This was 12 year old Noah's first ever big game hunt, his dad brought him on a Washington bear hunt. The first evening they had 11 elk including three spikes within 20 yards of their blind. The next morning they heard a bear in the brush but it never showed itself. On the second evening (last night) guide Ray set up on a waterhole that has been historically good. Just before dark Noah spotted the bear first, it came to drink through a low spot and it's back was barely visible, he had to stand up and shot offhand dropping the bear face first into the pond mud with one well placed shot through both shoulders and lungs with his 6.5 creedmore. His expression tells the story, excellent job Noah!  :IBCOOL:

We are busy archery elk hunting, it's been tough, the elk have not been calling good, we see them and have tried various tactics but had no shots yet, however, the last couple days the elk are starting to turn on. Yesterday we saw 6 bulls and probably heard another 6 or 8 bulls bugle but we couldn't get any of them close enough for shots. This morning one guide called one good 6x6 bull to 7 yards and another guide called another medium sized bull to 25 yards. Two arrows were released but didn't find blood, one bull took off completely but the other guide is still on the other bull and waiting a while to go after it again, it is still talkative, they know right where he's at right now, but don't want to blow him out of there, so they are waiting a little while. A third guide spotted two bulls and think they have one bedded in a brush pocket, the hunter was pretty whipped plus they did't want to blow that bull out of there so the hunter is napping now and they are going after that bull again this evening. I like the old saying, 'the third time is a charm", so I'm hoping we find blood on the next shot opportunity.

Ray is busy farming again for a couple weeks. Daniel saw two nice 4x4 bucks yesterday and found a fairly nice 6 point muley shed a couple days ago. No bucks in bow range yet, but we've been concentrating on elk.

One of the guides called a big herd bull to within 67 yards last night, unfortunately due to other elk in the way the hunter was pinned down and couldn't get closer and the herd bull wasn't coming any closer. Suddenly they spotted a 5x5 satellite bull that had snuck in the backside, the hunter turned but miscalculated distance and shot low and missed, the 2nd arrow found home, they tracked the bull quite a ways but just at dark they saw him still on his feet so they backed off and started hiking out the lower route to let him hopefully bed down over night, I picked them up at 11pm. This morning we took them back to the top where they are parked to hike back in to where they last saw the bull. Unfortunately we had a heavy lightning storm and even snow on the tops overnight, but hopefully they can find the bull even though the rain probably washed away all the blood. Fingers crossed.

The other two guides and hunters are back after the other bulls they saw and the bulls missed yesterday. Fingers crossed on both hands for better luck today! The weather change as usual totally changed this hunt, we went from struggling to get an answer, now we are all over lots of bulls and they are calling good, all the stars just need to line up so that we are packing out meat!

Thanks Machias!

It rained hard overnight, they searched quite a while the next morning but didn't find the bull the next day. The big herd bull took his cows and disappeared, we still haven't found him again. Two other bulls were called in close range the next day but the hunters couldn't get clear shots. The next day after that we called in a 4x4 that we couldn't get a shot and saw the bull was wounded s few days before, he had moved two big drainages to the north, he seems to be doing ok, he'll probably heal up and maybe we will get on him again. Last night on the last day of the hunt we called in another bull to the one hunter who hadn't had a shot yet, we had three guided hunters in camp, but he didn't see the bull, Russ the guide showed him the cell phone video of the bull and unfortunately that was the end of that hunt. No kills, but lots of calling action and some opportunities that didn't work out.

Not sure if it was the same herd bull but one of the hunters missed a big herd bull at 25 yards earlier this week, he miscalculated the distance and shot right over the top of him! We had two more misses this week on bulls unfortunately and a few close calls with no arrows released. Opportunity has been good but no kills until Matt from California drilled a 4x5 bull through the heart, it took a couple steps and tipped over in less than 10 yards, congrats goes to Matt, best shot of the season so far!

(I'll add a photo when I get it)

We had a good archery hunt, we called in between 30 to 40 bulls, I lost count, quite often the bulls were close but no shot opportunities, that happens often bow hunting as any bow hunter knows. Eight out of thirteen hunters had at least one good shot opportunity, unfortunately only one hunter made a good hit that resulted in a dead bull, but nonetheless it was a good season with lots of bulls called in and shot opportunity. Fortunately most of the bulls we didn't get were complete misses, one bull that was wounded we saw a couple days later and he is doing good, I hope we can find him again in rifle season.

