Well, who made it out this weekend? How was it???
-
nobody made it out huh :dunno:
-
Someone did according to the creel reports. Looks like folks are hooking into the residents.
-
Hit quick limits yesterday in the morning across from Shilshole in MA 10. I usually fish MA 11 and I'm still pissed that WDFW waited until 4am on 5/31 to post the closure for MA 11. I bought my license in April not realizing that the MA 11 season would be a month shorter, with less dates you can fish and a smaller catch quota. Not to mention the increase in fees this year and wdfw cutting services. They should cut staff instead
-
My dad and I fished Jeff Head Monday morning. We caught out limits in about 45 minutes.

Any particular time a guy needs to be out there to get them? Tide change, early morning etc... My dad is doing better after his cancer surgery so I think it’s time to get him out after something.
-
look for riptides. They're feeding on Krill which gets congregated in the rips. before 9am is best. My buddy guides at Jeff Head and finds them in the late morning and afternoon as well but less. Troll around until you find them. When you get bit or hook into one, circle around because they're schooled.
-
Downsize you lures and troll fast. We caught all our fish on a green and white glow needlefish ace hi fly 20 inches behind an 8 inch flasher with a drop of herring oil on the head of the fly. GPS trolling speed was around 3.5 MPH, fishing 40 feet deep.
-
Holy smokes, just checked weekend tides. If anyone wants a few laughs just show up at the Everett launch around low.

Finally got out there this morning. Quick 4 fish limit but the fish are small (as usual for this time of year). 60 to 75 feet down, Coho Killers & flasher. They aren't picky.
Saw a Humpback whale just North of the Edmond's ferry. Good 1st trip of the season.
-
He's doing well.

:chuckle: Cool picture!!

Sunday was probably the best day on the water I can remember. We had a leisurely 6:45 launch to see about 5 fat *censored* seals on the Everett dock. Run to Jeff was very decent save a few monster rollers due to the 12' tide change. Fishing was great, we caught the very tail end of the morning bite and practiced all sort of catch and release to get that out of our system before the main seasons open. Water was great, weather perfect.
After we lost patience, we motored into Kingston for lunch, ice cream and a nice rest before running back to Muk for some anchored flounder fishing. The kids reeled them in until they got bored and back home for ribeye on the grill and coho in the fridge for the week.
I was amazed at the color of the meat, they look more like sockeye than coho, should eat great.
We were catching them on everything, coho killers, hoochie, regular flashers, blinky flashers, purple, green, etc. Shallowest was 15 pulls on a diver and deepest was 65' later in the bite and everywhere in between.

HOT HOT HOT! Get out there guys!
-
Man, we ate another one tonight. Those little guys are fatty and amazingly tasty. I’ll be out again soon to load up. They are up there with any fish I have ever eaten.

ill be out next week at some point
-
Will be out there Sunday. Blue duckworth hard top
-
Last time I was out I got boarded by WDFW. They checked pretty much everything; hooks, documents, PFDs, fire extinguisher, sound making device, etc. They had several confiscated fish on their deck so somebody wasn't playing by the rules. I was mostly legal, just lacking a type 4 PFD. They were cool about that.
Pinch your barbs!
I may get out tomorrow; new type 4 and all.
-
I will be launching at Shilshole around 5am I think. 17' Arima Seachaser
-
I wimped out; too snotty out there for me this morning.
-
I'll likely hit it sometime this weekend. Have you guys been mainly fishing the east side or west side of MA10? Or has it mattered?

I think the consensus is Jeff Head
-
Last year, for me, white coho killer was the ticket.

That's what I figured. Seems like the residents are always thick over there.
-
Jeff Head for me today. Along the NE shelf. About 250-300 feet of water at 85 on the line. Hot from 615 to 645 then they moved off and couldn't find them before we left for work at 8.
White Needle fish skirt with purple haze flasher and herring strip.
Fish being caught here and there by other boats. Most other boats were in 600+ feet near south tip.
-
We have found them shallower as well, crank it up to 3.5 mph, cover ground and trust your graph.

Anyone ever do any good out there in the evening?

Yes.
-
I was out there this morning. I fished out near Jeff Head, my 2 friends bailed on me last minute and I went anyway. Solo trying to control the boat, fight the fish and then net it was a comedy show. I hooked about 12 or 15 to be able to get my limit of 2 in the boat. One really nice one and one avg resident coho. I am kind of busy until next Friday but hope to hit it again then.
-
Went this morning, it was good. Nice to shake the rust off.
-
Tried to go out this morning, friends boat didn’t start at the launch. Just glad we weren’t out on the water when the starter went out!

Well that stinks. All geared up and a no go at the launch. Hope it is something simple to fix.

Sorry to hear! Hope you guys get back out soon!

