The Opener for Huns, Ca. quail, and chukar is this coming Saturday, Oct. 5th. Any of you have any big plans?
Me...I may just stay close to home and hunt quail and a few Huns or drive a bit Northwest for better Hun hunting. I'd love to drive South and hunt chukars, but my old back won't forgive me if I gave that a try.

I'm sure my son and I will be out for a walk somewhere looking for quail...
-
The wife has plans in Walla Walla, so I'll be out there with my Shorthair pup for his first real hunt.
I have zero experience in that area, so would be very open to any suggestions or recommendations.

Pretty awesome weather for the opener. I don’t think rattling snakes are going to be much of a concern in the morning.
-
Two full days of chasing chukar and huns...

Jegar,
Do you think they're crawling all over the place? :dunno: After spending 15 years chasing Rabbits through the Sagebrush I have YET to see a Rattler...

LOL
I don’t hunt sage brush or have any idea where you hunt but I’m happy for you that you don’t have snakes in your part of the country. I do have lot’s of snakes where I hunt and have to wait for cold weather before I don’t have to worry about them.

WHERE ARE THEY CRAWLING AT?
-
Just last week I saw two in Idaho, one south of Salmon and one north of Salmon . I have seen two turkey hunting in E. Wa. They are out there

Myself, I stay away from rocky areas; especially on a warm or warming day. I generally hunt in the AM and quit prior to the arrival of the heat.

I had a bird dog bit by a rattler right in front of me on a late October morning that was 20 degrees. You never know where and when they will be. I usually wait until November to hunt Chukar but occasionally I'll get an itch to go earlier.

what happened to your dog ?

He was a buddies dog. My dog was really close by as well but a bit further out. We weren't sure what had happened at first. He went about a minute further then he started standing really wide legged with his head hung down and drooling. He fell down by the time I got to him. We carried him to the truck and rushed him to a vet about an hour and a half away. He spent the night at the vet and survived to hunt the next year. He had a little muscle loss in the leg at the bite location but that was about it. That particular vet said he sees about 30 bites a year and he swore by the rattle snake vaccine. I have gotten it every year since with my dogs. He also said that dogs that get bit in the face or where they get hit directly in a vein usually don't make it unless you have some meds with you or they have been vaccinated. I also carry a kit with some shots of the medicine he recommended. I can't remember what it is off hand but if anyone cares I can look it up. He said the vaccine buys you a couple more hours until you can get them to a vet. We were in Montana so we are almost always a couple hours from a good vet.

Did a late morning hunt. Went to one of my normal spots and did the 1.5 mile circle. Ended the hunt with 1 quail and 1 hun on 3 shots.
Was really weird. Only saw the one quail, all by itself. Never seen that before unless of course I've already jumped the covey. This was a lone bird. My dog and I made many circles and passed through the area where the single jumped but could never find anymore. That's just weird to me. Then the huns, was only a covey of 3 which is abnormal as well.

Saw some birds but ended up with one hun. And scared the bejesus out of myself with a rattlesnake. Turns out I shouldn't have followed the birds down that rocky/cliffy slope that faced the sun. I'll be back for the rest of the birds on a colder day.
-
Got two limits of chukars this morning only ran into one rattler.
-
Didnt see any rattlers, but did run across two little garner snakes. Figured with the freezing temps around here the snakes would have been sleeping already
-
Business as usual for two of us.
-
Nicely done!
-
Summer farm dog jumped right back into pro role without a problem. Rock solid points on tight holding birds, and not another human to be seen.
-
NICE OPENING HARVEST GUYS!
-
We didn't limit, my son and I got on a few quail. Was a great outing!
