Title: san juan island
Post by: Boonedog123 on August 20, 2019, 07:30:33 PM
Hey,
I drew a second deer doe tag for san juan island unit 413. I know public access is very limited on the island. does anyone have any experience with public lands on the island or any pointers for getting access to private?
  Thank you

I don’t think you will find any huntable public up there on San Juan. Mitchell hill used to exist before Obama traded it away. There used to be a public piece of land at cattle point nrca but hunting is no longer allowed. I see wdfw is now paying people $1000 to allow deer hunting on private because the deer are killing a butterfly. Ridiculous.

These island tags are difficult if you dont have an in with someone...  which happens to be  why all those island have second tags.

These tags are a double edged sword.  They issue 2nd tags because not enough folks hunt in the first place... which makes it really hard for an outsider to get permission... and yet the department has to give everyone a chance at drawing them.

Good luck on your search.

I just moved to Camano, if the deer weren’t standing in my yard I would find it difficult to get permission from anyone around here. Zero public, huntable land.
And I bought Eastside tags this year, so no backyard bambi for me this time.

You don't have to pick a side for deer, with a deer tag you can hunt either side.

What meant to say was a modern tag, and I drew a permit on the Eastside.
Also notice it was 2am when I posted and there may have been a few beers involved
Cheers

I saw they are also making you have signed permission to hunt on someone's land as well on the islands.  If you are checked and not carrying around the signed hunting permission, you will get a trespassing ticket.

This is not new....

You might start looking for access by finding farms and offering to help reduce the rabbit population, kind of like asking for permission to hunt coyotes with the hopes of access later.

I would post your contact info at a coupe stores over there. There are some folks who would like deer killed off their farm. But they are very quiet about it because they live in enemy territory.  :chuckle:

Anyone see how they are going to notify hunters which properties participate in the $1000 payouts for access?

Is this a done deal or just a proposal by that goofball out there, Ruth Milner?

Loki...I "heard" them talking about this a few weeks ago on ESPN's The Outdoor Line....here is the WDFW press release:

I've seen the article. I don't think it will work... unless the landowner can choose who hunts. I would certainly discourage my neighbors from allowing a free-for-all....

I meet Wingaurd at a WWA meeting when he explained the private lands program for waterfowl. This appears to be an extension of the same program. I could see this being a boon for archers as Shooting a bow doesnt seem to concern as many folks as firearms do.

The waterfowl $ comes from the same source which is why  when waterfowling they had the survey cards about time spent, success, etc. My interactions with Rob were positive.

So, if I am understanding this, currently they can let their friends & family or any one they want to allow to hunt, but reading your post, it sounds like you would have them get paid and then still limit access to friends, family or only people they choose???

Sounds like they would have quite a bit of control over how many people, when they can hunt so hardly sounds like a free-for-all, unless I am missing something??  :dunno:

Blacktail, I'm saying there are a lot of slob hunters out there, sad but true, that I would not want hunting anywhere near me... one of the reasons I don't tend to hunt public land.  Just my  :twocents:

The private land system is hardly a free for all and it works very well.  Except perhaps for the “hunt by written permission” part which gets abused by the land owners.  The “hunt by reservation” system would work quite well there as it does all over the state.  WDFW knows exactly who is there and when and controls all aspects of the hunt.  I doubt if you will see any “feel free to hunt” spots open up on San Juan Island.