Same result for us again as Friday. Caught the 30 to 45 minute bite around 630 to 7, then left. 3 into the boat. Couple more lost.
Little deeper water today, 65 to 80.
What 2 downrigger strategies do you guys run? You set 1 at a different depth with different gear, then once you find a depth and gear that seems to be working switch both to the same depth and gear? Or always keep something different.
-
I am a hoochie and spoon guy, occasionally run a plug. For coho I just run them where I see the bait. For kings I am dragging bottom unless I am fishing deep water, then rarely no more than 210 feet of wire out no matter how deep the water is.
-
We picked up 4 this morning before 8:00. On the smaller side but look tasty ;)

Ideally, my wife is running the boat and I'm running the gear. She is great about magically driving over coho and keeps an eye on the graph for fish and bait. We'll start out at 30' & 55' on the rigger and a bonus rod off the back with a diver probably 15-20'. From there, I adjust based on where we are getting hit or where we are seeing the majority of the fish on the graph.
This is the one fishery I have 100% confidence on moving to the depths I see fish on the graph. Most of the time, if we pull something through fish marks on the graph we get hit.
Late in the morning, 55' seemed to be the best depth.
I will only fish the same combination of gear and/or depths if that is out producing like 3:1 or better.
Gear doesn't seem to matter much for this fishery although we did slightly better with coho killers than squid and you don't have to bait.
Like any fishery, one combination, rod or certain spot on the boat will do better for some unknown reason. Make sure that one is fishing 99% of the time.
-
Thanks for the insight Stein. Working on my greenhorn card still, but making progress!
-
Made it out this afternoon. Got to Jeff head about 1:30, fished until 3:30. Landed several, kept 4, headed to Kingston for an early dinner.
-
I was out there 10 hours yesterday. Caught them early, middle and late. Ace hi fly, oil flasher at 70 feet down and 2.25-2.75 dependent on current.
We caught ours deep
-
The bite has cooled down a bit. Just a bit. Had to work a bit this morning to find fish.

50 to 65'

Is this still happening?
-
I went today. Saw very few coho, and none in the box for us. My kid did release a nice king and lost another, both at coho depths with coho gear, so at least that was promising.
-
Fish lady said no action this am but we came back in with crab by 930.
-
Down south the fishing has been really good. Kings are bigger this year than normal.

was out for the afternoon tide in 11 yesterday...was SLOW..didnt see any nets flying.
only 1 undersized and lots of dogs for us.
-
We hooked 9 landed 3 Monday It has slowed a lot
-
My kid and I got into them on Sunday around the am low tide change. They were deep - once we found them it was quick limits.
-
What part of 10 were you at?
John's facebook page is loaded with nice bubble nooks, I'm thinking about hitting that this weekend.
-
With the way fishing is headed in the NW is it even worth it to buy a boat?
-

Jeff Head area.

You just have to define what you're going after. Steelheading was a great fishery once - then everyone got into it. Salmon was great once - then everyone got into it.
I'm sure MA10 will suck again at some point.
Perch is an unlimited fishery.
Crappie are doing wonderfully.
You can make money back on squawfish
Plenty of good walleye fisheries
Great bass fishing around the state
Stocker trout if that's your thing
Mackinaw and Kokes in Chelan
Big bows in Roosevelt
Oh yeah, and we also have salmon and steelhead.
-
There are and will be many salmon fisheries too, you just have to be flexible. Whether it's netting, orcas, ocean conditions, river conditions, too much rain, not enough rain, water too warm, low oxygen levels, low expected returns to X or Y river, etc., the only constant is fisheries are always changing, and they have been for as long as I can remember. And I can remember about 40 years' worth of WA salmon fishing. On the whole, things are actually pretty good right now - they just may not be in the particular spot you would prefer to fish.
-

You just have to define what you're going after.
CR, Westport/Ilwaco, Sound salmon, crab, shrimp. Halibut, rock fish off the coast.
Looking at a used NR Seahawk, just don't like a lot of what I'm hearing about reduced limits, seasons, or closures.

This is a great state! If you are flexible and willing to trailer your boat you can chase something every day of the year. I’d add carp shooting, and shad on the Columbia to ctwiggs1’s list.
-
You can use a boat a lot more than a hunting rifle in this state.

me personally? Shoot...im probably going to sell my 17'6 north river after this season :sry:
so i can buy a bigger north river :chuckle:
see you guys on the water BRIGHT AND EARLY next Thursday :IBCOOL:
-
Anybody getting after it in area 10 recently? Might go on a friend’s boat on Sunday.
-
Chelan Falls needs a few more boats.
-
Not fishing around Shilshole for a couple weeks, for sure, after the sewage dump this week.
-
Hit area 10 yesterday for a quick am trip. Lots of life out there, but only two coho worth keeping for us. Still pretty good for this time of year.