We started moose hunting today, there is a lot of snow in moose country, one guide who has some bulls staked out went as far as he could this morning with his truck chained up, the snow is two feet deep, they hiked in further, spotted one of the big bulls a mile away and are stalking in closer now. I've got an extra guide on hand to bring a snowmobile if they put the hammer down.

I've got another guide calling another bull right now too, I'm anxiously awaiting The "come and help" call from either guide.

We also started mule deer hunting in Utah today, there seems to be a good supply of deer, its just a matter of finding which one the hunter wants to shoot. This is almost always a 100% hunt. I do still have two hunts available if anyone needs a good mule deer hunt, it's a 13,000 acre ranch and we only do 10 deer hunts per year, last year I hunted for myself on the last day of season after all the other hunters filled their tags and still saw 9 bucks that day and shot an average size 4x4 in the afternoon, I saw three bucks that day better than him but didn't get them.

Guide Ray spotted bull tracks going into some thick cover, he circled the area and the moose never came out, Ray set up at a good vantage point where he thought the moose would come out and Patty put the hammer down on this bull at about 100 yards this afternoon. Great shooting Patty, I love it when a plan comes together!

The other guide Charlie went after a big bull they spotted at long distance yesterday but they didn't get him, they ran out of daylight. This morning they headed in again and spotted two bulls, one big one and a young one, the hunter got on the bull and pulled the trigger, Charlie says shoot again he's still standing, shoot again he's walking away. There was one problem, the hunter dropped his bull! It turns out he shot the wrong bull by accident! So the big boy is still on the mountain! Daniel and Ray went and helped and they got the bull out in good time today. The hunter drew other tags and was happy to get his moose and move onto the next hunt.

Archery Moose Down
In Idaho we have another moose hunter who drew a tag the first time he applied and he is bow hunting. They have been hunting the same drainage that I arrowed my moose in several years ago, while scouting the guides had found a good bull in the drainage a few days ago. On the first day of the hunt yesterday they saw two young bulls and called at two other bulls they didn't get to see. Today guide Tate called in a bull to 16 yards, Jack decided he wanted the young bull and sunk his arrow, they waited about 1.5 hours and went tracking, the bull had only gone about 230 yards and dropped. Tate called and said bring the horses, he would start piecing out the bull for packing. Josiah readied the horses and headed up to meet them, they will probably be late getting back, I don't have any photos to show yet but will add photos when I get them.

Utah Mule Deer
Our first mule deer hunt of the year is underway on our northern Utah ranch. Guide Russell and hunter Ronnie had seen about 70 deer including several bucks by noon yesterday, Ronnie said there was a good 4x4 but he was too far away. This morning they got on another good buck at closer range but Ronnie missed so they are still hunting. Hopefully they put the next good buck on the ground, my fingers are crossed!

Idaho Scouting
We are also scouting for deer and elk in Idaho, we've got some bulls and bucks spotted and hopefully can get hunters on them when rifle season opens, fingers on other hand crossed!

Unfortunately more misses, they even sighted the gun in and more misses! I advised to stalk in closer for easier shots, I think excitement must be playing a role in the misses? :dunno:

Russell took this video yesterday evening when they spotted the group of bucks at 675, then they stalked to within 185 yards for a shot, but the bucks caught a scent or heard them and started moving off and the hunter couldn't find them in his scope before they got out of sight. The hunter had to leave this morning and another hunter arrives at noon. Russell will be looking for one of these larger bucks or one of the bucks that was missed. Fingers crossed again for a successful hunt!

I'm always dismayed at the number of misses when you post these recaps.

We are pretty dismayed too at times. Actually it's just a part of hunting and quite a few of the hunters we get are more novice type hunters and more prone to get excited and miss. But it takes a lot of self control when a big bull is fired up and close! On a positive note, we've been having pretty good luck on our Idaho rifle hunts, several bucks and bulls have been taken, when I get a chance I'll post some updates.

10 bulls down so far, several others missed, many others seen, this is turning into a good elk season, but packing all these elk out has been a pile of work, will post elk photos when possible.

Eric nailed one of the first bucks this deer season in Idaho. He passed several smaller bucks and held out for a 4x4 buck, congrats Eric.

