Stupid mistake on my end resulted in my tag being filled on this little guy. Another year or 2 and he would’ve been a great bear. Good color, super fatty, way back in the Kettle crest. Here’s my list of things to make sure you don’t do it too.
1- a nice bear ran out in front of us and bailed into a ravine. I took pursuit with my 30-30 and when I saw a bear across the ravine I figured it was the same bear based solely off the fact it was a bear. Different color, way too far, wandering and feeding not booking it or even looking back. First bear musta been the mom and it was still in the creek bottom.
2- I was using my open sights and didn’t have my bino’s. Even traditional bow hunting I carry bino’s to make sure game is legal before a stalk. A single look with magnification at 150 yards would’ve showed the Mickey Mouse, brown, 1.5 year old.
3- my gut said don’t shoot! My gut said let it walk. I dunno why, I could hear rocks and such below but thought it was the raging creek. The bear had the wrong attitude for just being jumped. The color was different but I thought it was the setting sun. Just overall I didn’t like it.
But most of my hunting life has been filled with opportunities to take game and I always pass so I can keep the hunts going. This year we’re trying to fill freezers and I felt the pressure to bring home game and I just shot. I’ve practiced to 200 yards with my 30-30 and my range guesstimates are usually darn good. Had it at 150 which we ranged later and it was 157 yards. Dropped him in 1 shot which makes sense with his size now...
The pro’s of this though #1 lessons learned, #2 we’ve got some good meals, #3 one less predator. I still don’t feel good with it but I’m picking up my second tag tonight and will hopefully go forward with better judgement and never make such a bad call again.

Clean quick kill on a legal animal that is tagged and bagged and will be utilized.
Nice job.
-
That’s a tough go. I had a big sow and two cubs equal to that size at 20 yards this last weekend while scouting and almost shot, then saw them all and had to let walk. Kind of bitter sweet. You’ll find another. It’s like shooting a spike buck, it happens. I wouldn’t beat yourself up too much about it
-
Coulda shoulda. Still its a bear down to be respected and made good use of. No judgement here. Now go get another. Size can deceive your eyes. I know that for a fact.
-
No need to worry now that you can buy a second tag and get another bear.
Good shooting!
-
Looks like a bear to me.
-
Bear is a Bear! No suffering, good eats, it's all good! Trophy hunt with tag #2
-
I wouldn't feel bad, the bear will be utilized and there is one less predator out there, good job thinking through what you would do differently next time for yourself, but no reason to beat yourself up at all.
-
I took my daughters boyfriend out bear hunting last weekend, new hunter and never shot at any animals yet. We had a nice bear at 360 yards, the bear had no clue we were there. He shot just under the bear, the bear flipped and ran down hill, we thought he just shot his first bear! So excited..... till we saw it walking away, unhurt uphill about 2 minutes later. So, he would definitely trade stories with you! Every hunter out there misses or makes mistakes, you did neither, you legally took a bear! Good job, congrats and get that second tag!
-
A bear is a bear! Not a super easy animal to harvest. Don’t beat yourself up. Completely legal and will partially fill the freezer! Good luck with second tag!

It happens to the best of us. Good luck on your second tag.

At least we're not reading you claiming this is a 300lb'er and that knife in the pic is actually a machete !
Don't let it bother you too much just sharpen up your judgement skills and get back out there and get a few more !!
-
You had a good shot with a clean kill and saved dozens of fawn a year. Way to go! Nice bear down.
-
By the title I assumed you shot a sow with cubs. Absolutely zero reason to feel guilty on this one as far as I'm concerned.

Ouch. That stings!

This thread makes me happy. I'm glad we have the folks here that we do. This would have been a crap show if posted in any of the local Facebook groups.
Thank you guys for showing the respect you do.
Congrats on the bear. One less future fawn killer out there. It'll be good eats.

Go shoot the Sow, bring a friend in case the first one had a sibling! Good shootin'! I'd be happy with that bear

