been a long time since I’ve been in this unit . My dad use to take me over every year to chase Muleys as a teen. Now to start researching
-
CONGRATS!!
-
Very nice congrats
-
Our group has hunted Alta a few times the last 5 years - and done pretty decent in general but always wanted that Quality late tag - congrats 🍻
-
Congrats! My partner and I drew Pearrygin! :IBCOOL:
-
Bugger. Those were my 2 choices in that order too.
-
Buddy had it last year hunted hard never saw a good buck lots and lots of 2 points! Hope your luck is better!!
-
Congrats on the tag. It isn’t what it once was! Should have fun though. Wouldn’t waste my time around lookout. Wolves are running outta control again.
-
I dont think there is much in this state that is better today than 15 years ago :bash: Carrying a rifle in the mule deer rut in a historical great genetic area is all I need to is have an opportunity to be out there, never know what you will stumble upon that time of year.
-
Well I personally wouldn't have wasted anything more than 2 points on an Alta permit and even then would have ate the tag but that's just me. I know this area very well an it is a crying shame it has dropped off so much but that has been stated thru many threads. I will be there again this weekend, it's a good thing the area has so much beauty otherwise it might be even more depressing. :twocents: But don't let me piss on your parade. Best of luck to you.
-
One option for this tag is to hunt low in November and look for a nice whitetail...the mule deer are hurting here but the whitetails are doing good, just mostly on private land.

At least you know your going to fill your tag, there's some bruiser 2 points in there.

Unless he used 2 points or less sounds like you've pissed on his parade. :hello:

Nah. Sky was just very blunt about the truth. Huntwa is thick skinned and will do that tag as much justice as any other hunter. The saddest part is, nonsense in waiting til herds improve, because they are not going to.
-

Thats a fact. Im sure Shane knows what he is in for and will put the work in. There is still a chance at a monster muley or whitetail but most of all, there isnt a better time to be in Gods country.
-
I agree if someone is going to find a good buck in there huntnnw can, best of luck!
-
I don’t call it wasting points for any deer hunt In WA. It’s my resident state and cost me a couple dollars a year to apply. I’m hunting general mule deer in October already , but now I get to go out in November with 18 other hunters there’s a quality experience right there :chuckle:. Not holding out for a 180” buck .I’m looking for a mature buck and if it’s a big 3 or 3x2 so be it, I will hunt my ass off as I’ll will be there for almost all season depending on ID’s draw results.
Also with the Whitetails it better friggin big like 170 plus to get me excited about shooting one. I started this endeavor of mine to kill a big Muley a few years ago and have given up whitetail hunting till I kill a giant.
-
Congratulations, that's going to be a great hunt! Can't wait to see some pictures
-
Hunting the rut is fun. Period. You could see a giant any minute and the opportunity to hunt during that time is awesome.
-
I’ve got someone very knowledgeable with unit helping me and has sent me various trailcam pics of bucks that were alive this year that I’d have 0 problem shooting. Plus 5 very big bucks all bigger than anything I’ve killed.
-
Something about there every weekend and not wanting the premium tag in the unit doesn't add up for me but I'm slow like that.
Have a great time.
-
I’d never bet against Shane! Guy knows how to get it done.
-
well its getting closer to hunt. I will try and post pics and updates on here. I dont know what kind of service I will have. I have 17 days to hunt, so Ill be holding out till the end. I have had some pics sent to me of some great bucks from someone helping on the hunt.
-
I suspect that you are gonna have an EPIC hunt.
Go get 'em!
-
Tagging. Hope you bag a big one
-
Good luck Shane!
-
great weather
-
hoping for worse weather tho, lately been very mild over there. Looking at low 50's and dry this weekend
-
I have two friends that drew the Alta tag. They will be over there from the 8th on or until they fill their tags. Should be some nice ones in that unit.
-
oh nice! Ill be over for 1-3 and then back over the 7th to the 20th
-
I have a place across the river (in the Chill) about 9 miles up. Stop by for a cup of coffee if you'd like.
RW
-
Couple days in and been more of a scouting trip trying to find groups of does to start checking next week. No shortage of deer spotted in a day and half. 7 different bucks nothing that’s got me excited , little bucks with all doe groups chasing and fighting for each other. I think things will begin to change in the next 5 days .
-
It should be warming up for you!
Good luck
-
The 10th has been when it really kicks into high gear in my experience. Your footwork will be valuable. Keep track of those does and you’ll be in high cotton buddy!
-
Already seeing Manson permit guys out
-
Last night took me to a new area I glassed up a lone 3x4, 2 groups of does and one group had a small buck . Heard 2 bucks fighting , but could never glass them up. About 10 min of light I’m hiking back to truck and coyotes are going nuts and they sound like they are by my truck . I hurry to truck dump pack they are in draw just over from truck . I sneak over spot one at 374 dead yote. Getting ready to leave and 2 more start howling . Spot another and he’s 369 boom. 2 dead yotes. Good practice :chuckle:
-
Nice! Way to capitalize on a good opportunity and save some fawns!
-
Headed home for 4 days of work then back for rest of season. Not getting the weather next week might find me hunting much higher.
-
Awesome looking country! Good luck buddy!
-
Beautiful country. Best of luck.
-
Well don't feel bad the Manson hunters I talked to are in the same boat
-
tagging I want to follow along on this one.

