I’m not a whitetail hunter, so this will be interesting. :chuckle:
I’d really like to kill a buck in my home County so that is where I will start in Sept. I hung one camera in early July and just checked it this weekend. I hung another camera in another good area. I won’t check them again until the 29th and then I’ll be hunting/scouting for a week or so.
My goal is 170” gross for the tag, but mostly looking forward to the experience.
-
Looks like a couple heavy 4 points and a nice 4x5 coming into my cam. As you can see, I’m an amateur when it comes to cam alignment. No shooter buck, yet

There are some good bucks tucked away here and there.

Zammers Bango, that buck in the snow is a monster!
See the fresh boot track in the snow to the right of his face? Thats mine. I went in the day before, put out estrous scent with the plan of hunting my stand there the next day, meaning the day that pic was taken. When i woke up i decided not to, for no reason i can recall. :bash: never knew that buck existed, its my one and only pic of him. And take into account, the steep cam angle makes tines look much shorter.

If only it were 2014. I had two in my area that were freakishly big. Both seven by sevens, very wide, plenty of mass, and hanging out in an area that most people do not hunt. I would have turned you onto it just to see one on the ground. But it looks like you won't need any help! Good luck with that tag, what did it cost if you mind sharing? I understand if you don't. Either way, get after it.
-
Well, if one of them pops up, I’m all ears!!!! :chuckle:
I paid $6k. A lot of $$ for me, but a pretty good value for the experience.
-
I’m looking forward to following along here. Good luck!

Nice. Thanks for sharing I was always curious. So far this year just have a couple run of the mill four and five points but if something shows up in the area I'll let you know especially because I may just take a nice doe first chance. Didn't have much time off the last two years so I just want some venison to eat!
-
I think that’s a good price for a tag with that much opportunity. Good luck on the tag a 170” gross buck is a good goal to shoot for and should be obtainable with some patience and possibly pointers from others on where a few big ones are hanging.

Kill a masher  Tagging along

Jumping in here to keep track of the shenanigans. Good luck, JJ. I'm sure you'll kill a slob buck.

I'd head to the mountains of 101
Good luck

This is going to be great, although I'm such a poor whitetail hunter I think my bar might be about 150, who am I kidding, I think all of the bucks in this post I'd shoot.

Heartbreaking.......... :'( :'(
I let my brother hunt my stand the year I drew a late season archery tag for Chiliwist. He shot a 140 inch 5x5 whitetail out of my stand that I never knew existed. I was pretty bummed out until I scored a nice 165 inch 5x5 mulie on a sweet spot and stalk hunt in November!

A buddy in Nebraska invited me for a whitetail muzzleloader hunt (OTC license). I backed out the week prior, he called another friend who shot a 187" whitetail from the same stand, same day he'd offered me first. That was in the 1990s and I'm still not quite over it.

Could have been worse, what if you sat in the stand from pre-dawn until 3:30, and still got that photo with that time stamp!

That would have been awesome, because that camera was still set on PDT, so the clock is an hour ahead.

Headed out at 0100. Between work and my house build, I’m only gonna get 5 days in this go around.
To be honest, I’m a little nervous about my field judging ability. :chuckle:

They look big to everybody when they crest 160. And i think most "160" whitetails people see are more like 140.

Tag! Can’t wait to see the end result!

Good luck. And by the way there’s some good looking mulies waiting for you in region G this year.

I hunted the first few days of Sept. Saw a ton of bucks and some dandy velvet bucks.
Felt like I was doing something wrong packing my rifle around. :chuckle:
I’ve switched gears to mule deer until November. Got a date with a couple dandies on Sunday morning in the WY high country. Hopefully I can connect on the target buck.

Definitely following this one!

I just want to put Hunt-Wa on report; the number of giant buck locations, given via pm, have been underwhelming to say the least...I even requested an increase to my storage capacity in anticipation of being “blown up”! :chuckle:
I’ve got a 18 day run of hunting starting on Weds - looking forward to getting out!
-
Best of luck, cant wait to see what you turn up.
-
Congrats on your Wyoming buck, love those tall eye guards. Looking forward to seeing the whitetail you poke.

I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a whitetail with brows taller than the G-2. Terrible picture of a really big 4. Long beams and 22-23” wide. Those brows were epic, though!

 my brother got one in 2006 that’s 22” wide with 10” g1’s brows that are blades and 12” long. I’ll see if he can send me a pic.
-
Get after it JJ!!! wishing you nothing but the best of luck!!!
-
Took the muzzy for a walk during midday thinking I just kinda wanted to shoot a deer! I did get on a smaller 5 point, but passed. On the way back, I jumped a yote and got him to stop at 136 yards. I never seen a yote drop so fast; it just pounded him into the ground.

