, they are probably getting ready to do something and sporadically shutting everyone's tag down. I bet at some point, everyone's deer tag that put in for the controlled hunt will go away. Then come back on after posted.
If the same holds true for elk, A and B tag tabs should also be shutting down soon.

Well heck, my son drew the unit 18 rifle mule deer tag. Woohoo! Throw in the fact that he drew the Snake River rifle buck tag in OR, he has both shores of Hells Canyon covered. Looks like I’ll be sending my MT combo license back for a refund. I don’t have my bull permit in MT this year, so it doesn’t sting nearly as bad!keep us posted on that 18 hunt, I saw a very nice buck in there years ago when I had that elk tag, good luck! It’s beautiful backcountry if you guys hunt there.

Well heck, my son drew the unit 18 rifle mule deer tag. Woohoo! Throw in the fact that he drew the Snake River rifle buck tag in OR, he has both shores of Hells Canyon covered. Looks like I’ll be sending my MT combo license back for a refund. I don’t have my bull permit in MT this year, so it doesn’t sting nearly as bad!keep us posted on that 18 hunt, I saw a very nice buck in there years ago when I had that elk tag, good luck! It’s beautiful backcountry if you guys hunt there.
18 is no where it once was just 5 years ago.This was the first time we didnt apply in 18 this year and found a different unit. After having the tag and hunting it in 2017 I wont be back till deer numbers come up. A buddy had it last year and said the same thing hes done applying there till it rebounds.
