I picked up a CVA Optima from a member on here . I was thinking about getting the blackhorn plug and using the blackhorn 209 . Just looking for some real world experience. Pros and cons ? Thanks Jason

I didn't look too hard, but was unable to find any to try (local)
Anyone know where to find it?

I like it. Way cleaner and isn't corrosive. Definitely get more shots in between cleanings.

Be somewhat careful with BH 209. While it is not AS corrosive as other BP and BP subs - it still has Potassium and Sulphur in the mix (necessary to qualify as a BP sub). It can get to blued ML's much quicker than you might think
-
BH is still corrosive after the shot, still need to clean once you get home. I had a gun that shot better fouled, I left it dirty for two weeks, bad idea! Breech plug was pitted, barrel appeared to be ok though. Now I clean after any day I shoot. Very quick and easy to clean a gun that’s shooting BH and they do make a solvent specifically for it.

Curious as I have been looking at adding a ML to the stable and was thinking 209 based on what I have read.
If it shoots better fouled but you clean it due to corrosion, what do you do for hunting season to make sure it is shooting optimum? Or is the difference small enough to not be much difference at hunting ranges? Would going with a stainless barrel be a better option for corrosion resistance in that situation?

BH is somewhat corrosive but nothing like what you expect when compared to other BP's or BP subs.
BH is a great powder for most if you are able to use a primer for ignition. I, personally, do not use it all that much because of the cost for 10 ounces of powder. I choose to use T7 which is somewhat more corrosive than BH but not so corrosive that I have to worry about it use. BUT! I am shooting Stainless Steel ML - were I shooting blued models, I am sure that I would have to be more vigilant about the possibility of corrosion. The next consideration might be the people on the wet side of Washington. Water-Moisture is the trigger for corrosion. If the residue in the bore after shooting gets damp the corrosion process will begin.
How you maintain your bore/breech is the key factor. As stated I use T7 and seldom clean during the hunting season because I do prefer to shoot a "semi fouled" bore. So in most cases I really do not 'clean' the rifle until the end of hunting season. The main thought is if you think there is moisture in your bore you have to get it dried out. Without moisture the corrosion process is stymied.

How many shots are you talking about taking in a range session?

Three forks Reloading in Cle Elum has it. Next time I go over to that side you want me to get you some?
-
I got some at basspro. Had to ask the guy at the gun counter though. They keep it in the back.
-
I asked the guy at Bass Pro, at the gun counter, and he said they don't carry it there. When I got home, the web site said they had it in stock at Tacoma
-
I had a buddy get some for me today at sportsmans warehouse in federal way and they had more..
-
I’ll give federal way sportsman’s a call!
-
I stopped by Sportsman's on Friday after my Tahoma duty, but they were out

The federal way store?
-
Yes. There was a spot for it, but it was empty
Also did not have RWS musket caps.
Yes, they had them In the newer 200ct package
-
crap!
-
I might be wrong! I can order both, online, for pickup today.
Also noticed that the package has changed for the RWS caps.
So, maybe just the shelf stock was gone for the powder, and I didn't see red labels at the cap shelf, so assumed they did not have them.
-
I got you are you just using RWS caps or 209?
-
I use musket on my Knight Bighorn, and I am converting my Remington 700MLS to a 209 system
-
How do you like the Remington ?
-
I've had it since 1997. Shoots VERY nice. I did change it from 54 to 50 after I pooched the barrel with a double charge :bash:
Bought a barrel from one of the guys that builds them into smokeless ML's.
Right now trying to clearance the trigger area for a Timney (trigger pins ride the ADL trigger guard, and the safety binds))
-
They definitely look like nice rifles !
-
converted my optima to 209 and other then finding BH locally and having to try a couple different brands of primers i love it.

The Federal Way Sportsmans has been pretty good about keeping BH209 in stock. That's where I've bought every time.
BH209 does burn cleaner. I still clean after every session, as I never let any kind of black powder (or substitute) sit in my barrel. I always have a pile of Federal 209a primers on hand for my shotgun reloading. They work well with the BH209 specific breech plug in my Accura V2.

How many rounds do you send downrange in a range session if you don't mind me asking?

Depends on the session. If I'm just checking zero real quick before heading somewhere, then just 3 shots. If it's an actual range session for practice, I'll typically do 5 shots at 50 yards, 5 at 100, 5 at 130 and 5 at 150 with my peep setup. Some sessions I just send 10-20 shots at the 130 yard target and call it good. So it's not extended shooting sessions compared to what somebody else might shoot 100 or so rounds. I'm usually shooting other guns at the session as well. Initially I'd run a dry patch down with the range rod after 5 shots. Then I changed it to after 10 shots. Now that I'm used to BH209, I don't bother and just clean it after.

I did an online order for pickup at Fed Way Sportsmans. Got e-mail an hour later that it was ready for pickup. :)
I shot the converted Remington 700ML yesterday with T7. Shot well!
Will try with BH209 next week.

I bought a used Optima last year for $100...swapped to a BH209 plug and correct firing pin. Loaded up 100gr of BH with 290gr Barnes TEZ and first two shots were touching at 50, ran it out to 100 and hit right where I wanted. I put it away and then a week later, went out and double lunged a bull.

Damnimissed
What was wrong with the firing pin in your Optima.

You just have to replace it with the proper firing pin for 209 primers.