-
Good luck
-
Awesome pics! Well done on the coyotes too ! Practice is practice! Hope you find a big beast of a buck next week!!
-
Hopefully you will get some snow. 😊 Great country. PB
-
everyday I check the weather it gets worse for me, Its not looking real good for much snow
-
saw a really nice 3x4 with 6 doe's right at the forest service sign. (the first cattle guard). was up helping get fire wood sunday mid day. he never left his doe's. if i would guess he is low 20's wide and uper teens tall. no eye guards. when we were coming down we saw 5 white tails in the bottom just across from the house being remolded and for sale. i believe it the first house on your right just as you get to dirt road. they walked right over to BLM land. there is a huge white tail buck with those 4 doe's. good luck. the weather system we were to have this week now has been pushed to early next week. i have a feeling though the rut is just starting to get hot so hopefully you start seeing bigger bucks with the doe's.
-
Go high and you will succeed
-
Good luck, hope you can find a good one!
-
Several have reached out on here with a ton of info  couple more days and Ill be back
-
Good Luck out there
-
Tag, hoping to draw this hunt one of these days.
-
Pearrygin was starting to get pretty hot today and yesterday.
-
Worked a graveyard last night got off work and made it up here at 2pm. Made a climb to a point to glass and glassed up more deer than I could count and only glassed 50% of the hill side. Turned up what would be my best Muley , but it’s not big enough this early . Super heavy 4x4 with great forks and fronts, just narrow 24” ish. If he was 27” + I’d dumped him. Guessing 165” ish. Long ways with low light and bad back drop. Be back in am to see if I can see him better . Thought I saw a extra on him.
-
Fantastic, getting fun now! Keep coming with the updates.
-
Great to hear!! Good luck man!!!
-
Found buck. He’s got a sticker on one of his forks . Going to get closer to make a decision.

Awesome! Hopefully he is what you’re looking for.
-
Looks good
-
Now this up to date info on the hunt. Thanks for bringing us along.
-
That gets me excited.
-
Well he’s good enough for me, plus several guys who spend tons of time here said they would take him on this tag. Making a play now he’s bedded in a terrible spot to move. Wide open. I’m at 600 yards now. 7x5 including brows. Got a bladed g4 on end of beam plus a sticker off fork 2-3” long.
-
Sweet, good luck!
-
Dang that’s a dandy
There goes my work day
Thank you for the Friday excitement
-
Be patient....get set up and wait him out for a clean shot. Good luck.

-
Pretty Buck, good luck with the stalk.
-
Not many of his caliber roaming that valley anymore, good luck on the sneak.
-
Had this tag in 2011, hunted later than this with some good snow and never saw a buck as nice as the one just posted. Good luck!
-
Reminds me of watching a football game and the announcers saying this guy hasn’t missed a fg all year. Hope you didn’t jinx yourself!
-
Video of shot through phone scope please.
-
That's a dandy in any of the 200s quality buck units.
-
Good luck, get him!
-
I’m now lounging in the sun waiting on him to stand. I’m at 200. See a antler
-
Feels like I am right there. Love the real time updates.

