-
Keeping my fingers crossed. Here is my Selkirk bull from last year
-
I just really hope I draw one before I die.

I just really hope I draw one before I die.
I just hope someone I hunt with draws one before I die.
-
I was fortunate enough to draw a moose tag last year so I don't expect to draw either of the other oil tags in my lifetime. Although I'm really hoping for a sheep tag... 😂😆(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190608/1e9d72f0a0e33d9ed9df471c1ca1b5f6.jpg)

Exactly this!

I’ll keep the motivational speaker photos coming. I got my goat tag, much to my shock, in 2017. Hoping someone I know draws one this year as it’s kind of addicting and I can’t wait to go goat hunting again. Really I want the woodchuck to draw his moose tag this year.

I cant imagine drawing an OIL tag - our group has been trying for 15-20 years and havent drawn yet - must be awesome when or if it finally happens.
-
Those goat and moose pictures are so awesome - congrats guys
-
Jackelope’s goat hunt thread was about as good as it gets!

Last year was my first Oil Tag. I’m 53 and have been applying faithfully. Don’t give up hope.

Keep the OIL trophy pics coming!!! No such thing as too much hype when we're all waiting for the draws....99% of the fun is the anticipation (and since we may never draw in our lifetimes, if you don't enjoy the anticipation, what's the point at all?).
Awesome trophies. Thanks for sharing them!

No but the moose and ram could of been shoot archery. The goat no way 😜

No, I shot mine with my 300 WSM. I did have my bow in the truck with me but when I made a move on him it look like it was going to be a lot further away and I was Out by myself that day and I really didn’t want to pack both.. I ended up shooting him broadside high shoulder/double lung at 40 yards so definitely would’ve been an easy shot with my bow. If I could’ve held steady enough to shoot that is. It was pretty intense him coming in raking trees, he saw me and came closer eyes bugged out of his head swaying back and forth ready to either fight or make love to me, luckily I didn’t find out which.

Rainier10 could have shot mine with his bow a couple different times. I was 100 or so yards away waiting for him to show himself though.

I realize this isn't a true OIL tag but this hunt was a blast! Still waiting to get her back from the taxidermist. Hopefully this will be my year to get a Ram tag so my ewe won't be alone on the pedestal 🙂🤞(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190610/2e6038222dcfce588d3dbde70e82e7b6.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20190610/3a030be30bff2220fc298323b8cac665.jpg)

North South East West doesn't matter. As I remember, it's a B&C all timer.

Yeah, theres a chance, otherwise i wouldnt put in, but lets just say im not practicing my moose calling in anticipation.

We'd have better odds if we were limited to one OIL choice per year.

I do my part in that. I dont apply for sheep or goat. It just doesnt interest me. I also dont apply for any quality permits.

My hunting partner drew his 49 moose tag with 7 two years ago

I feel like with the OIL permits 1 point or max points your odds are relatively the same.

with the sheer numbers of applicants for the OIL tags points mean nothing in WA when you have thousands with 1-6 points and lots with 15 plus everyone has a chance

or a lot of us with 20 plus,

Yes, everyone does have a chance but it's wrong to say points mean nothing. Just look at the average points of people who drew tags. For bull moose, right out of the pamphlet, here are the averages: 17, 12, 13, 13, 16, 15, 16, 16, 16, 14, 10, 16, 14, and 17.

My understanding is that the avg points shown in the pamphlet arent avg points of those who drew, but avg points of all applicants

No, it's "average winner points." If you look online you'll see that's what they call it there. And you can verify by looking at the pdf's that list the points of all who drew.

You are correct, it makes odds quite a bit higher if you have more points because points are squared.

Guy with 26 points draws and a guy with 1 point draws. That would be 13 points average. But not really telling the whole story. When there are very few tags average points don't mean anything. They should use mean instead.

Yes, I understand what you're saying, but if you look at the actual numbers, very few people draw moose, sheep, and goat tags with less than, say, 10 points. You'll see a lot more people selected with 15 points and up, even though the number of applicants with those higher point totals are much less. So the points certainly make a difference. Just think, 23 points gives a person 529 chances while 5 points only 25 chances.
-
Dont worry about the odds. Send out good vibes by taking the Mountain Goat Gender Identification Test
-
The way Washington's draw process works makes points pretty much useless. For instance Swakane Ram tag, 20 points = .09% chance to draw - 1 point = less than .001% chance to draw. So 20 years of applying gets you a .09% greater chance to draw than a person that applied for their first time ever.

You get a 90x greater change to draw then the first time applying... but your odds are still garbage at .09%

Working on some other things/visuals but here is a broad distribution of who got drawn.
Antlered Moose Draw Distribution (Total):
104 total permits:
0-5 points = 3 selected
6-10 points = 9 selected
11-15 points = 39 selected
16-20 points = 42 selected
21-25 points = 7 selected
49 Degrees North has the most telling information of who is applying with 10456 applicants for that hunt #8006, (I can't differentiate obviously hunt choice multiple picks):