Washington Late Buck
We didn't hunt early buck in WA this year, we concentrated on our Idaho and Utah hunts. I had two hunters and a guide out the first morning for the WA late buck season and they saw 10 bucks, there wass a doe that several bucks were chasing, looks like late season is going to be a good one for us here in WA this year. First day one hunter filled out, the next morning , yesterday the other hunter filled out.

Montana Deer Season
Scouting this week before the hunters arrived, guide Derek saw 15 shooter bucks. Devon and Stephanie started hunting two days ago, Stephanie nailed her buck the first evening, Derek told me she shot the wrong buck, there was a bigger buck, but she was tickled so he never mentioned that the bigger buck got away, why spoil it for her. Devon nailed a toad the next morning and they are headed to the taxidermist.

Utah Deer Season
We just finished Utah, Russell's hunters nailed the last two bucks day before yesterday. It was a good season with lots of deer and bucks seen. Next year should be real good, we left plenty of bucks on the ranch.

Idaho Elk Hunting
We ended up having one of our best elk seasons ever in Idaho. The cow elk season is still ongoing, we nailed another cow elk yesterday and still have a couple more hunters coming, we'll be done on the 15th.

Cougar Season
Looking forward to another cougar season, that will get underway in December as soon as more snow hits the ground.

Photos
I broke my phone and lost all my photos, as soon as I get guides and hunters to forward photos again I'll try to get some of them posted. Here are two of the Utah bucks taken this season by Randy and Steve.

Its been a super busy season for us all fall, now we are busy chasing the big cats. Snow has been tough at times but hunting has been good when we have had snow and have taken numerous cats. Two days ago Brian ran into a really bad cat. The cat had a 40" stride and a fairly good sized foot, he figured it was a tom, normally most cats with more than a 36" stride are toms.

The track was kind of cold so he walked the dogs a ways until they could take it on their own. It was a fairly long chase, the cat eventually ended up in an overgrown clear cut. Brian headed in with the hunter to get the cat, but he noticed at times the dogs would really roar and then some silence and then a roar again. This had him worried, not a good sign, the dogs should be barking steady.

When they got a little closer he realized it was bayed up on the ground in the brush, he moved in closer, every time a dog would get too close the cat would charge and try to catch the dog, the dogs were all bitten and bleeding. Suddenly the cat decided Brian was too close and charged, Brian didn't want to shoot the cat so he turned and ran straight downhill, Ruby grabbed the cat but the cat turned and grabbed her, a couple other dogs grabbed the cat and Ruby escaped with a few bites and some scratches. Then the cat charged Brian again, other dogs intervened and Brian escaped injury again.

Finally the cat turned and ran out of the overgrown clearcut and treed in a big fir. The hunter shot the cat and Brian inspected the hounds, all 6 dogs and Ruby had bite marks on their heads or necks with scratches and punctures on their sides and hind quarters. After photos he packed the cat and the dogs were all able to walk out on their own. Turned out the cat was an old female, really mean old female, I think she'd been conditioned by the wolves and that is why she didn't really fear the dogs.

After getting home Brian gave all the dogs antibiotics, most didn't eat anything, but the dogs all made it through the first night, the next evening they all ate, and they made it through a second night, we are hoping they all heal up and we don't lose any of them, so far they are all hanging in there.

Photos of the female that had the 40" stride!

Yesterday morning it was the first day of a new hunt, it was snowing lightly, we checked some canyons on snowmobiles then got back to the truck and went to a different area, we were only 10 minutes from the truck on snowmobiles when we cut a nice track that measured 39-40 inches, with big toes I was certain it was a decent tom, there very little snow in the track, but unfortunately it was headed toward private land.

We went over the ridge and down the next canyon, the tom had hunted the private land and came back out headed north into public land. I cut further down the that canyon and headed up the next canyon, the tom had already crossed that canyon too so I headed further up to see if he crossed again. Further up the canyon the tom came back on the road, walked the road a ways, then cut back up on the ridge to the north again, we went to the end of the road and turned around and come back out to go check the next canyon to the north, on the way out I saw where the lion had come off the ridge and crossed our snowmobile tracks, it couldn't have been more than 5 or 10 minutes since he crossed. I looked at Brandon, "I'm loving it, this track is smoking hot, let's get the dogs!"