That's bigger the any bear I have harvested! which is 0! I did that with an antlerless elk tag one time.... elk flopped over like it was hit with a truck... I walk up and the trees it was next to got a lot smaller!! there was another elk behind it and they appeared to be the same size so I shot the first one up the hill. Its was by far the best tasting elk I've had.
-
Tracker, a lot of good comments here. You did OK. Be glad there are enough bears to see two of them so close together.
Deja vu for me, 'cause I did essentially the same thing as you did some 25 years ago in the fog. Saw a jumbo bear within 8 feet of me beside my pick-up. He bailed off of the edge of the logging road while I grabbed rifle, loaded and looked for him. I saw a bear below in the fog. It did not look right, seemed small. I hesitated a second, decided that it had to be the same bear and killed a young bear kicked out from his mother that year.
-
That hide will make a right fine set of winter undies. Good shot, good kill.
-
Nice work on the bear! In my eyes all bears are mostly the same. Smaller ones are cheaper to tan and easier to pack out tho. :chuckle: and less bear meat on them.
-
I wouldn't lose a minute of sleep over that bear. Good job
-
Dude - it died quick AND you got a quick packout!
Win win!
-
That is the perfect size to eat :cue: I love bear meat good job
-
Heck, I've seen posts where guys would have said it was 300+ lbs! I like your post, like your honesty, probably more closer to average than most guys 400 lb'er!
-
I see a dead bear, thats a win. If you want a big one just get a second tag. Next year if a bear that size happens to be what i call in, im shooting it.
-
That hide will make a right fine set of winter undies. Good shot, good kill.
Fir in or out?
Dead bear = dead bear man! Good job!
-
My buddy did the same thing some years back except his bear was smaller than yours. Sucks...
-
Its all in the camera angles. This is a 100lb bear. :chuckle:
-
Smaller bears just become bigger bears by killing fawns, you saved quite a few deer!
And got a few roasts out of it!
That hide will make a right fine set of winter undies. Good shot, good kill.
:yike:
Hair in of course!
$hit don’t stick to hair...... :o

I imagine the guy last year that shot that guy in the bushes when his buddies were making cougar noises feels even worse than you, hopefully. Know your target before pulling the trigger. Takes guts to admit to a mistake and post about it. Thank you for your public candor.
-
Well you guys sure know how to make someone feel better. Honestly was expecting some sorta flak.
And I’m planning to have a pillow or something made from it. The coat was amazing, already pretty full feeling too. My girlfriend said I should mess with my fur buyer and tell him I got a odd coyote. Really happy it wasn’t a sow with cubs, saw a mom with 3 just a mountain over in the spring.

I didn’t mean for that to come out bad if it did whoops. . In 2015, 30 min into opener of deer, I had a spike buck jump across the road in front of me. I instinctively shot without thinking anything other than it was legal. Nice work on the bear!!
-
To be honest I’m pretty sure I would have just pulled the trigger even if I knew the size. We get two tags - why not? It’s bonus meat. Kind of a fun skull next to the others. A few claw necklaces for the kids.
Shoot man I think you’ve got me talked into a pre made decision.
-
Veal bear. All good!!

Soft tans are always good!
-
Every predator kill is a good kill! Now go kill another one!
-
bearpaw was talking about his cub mount being the favorite mount in the house hold, might be cool to do a full body on that guy
-
Id like to see a pic of that
-
More bear than I have killed this year! Great job 👍
-
Id like to see a pic of that

I don’t see why you wouldn’t want to shoot a younger bear like that? I have eaten a few and I’m gladly take another young bear in the future. the meats the best there is.
-
Lol, still bigger than the bear I killed last year and I don't feel bad about him, 1 less bear to eat fawns :twocents:
-
dead bear is a good bear
-
Tracker0721, you are now solely responsible for the death of every cub you have inspired here today. They will be singing your praises at every bear BBQ for years to come. With two fall tags everyone will be killing cubs. Winter undies for all!

I was totally kidding, although I’ve shot a half dozen spikes!
-
Hey, if you have kids, they could take the hide to Build-A-Bear at the mall!!!
Kidding!!
-
Tracker, this is a great example of how not to do it.
You did everything right.

I shot about same size bear on my spring hunt in MT this year Bear is bear.

Nice job.
:yeah:
FWIW, I stalked a bear cub in GPW two years ago (because I'm a noob and didn't realize it was a cub in my scope) and passed on it. Saw a bear in the same spot, with the same color pattern the next year, and decided not to stalk it figuring I'd give it another year to "grow up." I still regret it.
Lessons learned and a humane, legal harvest. Good work.
-
If I ever bag one that small you can bet I'm getting a full body mount. Seen some cool ones.
-
Bears are hardest animal in the woods to judge. I shot one this spring that had some ground shrinkage :chuckle: I am getting to the point I almost prefer a smaller bear (within reason) just because they are easier to deal with and I think better eating or it seems like that to me. I don't need another bear mount or rug. I might be a little different because I really like the meat and 1 medium to even smaller bear is perfect for that. My kid usually gets one too so that's all we need. Congrats on getting some meat and Go get another one
-
You saved a lot of fawns and calves.
Legal harvest of a predator Plus it should be tasty!

By the title I assumed you shot a sow with cubs. Absolutely zero reason to feel guilty on this one as far as I'm concerned.
:yeah:
-
I did a similar thing, Bear was 25 yards away through a 4X scope. Looked big until I got to it. So I figured its the only Bear I could afford to do a full body mount on

how much did it cost to have the cat mounted? mine has been getting on my nerves
-
It’s good meat in the freezer. I don’t see the need to feel bad.
