I just found out a few minutes ago that I drew mule deer Unit 55 early tag for Idaho. This is the first quality tag I have ever drawn in any state. I have hunted Idaho some, but never south ID. I'll be headed there next month to scout, and the season starts in August. If anyone has ever hunted this unit or has knowledge of it, I would be forever indebted to you for any help at all. PM me if you don't want the info public.
Thanks all :hello:

sweet tag and congrats on a tough draw. I applied for this tag in the Oct season tho.
-
ive thought about hunting it for the archery late hunt. I will see if i can find the places i had found to try out scouting

Thanks man. I appreciate the intel.

its a pretty small unit and the area bucks will be in august is even smaller. don't know how many tags there are (been a while since i looked at that hunt) but other tag holders will likely be your company. start at Oakley and go up

You know me, I see high ground I head for it. Cache peak would be where my boots would hit the ground. I dont have personal experience other than looking at it. Alot of barren range land down low. I think about 50% of the unit is rangeland.

That's what it looked like flying around on Google Earth last night. I was kind of thinking to stick to the National Forest anyway. I figured in August, the bigger bucks will be up high in the summer range. :dunno:

Thats what I'd think. Either that or private ag. I don't recall much of that though, and I'm not much of a door knocker or field watcher, so......

I don't have any specific info on the unit but one bit of advice I point out to folks when e scouting is if it immediately catches your eye as "the spot", it catches the eye of every other tag holder looking at Google earth. Food for thought.

anything above 8000 ft is where id start in august

Spend a few hundred bucks and actually get in a plane.

Lots of roadless area. Huge basins on little independent mountain ranges. Most of the giant deer are on the ag interface. There is a particular drainage that historically holds the big deer.
-
i'm in 54 a few times a year but no experience with 55. I do know a guy who hunts it, I'll see if he is willing to give a few details

That'd be great. PM me if you (or he) wants to keep the info private.

$450/hr.....seems a little ridiculous. That’s sawtooth, maybe you can find cheaper.