We went back to the truck to get the dogs and Randy. It was getting light as we readied the hounds and Randy got ready for his first snowmobile ride, we loaded the dogs, showed Randy how to operate his snowmobile, and headed back up the mountain to chase the cat. We got back to the track and got the dogs out, they didn't even have to put their heads in the track to smell the cat's scent and opened loudly. We released the hounds and the chase was on, the dogs were all moving the track as fast as they could. The tom went maybe a half mile or so and took refuge in a fir tree. The dogs were screaming treed so we headed up the hill from the snow machines. It was a pretty short hike but really steep, we got there and at first sight I knew it was a decent tom. Brandon tied the dogs back, Randy took a careful aim, boom, the cat fell out deader than a doornail, I love it when a plan comes together!

Upon examination we determined the cat must have picked his head up just as Randy shot because the bullet entered the chest but came out the top of the cat's head, no wonder he fell out dead and didn't run at all. We got everything off the mountain and headed for home, a tom cat in the bag and smiles on our faces.

How common is it for the dogs to get injured while chasing cats??

It varies, most cats are afraid of the dogs even though the dogs are much smaller, sometimes we go a few years without a dog getting hurt and then we might run into a bad cat or two then maybe a few years again.

Assume DL is talking about the "mean old female" that put holes in all his hounds.....

Hope the pups heal up well BP, that guide must have some salt to have not shot when she first charged him. Wild ride!

The tom quotas filled in southern Idaho, now we can only take females. Today I cut two different toms, it was hard leaving this smoking hot tom! I guess he will be bigger next year!

Is Brian hunting up north also or are you just hunting south?

Brian is up north, today he got one in the rain, he said the dogs really struggled but they got lucky and caught the cat.

Today I cut a 53" tom, biggest I've seen this year, fresh track, I thought about running it just for photos but figured I better stay focused on getting my hunter a cat.

The next day I cut more tom tracks and a better than average sized 37" female, at daylight we started the dogs on the female track (when tom quotas are filled, you can only shoot females). It was a pretty long chase for a female, they don't usually go as far as most toms, but this one covered some country. She went through some big roadless country but came out close to another road, we saw the dogs go around an open hillside just before they jumped her, then she went up a tree pretty quickly, we could hear the dogs treeing from the road. She treed about 1/4 mile from where a tom had treed a few years ago, I could see that tree from where we parked the sleds to walk in. Even though the tracks looked female, the head looked female, and the body looked female, we had to make sure. In spite of various strategies the cat wouldn't move to get a good view of under the tail so Brandon climbed the tree to get the cat to move, that finally worked when he got close enough that the cat got a little excited! LOL

Daniel had walked in a new pup to the tree to help get him started. The pup did pretty good, especially when Ken shot and the cat hit the ground, next time we'll let the pup run the track with the older dogs, I think he's ready.

Congrats to Ken for a great shot on a nice cat!

The Road Hunter
Earlier in the season I found a tom track that came onto the road and then seemed to prefer road hunting. At this time there was a good crust on the snow and tire tracks in the road were frozen hard, the cat left the road about 6 different times but came right back onto the road, I'm sure he figured out quickly that he could sneak much more quietly down the road on frozen tire tracks than loudly breaking through hard crusted snow. In a couple places the cat walked more than a mile without setting a single foot off those hard frozen tire tracks.

It was intriguing but frustrating to work this track out, at two different road intersections Branden and I had to go both ways a long way to find tracks, and at the first intersection it was nearly a mile up one of the roads before I found where he left the road to check/leave scent at a big fir. At the second intersection it was quicker, Branden found a couple tracks and we were headed the right way again. After about three hours and 7 miles of road I finally found where I thought the tom left the road for good. I went another mile just to try and be sure but couldn't find any more cougar tracks so we headed back to the truck to get the hounds, the hunters, and get after this cat.

We loaded everything up and headed back to the last track (I hoped) with all of us on snowmobiles. By now it had been daylight for a while, as soon as we got back to the tracks we readied the hounds and walked them to the tracks, it was a pretty good track meaning plenty of scent and the hounds opened up baying loudly right away, we unsnapped them and the chase was on. We watched the hounds going between thick patches of aspen and suddenly just before cresting the top of the mountain, the barking picked up, the chase took a sudden turn to the right, I barely had time to say I think they jumped the cat and Cash started treeing, then Banjo, Lady, and Blue all settled in, we could see two big firs near the top, the cat was probably in one of them.

