I have never hunted southwest washington and not sure how to find public access?

How far south are you coming? there is a pile of public land down here.

Not sure yet, trying to get some good direction for elk for modern season.

Tons of national forest land. What part of SW WA do you want to be in?

Gifford Pinchot has A ton of land to elk hunt

Depends on what is considered SW Washington. Most of lands West of I -5 are under lock and key.

The hunting is not all that great any more in the GP, but there are still a few around.

one of the few places left in the state where it is 3 point minmum with a legitimate chance at an OTC branched bull.

There are elk almost everywhere on public land north of the Lewis River in SW Washington and west of Mt. Adams. Just take your pick. I think there are 3 herds in what I'd consider SW WA. Gifford Pinchot has absolutely loads of public land to hunt and like any elk hunt, you have to find em. State land is good too, and there is plenty, just not anything like the Pinchot.
