Title: Malaga youth hunt help
Post by: GHETTO GUIDE on September 16, 2019, 08:59:14 AM
Howdy,

I have two boys ages 10 and 12 who drew the Malaga cow hunt as partners.  We live on the wet side so Im not super familiar with the unit.  The odds  and success rate looked good and it had a long season so it was our last choice on the application.

The boys have taken one doe so far and no elk yet.

My questions are:

Is it mostly private or is there a good deal of public land?
Is there a "better" part of the unit we should focus on?
Can I get them within 250 yds in this area?  We hunt hard / hike a lot.
Travel trailer camping this time of year or motel it?  I don't want to deal with freezing pipes . hahh.

If anyone wants to help out with leads or property access we would be grateful.  Id gladly trade some fish or fishing trips in exchange.

I don't have the tag.  Only the boys.

Aaron.

The unit is mostly private but there is plenty of public land ( make sure you are using onyx ) as for the elk they will be scattered throughout the unit at all elevations, the terrain is fairly easy with open grasslands at lower elevations to thick timber up higher. What season did they draw?

Get ahold of the Wdfw biologist in Wenatchee,  they usually have a list of contacts to get permission from, other then that I would say focus on the state ground along kingsberry road above the orchards. Jump off ridge road and the Malaga Alcoa highway. Lots of state ground out there. Iv has success all throughout the unit so no real definite spot. Hope for snow!

Thank you .  This paints a better picture.  They have the Nov 1 to Dec 31st modern tag.

During that time the majority of the cows will be low, open grasslands and sage brush, should be a great hunt for them

Were actually headed over this weekend.  Iv priced hauling my travel trailer over and back vs leaving it there for a month .  My plan as of now is to hotel it for a out $50 to $60 night.

We have untill the end of the year to make it happen.  With kids school and sports Im hoping to make a few trips to minimize missing school n such.  Although missing school for hunting is acceptable to us,  hahha.

Kids are jacked.   Ill post up pics of the trip.  Iv made a few contacts trying to prep before getting there so hopefully it all works out.