There was a road closer to the top that we rode into and everyone headed down from there. The guys were tying up the hounds and Kathy was getting ready to shoot then instantly the tom bailed out, with a few impressive jumps he was out of sight and headed straight downhill fast. It was much quicker to go back to the snow machines so Branden followed the hounds and cat, everyone else went back to the top to ride back down to the bottom where we started the cat.

The dogs caught up with the cat on the ground and there was a big fiasco, Branden come running in and I think that scared the cat enough he climbed the closest tree, a dead aspen. Branden called me on the radio and said the cat got ahold of some of the dogs, they were bleeding but it didn't look like anything serious, at the bottom of the mountain we headed in again, we could see the treed cat, he stuck out like a cougar in a dead tree with no limbs.

Kathy prepared to shoot, the guides tied up the dogs, boom the cat fell out, but he wasn't dead. I told Branden to follow the cat, we don't want to turn a dog loose unless we absolutely have to, there is nothing harder on dogs than a wounded cat. Branden was after that tom like a hound on a fresh coon track, the tom tried to lose him by circling around and then side hilling, then he headed uphill, but not too far, yes, Branden treed the lion himself without the aid of dogs this time. Brandon waited at the bottom of the tree with the tom glaring at him while Kathy, Doug, and Daniel hiked up the mountain and this time the tom died instantly when Kathy shot, in fact the cat had to be dislodged out of the tree because it hung up.

We got some nice photos, inspected the hounds, loaded everything up, and headed for the truck. It was another very exciting hunt with many memories for everyone involved. None of the dogs were hurt seriously, most of the blood was from superficial scratches and a couple bites that didn't cause any real harm, I felt lucky that no serious injury was inflicted by the cat, the dogs all healed up pretty quickly. Blue suffered the most serious injury from breaking the crusty snow most of the way up the mountain, he wore all the hair off the inside of his front legs and is still a little tender.

Congrats to Kathy on her dandy lion!

There is always a little healthy competition between guides, I think this is good, it keeps us sharp and eager to outdo the other, LOL. Daniel was the first to nail a cat this year. He had passed a couple smaller cat tracks and on this day he cut the tracks of a little bit better cat and his hunter Damon wanted to go after it. They started the cat about 8 or 9 am before I was able to get there, I finally arrived part way through, I made sure Daniel had things handled, heard the dogs locate and start treeing, the guys headed in on foot so I went back to my truck and took my hunter and spouse back to the house and started getting dinner ready. As usual Daniel did an outstanding job, he made all the right moves and we had our first completed cougar hunt for the season. I love it when a plan comes together, congrats to Damon from Texas.

I got the next cat, which was Kathy's tom, so now we had two down, one for each of us. Daniel got the next cat for his hunter Gilbert also from Texas, now Daniel was ahead of me again.

Daniel and Branden actually each found a tom track that morning but Daniel's track was fresher so that's the cat we went after, we only had one hunter in camp at that time. The cat covered a little ground but as soon as he started zig zagging I figured they must have jumped him, he tried to make it over the top of the mountain but the dogs closed the gap and the cat made a quick dash down the mountain, at the bottom he went up a tree. It was a good chase and no dogs were harmed, that's always a good thing. Gilbert was ecstatic about his cat, this was his fourth cougar hunt, two hunts to New Mexico and one hunt with us last year when we got rained out of any decent hunting and only saw a couple small tracks, he decided to return with us this year and we got it done for him. Congrats Gilbert, that tom was worth the wait!

Quite a few of the hunters we get are or have been hound hunters at some point in their life. Damon owned coon hounds his whole life, it was his goal to get a lion with his lever action, he enjoyed watching the dogs, and we had some good conversation about hounds during his hunt. He has promised all his grandkids that he will take them either hound hunting for bear or cougar. Last spring he brought his oldest grandson bear hunting with us. I think he said the next grandson wants to cougar hunt so we'll probably see him again next winter. You have to admire him for making sure all his grandkids get a chance to go on a western style hound hunt.

In Memory of Ruby
I wasn't sure if I was going to write about this or not or when, but Ruby was such a special little dog that it wouldn't be right not to make a post in her memory.