Soak it up. That's a whopper laying out there, I wouldn't pass him no matter what the tag was. He'll be up for his 1:00 stretch and doe check here in a few. Good luck.
-
Be sure he’s the one you want, might be a bigger one coming over the hill
-
The pressure
The intensity

Little bit more about hunt as I am home now. After sitting on him waiting for him to stand I had my video cam filming and trying to do both. 2 new does showed up and he jumped to his feet and starts chasing them around . I think I clicked safety off 3-4 times always stopping just behind brush. He then chases a doe up a steep ,but shallow canyon and outta sight. The 3 does I could see have now also followed into canyon outta sight. Ugh! Instead of waiting and hoping they reappear I decided to pack up my stuff and sneak over to the edge of the canyon and knew this was going to be close. Wind was perfect I get to 20 yards drop pack and leave my vid camera as I am not screwing with it at this point . There is a rock bluff I wanna sneak up to peer into this canyon which is only 100 yards wide. As I am inching up I spot a doe feeding at 70 yards ! I hear another straight below . This bluff has a 100’ drop off. I try looking down to see if it’s him, can’t see a deer. I look back up at feeding doe and there he is coming up behind her at 70 yards. 1 shot behind the shoulder and he ran 50 yards. Had a super easy pack out , about as flat and down hill as it could be for 3 mi. I’d like to thank several people on here for reaching out throttlejockey20,jjhunter,zwickeyman and days before I left emskou reached out to get ahold of his buddy who had the tag in 16. I woulda never hunted this spot without his info. Few pics from hunt.
This pic is where I spotted him
-
A couple when I moved to 600 or so yards from spotter.
-
When I set up at 200 yards
-
Where I shot from, he was off to right straight below
-
Walking down ridgeline where I first saw him

Great story and buck, congrats!
-
Some video before I had to move. Can hear safety going on and off 😂 trying to film and shoot is tough.
-
Congratulations on a Really Nice Buck! Thanks for sharing... that just gets your heart pumping.
-
Awesome
-
Great deer, congrats and thanks for sharing!!
-
Fantastic, thanks for including us all!
-
Great buck, Shane. Congrats and thanks for taking us along. Really cool thread.
-
Great buck Shane! Congrats man!
-
Nice buck. thanks for sharing your adventure. Way to go on self filming the shot.
-
Congrats on the buck. Hoping that next year there will be no late tags or doe tags given out in this unit. Its a shame that the state only is concerned about $ in a unit hurting so much.
-
More like no general mule deer hunts ! Or highly regulated. I have been all for state wide permit only mule deer seasons for years! 18 late tags is nothing compared to general season slaughter fest .That’s the problem. I saw no shortage of does. They are producing fawns and 1-3 yr old Muleys are about the dumbest animal in the woods. Add in massive burns and there is no hope of survival of legal bucks. I’d be willing to bet on public lands a legal buck under the age of 3 has 1-2% survival rate . Reason I saw 10-15 spike or forks as people waded thru them during general season to shoot a more genetically blessed deer. Don’t get me started on 3 pt min and the joke that is on mule deer herds.

Congrats on a great buck.

Any success this weekend with the fog moving in??
-
Wow that's a stud Shane, pretty much has everything you could want in a Muley.. did you put a tape on him yet? How many times did you see him, looks like you passed on him the day before? Fantastic buck man..

Congrats on a cool looking buck.

Saw him night before , not enough light to get any closer. Next day had me getting closer to see him better. I green scored him just under 180” with a 18 1/8” inside spread :chuckle:
-
Sweet buck! Did you end up getting the shot on film!? Am I missing it?
-
No. I had to move and it was going to be a close shot and wasn’t messing with camera at that point as it already cost me a couple opportunities
-
Awesome buck man
-
Awesome Buck!!!
-

-
