Looks like rain and moderate temps in the high country. Me and my son are making the trek friday morning for five days of hiking with guns. Really looking forward to being wet and stinky tired and sore and an all around great safe time had by all. Good luck shoot straight and enjoy it while you can.

Yeah, should be fun. Definitely triple checking the rain gear.

First rule of the high hunt is we don’t talk about the high hunt.

Good luck!

I think he was just joking...
Back in the good days I would go a week in the high country without seeing anyone... nowadays I don't bother...so thus the we don't talk about high hunt humour.

Headed in Friday Morning and coming out Saturday the 21st. Good Luck Everyone!

Going to be another second weekend year for me for high buck. Doing the archery elk/deer backpack hunt in Oregon later this week, so won't get up for high buck hunt until the 20th.
I'm fatter than I normally am this time of year due to not being in as good of shape as I prefer due to some nagging little injuries, so going to be some hard miles.

i know what he meant.

Biggest reason I don’t talk about the high hunt is because I haven’t done the high hunt in a few years. Not much to talk about from me. Amateur hour over here. I’ll be high hunting in the Blues in a few weeks. We can talk about that if anyone wants to. Specifically looking for large mule deer bucks tied to trees.

Still seeing if I can squeeze it in between work and home projects. But I am hoping to get up for a few nights. Or if time doesn’t allow for that I do have a multi season tag and I may end up taking my bow and a shotgun north east looking for white tails and turkeys for a day or two

My older brother and I just came off the mountain from a high hunt 5,000 feet up. The weather was absolutely brutal thunder and lightning like we have never heard and seen before. Lots of good bear sign. A few elk and deer sign not much though.

Not sure I’m going up this year, with taking 3 weeks off in October for my BC Moose Hunt I’m not sure I can get the anymore time off. Good luck, hopefully it’s not a crap show like last year.

my knee and shoulder are ruined, I'm getting older and fatter...so heck yah I'm going. Might not have many trips like this left in me

Good thing for friends to help out

The deer are there hunting hard is the key. A lot of hunters but I think success depend on perseverance. I see a lot of guys sleeping mid day in their tents when it's raining and moving around too much the deer are there just keeping your eyes glued to your glass and having a spot with animals eventually you get your chance and dont blow it like I did last year. Plus the memories I made with my son the last 6 years are priceless and I wouldn't trade them for a bone and Crockett buck.

It's still a bit up in the air, but I think I might actually be able to go for the last weekend of season. I started a business in April so I've had very little time or brainpower to aim at hunting.
Since I've had no scouting opportunities and basically zero time to e-scout, I'm thinking right now I'll just head to my usual (occasionally stupid-crowded) trailhead.
Good luck everybody! I'll be carrying an orange Osprey pack and a stainless Savage 16. Say hi if we see each other!

Making my first trip in this year with a buddy. . Going in Saturday for 4 days. New to it so looking forward to the excursion. Fingers crossed I don’t step on anyone’s toes. Best wishes to all!
-
Favorite hunt of the year! Taking my 14yo daughter...trying to walk the fine line of accurately representing how difficult it can be and not completely turning her off of it 😬

This will be my second solo hunt. I ended up with a cute legal buck last yr. I pulled the trigger to make my first solo trip a success. pack in sucks, heavy pack out really sucks but thats why we love it. Because if it was easy everyone would be there. Im holding out this yr for bigger.
The "shaved yeti" will be somewhere up there too. Traveling around like gravity aint no thing. He can chime in if he likes.
Post pics of your hunts . Success or not we love to see them.
Now...
Lets get it on!

That is what draws some people to it.
If it is just about meat, it is always cheaper to buy it at the store.

Headed up solo tomorrow through iron gate. Not because I've had success there, just want to check out new terrain. I'll be the guy in a duck hunting rain jacket and KUIU pack cursing in a 1 man green tent held up with trekking poles. Not bringing any booze, but I'll trade you some homemade jerky for some ;)
-
How far are you going in. I went in there solo one time very nice country super cold at night. I only went in about 6 miles saw some deer just as you get into the open before the big rock on the right side you can hunt up to the ridge tons of beds and great views once you get up top
-
Well that was a short lived hunt! In and out same day. Thread to follow.

Trying to remember......was it @saylean that a year(s) ago stuck a dandy buck on a high hunt with a trad bow?

Wasn’t me...I’ve only shot compound

Hmmmmmm. Carp? Its a few years back.

I have shot a few with a trad bow but not in the early high hunt. I know bone has killed a few dandies early not sure if they were high hunt though?
-
Yes! It was bone @boneaddict that stuck one vs shot one with a lens. Was a good read and recap.
-
I’ve done both, hunting it with a bow when I used to buy the modern tag and hunt with a bow, and of course just hunting the high country with my bow in archery season with the multi tag. But yes, I’ve gotten an occasional good buck with the Trad bow.

Quick report on Iron Gate this year. Showed up at trailhead @ 5:00pm on 9/20 w 20 rigs in the lot. Probably 8 camps spread between Sunny Pass and in Horseshoe Basin. Only heard 1 shot in 4 days of being out there... lots of does and a few 2 points, though I found a hide in a back basin so someone must have connected earlier in the week. Screwed up a stalk on a black bear... good times and beautiful country!
Oh, and anyone with a moose tag, some guys that camped near the parking lot one night said a moose strolled through their camp. There's lots of moose sign on the trail (including fresh tracks) between the parking lot and about 2 miles in...though it's pretty thick regen/burn so would be difficult to hunt.