There are dangers when hunting, when operating equipment in rough country, when hunting in extreme weather, when hound hunting, and especially when hound hunting big predators in extreme weather, there are dangers for the hunters and for the dogs, we try our best to hunt smart and to minimize dangers to people and dogs, but sometimes irreversible things happen and after they happen you look back and wished that somehow you might have done something differently that could have produced a different outcome or prevented something from happening even when circumstances are simply out of your control.

I think the element of danger is one of the attractions to hunting big predators, it's not that I want to see anything bad happen, exactly the opposite is true, but it adds a little challenge to make sure nothing goes wrong, I hope that makes some sort of sense. Any guide's first responsibility is for his hunter's safety, it's our responsibility to keep their trip as safe as possible. In my mind a hound hunting guide's second responsibility is the safety of the hounds. We look over the dogs after every chase and make careful calculations regarding which dogs are ready to hunt again and which ones should have another day/week(s) off to rest.

Hounds are like athletes, they are driven internally to perform at extreme levels and they love it, but sometimes hounds like athletes over do it and then they require time to heal sore muscles, sore feet, injuries from running through heavy brush, or injuries inflicted by the game they so love to chase. Recently Brian ran into a nasty female lion that left it's marks on every hound that day, marks on Ruby, and nearly caught Brian if Ruby hadn't of grabbed the cat as it ran towards Brian, and then the other hounds grabbed the cat and saved Ruby, it was a team effort that resulted in the dogs all surviving, even though they all had bites and scratches they have been all healing and doing well.

Ruby was only about 20-25 pounds, half Jahg Terrier and half Irish Terrier, but her heart was larger than she was and she was Brian's (my son) near constant companion, she literally went nearly everywhere with him, he taught her manners, blood trailing, track trailing, and she seemed the best at all of it and had her own little personality that everyone liked. Through the years she has made countless friends of our hunters, she has found numerous wounded deer and elk, and has bayed 300+ pound wounded bear and caught cougar by herself. When we knew an animal was hit but couldn't track it ourselves you went and got Brian and Ruby and if the animal left any amount of blood trail, she would find it. When a nasty old female lion made a dash at Brian this winter it was Ruby that grabbed the cat first, then the hounds jumped in and saved her. A few years ago I watched a wounded lion shake her in it's jaws like a rag doll, we got the lion killed, but I wasn't sure she had enough blood to make it off the mountain, amazingly she did and she recovered tougher than before.

Two days ago Brain went hunting just to run a few young dogs and take photos if he found a good track, there was just a skiff of snow so we are waiting on more snow before we have any more lion hunters come. He found the track of a good tom and let the hounds start the track and let Ruby go along too. There was a big open hillside and as half expected the hounds lost the track with the lack of snow. Somehow Ruby managed to follow the lion through, this wasn't the first time that's happened, she's done it a few times through the years, but today was different, she didn't know it but this big cat had little fear of a single small dog.

She caught the cat after two or three miles in the rough Idaho mountains, Brian could tell she caught up with the cat and headed up the mountain, but he was too late getting there, as he approached he could see where the cat had scampered off from Ruby's half eaten body. I've been in the same position a few times in my life with favorite hounds and know how tough these situations are in every respect. One of the first thoughts is to get more dogs and go get the lion, but with little to no snow what if another single or only two dogs catch the cat again, will the same scenario occur again?

Brian called as soon as he could and my wife and I listened to the bad news, but we all agreed, conditions were in the cat's favor, it was probably smarter to let him go this time.

Ruby will be missed, she was a special dog that can never be replaced by any other dog.
Happy Hunting Ruby!

(here are a few of Ruby's trophy photos)

Thanks everyone, Ruby was a great loss, she will be missed immensely, but never forgotten, she will definitely be one of our most memorized dogs. We've talked some already about how to try and replace her as best as possible, she did perform a very important task with her excellent blood trailing abilities and it's important that we try to get that void filled. Probably going to be another small type of terrier.

Guide Derek packed out the head and rack of this bull after they quartered and boned it. My wranglers were busy packing a camp so I took three horses in the next morning to pack out the rest of this bull. I loaded both rear quarters and the boned out meat from the front half of the elk all on one horse, he's a stud of a horse, if I had realized the front quarters were shot up so bad i probably would have only taken one pack horse, I didn't even bother packing Atlas. When off trail packing like this I quite often just let the horses follow me out, it's easier getting through brushy areas and these horses are great about following each other.

