Title: 2019 Chiliwist whitetail
Post by: Silenthunter on June 18, 2019, 03:20:08 PM
I drew the Chiliwist any whitetail tag from November 1st thru 20th.  Looking for any insight for whitetail in this unit. Hunt Mulies in it and have seen a few whitetail around Bensen cr rd and at the bottom of the 300 rd towards hwy 20. I wanted Alta 1st but I got drawn on my 2nd choice which was chiliwist. I'm not looking for someone's pet deer either just want to have a good hunt during a great time of year. Thanks

Best part is, you have over 4 months to put boots on the ground and look for that buck that suites your likes. Fires and mismanagement have devastated this unit as I'm sure you know or have read, but having hunted muleys there before and seen whiteys in spots, should have you ahead of the game and on the right track.

Yah trying to get ahead of the game. Looks like the eastern side of this unit will be a lot of private on the river bottom. Not familiar with the Malott area.

I had this tag with my father-in-law a few years back, the year of the Carlton Complex fire. Huge sections in the unit looked like the moon, nothing left but dirt and rock. We mostly saw mulies, in fact, the whitetail buck I got was hanging out with a nice 4x4 mulie and two mulie does. I'm sure your hunt will be much different than ours. Its amazing how fast parts of the landscape grow back. Shoot me a PM if you want my info

I would definitely plan to be there the final week of your hunt. I had the tag in 2015 and saw a couple hundred mule deer and only 4 whitetails in the 4 days I hunted. A small one horned 3 pt. was breeding a doe a few hours after I shot my buck. Scrape lines really started getting worked around the 14th and I killed this buck on the 16th. His head was pinned to the ground after leaving a scrape line of 8-10 scrapes. It is not necessary to kill a nice whitetail in this unit, but I would highly recommend securing access to private property. Good luck!