That’s a small target with the smoke pole at that range! Good practice when that big buck steps out
-
Very nice please take a few more of them out!!
-
Nice Shot! Way to keep the predators in check!
-
Nice work!
Something about the head on shot that kills them before they hit the ground.
-
Nice shot !! Skin it ? That’s some money there
-
I finally found a shooter. Seen him twice in the last 4 days. Super frustrating as he has vanished into thin air right in front of me. The only thing I can think is that he is just laying down when I get close. I think I coulda jumped him today, but there was a 145” buck close by and I didn’t want to get into a spot where I made a mistake and shot the wrong deer.
-
 that’s exciting
-
Great job on the yote!! Also like the sounds of where this hunt is headed!! Not wanting to shoot the little 145"...….YES!! Good luck getting on him tomorrow!!
-
Sweet it’s gotta be a good feeling having a certain buck your after now  Good luck hanging your tag on him
-
THey'll be in grocery mode now. They have some calories to make up

Got done last night. Short of my goal, but he is about as big as a 3 gets in our country. No way I was passing when he stepped out.

Am I missing something. I can't see the pics, are they even posted yet? Can't wait!

I started thinking about purchasing this tag several years ago. For me, hunting is 90% about the challenge/experience and 10% about the kill. This tag fits the experience category and to me, was a lot of money, but a great value for the opportunity that it provided. Of course I had a “score” goal, but more importantly, I wanted to share the experience with my dad and brother, I wanted to kill the deer in my home stomping grounds (Whitman County) and I wanted to spent a lot of days in the field.
With the exception of the “score” goal, I was able to accomplish all.

Perfect. That's all you can ask for really. Excited to hear/see the rest of the story.
-
I was also able to affirm that I am NOT a whitetail hunter. :chuckle: I have much admiration for those guys and gals who follow whitetail all year, hang stands, check cameras and then set stands for days and days, hours and hours. That takes a level of dedication that I have not yet attained.
-
Lastly, before I post some pics, I wanted to thank Mtnmuley, Huntnnw, and Bango for just talking through tactics, timing, etc. Having those kinds of resources on this site is a tremendous benefit to all of us and they helped me think my way through this hunt.

I shot my buck last night at the end of 12 straight days of whitetail heaven. I saw some really good deer and 2 that gave me the slip time and again. We don’t have a lot of big whitetail at home and recently, we have even fewer with the blue tongue outbreaks. But, I had an absolute blast trying to scrounge one up!

Nice buck and yup that’s a 4 point by whitetail standards. Or an 8 point if you’re on the other side of the Mason Dixon. :chuckle:
-
Nice buck! Got a pic with some perspective?!
I’m terrible with pics. He is 21” wide, 25” main beams, 11.5” g-2s, 6” brows and 9” g-3’s. Mid 150’s 4 point.
-
Freaking stud (the deer), congrats!
He looks like the one you got on cam but minus the small g4

 I hate big 4 point Whitetail’s! But at the same time they’re pretty cool. :chuckle:

950$ for a shoulder mount ????? wheres the taxi, Medina ??? Stud 8pt any way you look at it, and he is a mounter too.

 I hate big 4 point Whitetail’s! But at the same time they’re pretty cool. :chuckle:
The area I hunted had a bad 4 point gene. The big brow buck I saw on the 25th was just a 4 as well. They are pretty, but just don’t score. That H4 is brutal, even on a heavy buck.

Very nice and congrats! I have only seen a couple 4's of that caliber in 30 years of chasing them.
-
Exceptional buck!
RW
-
Great Buck! You hunted hard, spent lots of time in the field with family and friends and learned a lot along the way, what more could you ask for out of a hunt. Congrats!
-
Congratulations! After a while you begin to categorize deer, and elk for the matter, into your own brackets of what you see personally as a quality animal. This is an excellent example of a record book 4 point whitetail. Everybody's seen a nice 5 point in there life on the hoof but not many can claim they have seen a 150" 4 point. It's not very often so I'm excited to hear the final numbers on this guy!
-
Coming from an actual eastern transplant, that's a stud 8 point-er. At least where I'm from, we called them point-ers.
Congrats, Justin. Great Buck, regardless of how many points it has.
-
Killer deer.
The funny part is you previously mentioned you are NOT a whitetail hunter.
Well you better make time to support next years NOTS.

Great animal and I'm glad to hear your observations about hunting whitetails. Makes my past frustrations seem worth it and not in vain!

Beauty of a buck!

Appreciate the kind words!!!

I hadn’t seen him in person until I shot him. I set up on the timber edge about 3:00 in a high traffic area. At 4:06, a doe fed out and down the draw. 2 minutes later, he stepped out on her trail. He was ultra alert, about 225 yards away. I actually started shaking when I saw him, which hasn’t happened in a looooong time. Made me smile as I lined him up and told myself to knock it off. I was actually surprised that he was a slick 4. I shot him pretty quick once I saw his body size/frame.