One time this year I was packing a bull out in Utah through a real tough rocky steep stretch, I had mostly the same horses, Zeb didn't want to go any further, he's big hooved and has more trouble in big rock than smaller hooved horses, but I wanted to get through the worst of it before dark and he didn't want to budge any further, so I just tied his lead rope to his saddle and left him standing there looking stubborn! We didn't even get out of sight and he started following again, I just left him loose the rest of the way out, we were both happier!  :chuckle:

Here's another cougar that guide Brian recently caught for Jason from Florida. Jason was scheduled to be his first cougar hunter but the weather forecast wasn't good so I talked Jason into delaying his hunt until later in the season. He sent me this message before the hunt:

"Thank you for being honest, and trying to make sure I get the best hunt for my money. This is the most I have ever spent on a hunt. It's good to know that I picked a outfitter that looks out for me the Hunter."

After the hunt I asked if he had a good time:

"I had a great time. Your son is the most impressive guide I have ever met. And the best tracker I've ever met that boy must be half Indian."
"And again, thanks for talking me into coming later. You have a first class operation."

Thanks for sending the photos Jason and congratulations on a dandy cat!

Weather has not been good lately in our lion hunting area so we haven't done any cat hunts for about a month, I'm not sure if we will get any more good weather, we may be done lion hunting for this season. I would rather have hunters wait till next year than come and have an unsuccessful hunt.

We did spend a week in Utah cow elk hunting, 3 out of 4 hunters tagged elk, the 4th hunter missed numerous times but had a great time, all four hunters plan on hunting again next year. Guide Daniel and myself tagged cows for ourselves before leaving Utah too, I just finished processing my elk yesterday and have tried both steaks and burger, my elk is an excellent eater as was Daniel's, we had elk chile from his elk already too. The wife dropped off some meat at Egger's for Pepperoni and Sausage Links, can't wait to get that back!

Here's some photos from our late January cow elk hunt:

Was going through trail cam photos and thought I would share this photo of wolves at one of our bear baits in Idaho. This year wolf season will be open during spring bear season, we are hoping these wolves come back, one of the hunters might go home with his bear and some wolves? It's an uphill battle, IDFG keeps lengthening wolf seasons, but the wolves keep getting smarter, I'm not sure if we can keep them from increasing in numbers even if there was year round hunting and trapping.

Here are a couple thoughts:

 - How many wolves do you see in the photo?
 - How many wolves are there but not in the photo?

If a guy is going to treestand hunt bear over bait in idaho, your pic is a good argument to use an ar15 with a reflex sight.  .450 bushmaster would be a good choice.  Id aim at this wolf, maybe get 2 with 1 bullet.

Unlikely to be there if you were in shotgun range but the two red dots should account for four with a good bullet and caliber, thanks

Today was a good day, a successful trip up the mountain and an estimated 17 Idaho elk saved per year that this wolf will not be eating.

A big old female!

Not from the pack that I posted the photo, but from another pack not too far from there that are hunting the elk winter range hard.

She won't be seeing a dentist in the future either. Already checked in with IDFG and the F4WM cost reimbursement will be put to good use to try and remove additional wolves.

Ive been killing time on the boat watching wolf hunting videos on youtube.  After 40 days at sea im going to get home, sleep in my own bed 1 night, then head to idaho.  Really itching to get out there and give it a shot.

If you are in areas that have wolves there is always a slim chance of seeing one, to up your odds keep covering lots of ground until you find an area where wolves are making fresh tracks. Keep in mind they can pick up and move miles in a single night for any reason, most packs hunt over a very wide area, so it's really important to concentrate your efforts in areas with fresh sign and when there is no longer fresh sign in that area cover ground until you find fresh sign again.  :twocents:

We don't know how to consistently kill wolves yet, but we are learning more every year and what everyone is allowed to do is changing for the better nearly every year. I'm hopeful that the lengthened season until the end of June will help this spring, we get trailcam photos of some wolves at our bear baits every year, although they don't consistently come to bear baits, if you are lucky enough to be at the right bait at the right time we hope we can get a wolf or two and help slow the increase in their numbers.

If a guy is a member of F4WM it could be a good day...

Could almost pay for the hunt!!!
