Who is going? Looked at the calendar and realized we're heading east in five weeks to join the rest of the non-res population lol
-
Leaving on Oct 13th for Montana Antelope. Then again around Nov 15th for deer
-
Heading over Nov. 8 through Nov. 17 for deer.
The weather has me a bit worried.

The weather has me a bit worried.
Pretty much when we'll be there. Going to Broadus, this time. Dunno what weather will be in five weeks. It's already low 40's there now.
-
will be there in western montana over thanksgiving week
-
11th -21st Broadus also
-
Nov 6-10, maybe a few extra days on one side or another. I'm taking my brother on his first big game hunt at the legendary forky honey hole.
-
Sounds like a huntwa meet in greet in broadus area...
-
maybe we should meet one night at the stockmens club
-
maybe we should meet one night at the stockmens club
I'd be game to meet up. Never hunted Broadus area before so will be a fun adventure...gumbo and all
-
Unit 400 for me and the boys Nov10th-16th. In that area of Montana the season is only three weeks instead of five like the rest of the state so its the last week of the season. It could be cold boys!!!! Something is telling me that!!!
-
17th till Thanksgiving eve for us , Not Broadus though
-
There are no deer in Broadus :chuckle:
-
6-16th in gmu 705 :chuckle:r
-
Nov 15-22, Braudus area as well. Last year it snowed on us for 4dys straight and the coldest day was -3°. I’ve never been so cold.
-
More huntwa hunters in broadus then deer for sure
-
Reminder for those heading out that way about game transportation laws in CWD areas. http://fwp.mt.gov/fishAndWildlife/diseasesAndResearch/diseases/chronicWastingDisease/management.html
-
Nov 15-22 for me
-
11th-21st for me. Not in Broadus.
-
Been here for three weeks and will stay until Thanksgiving.
-
Oct 31st through Nov 9th for a mixed bag hunt of birds and bucks.
-
Heading to Fort peck reservoir to hunt from the boat again, Fun times
-
November 8th-20th for my group. We’ll get it done!
-
There will b 3 of us in s.e. montana 8-16th. Then I get a week to myself. I drop the 2 of them at the billings airport then I'm on my own, the 16- 22. That is if i can hold off pulling the trigger the 1st week.
-
Nov 16-26 but not the Broadus area! Good luck guys, this is my first trip!!!
-
Western Montana for me. Rattling mountain whitetails!
-
I think we'll probably do the drive and glass thing until we can't sit in the truck anymore. Depends on roads though. Then get out and walk. Wanting to see a lot of bucks, hope to have opportunities to chase several bucks and finally connect with one.
This is only our second trip.
From what I've gathered, hunters who see a lot of bucks generally do so from their truck and cover a lot of ground in the process. Getting out and walking seems to limit yourself to just one area.

You would be correct. That's what we do , when we find one we want then me make a stalk.
-
We’re heading out Nov 8. We usually see quite a few from the truck, but see waaaayyyyy more once we get out and start covering the country
-
Ill be leaving this Thursday and I'll stay until I get one, get tired of looking or Thanksgiving arrives which ever comes first! Good thing is I have meat in the freezer so I can shop awhile, maybe I'll finally get a good one :chuckle:
Oh yeah not broadus
-
Not hunting the leased area with Huntinfool this year?
-
Where we are at, north of Choteau the Whitetail are already starting the rut. Saw some very nice shooters yesterday. However I am holding out for a freak I have been watching for past month.
-

We haven’t had the lease for about 4 years now
-
I really am hoping the rut is cranking in western montana when we get there on the 23rd. :hunter:

Breeding part of the rut by then. What area will you be in?

We will be near superior so not far from border up in mtns

Saw chasing in that sector a week ago.

Heading out on a first ever MT deer hunt solo. I’m planning on leaving the night of 11/15 after work and hopefully get to at least Spokane. Probably just sleep in the cab of the truck for a bit and then push through the next morning. I’ll be hunting 11/16-11/23. Not looking for any monsters, just to have a good time, see some animals and hopefully get a descent buck. Oh and I won’t be in Broadus either. Got some good intel from another member here about a different area to hunt away from the broadus crowds.
So it sounds like driving and glassing is the best strategy huh? I was just marking up my onx with BMA access areas. Most look like walk in only in my area.
-
15th here as well. I’ve hear the rut is on the n north central but whats the status in SE? I have two weeks till the hunt and don’t want to miss the rut.
-
The rut isn't on. Pre-rut activities combined with cold weather and snow making them move more and more visible have everyone thinking it's on. It will be the same time frame as every year. Daylight dictates that.
-
Good copy. Glad to hear and that’s why I go late Nov👍
-
Perfect
Leaving Friday
Solo also
And I will be in Broadus for a couple weeks or until I see something I like
Ha

So when would you say that is? We like that week of the 10th. They seem to be really fired up every year.
-
Always seems to be the week before thanksgiving from my experience.

Anytime from now untill the week before Thanksgiving should be fantastic.
-
Another thing to remember is that you can't time the rut by Thanksgiving. Last year it was the 22nd. This year it is the 28th. Almost a while week difference! I normally take Thanksgiving week off to hunt whitetails. It helps save vacation time because of the paid holiday. This year I had to schedule the week before because it will be post rut the next week.
-
We hunted Broadus last year and we camped while it was 1 degree in the mornings and it was a blast you just need to dress right! The horrible part was the 500 miles of icy death roads on the way home! We were puckered up for 10 hours but the stop at Teaser’s outside of Bozeman made it worth it! Have fun!

I don't know what would be worse, ice or the mud. Probably ice
We head over in a week. Weather so far looks mild for broadus area. Could change though.

Leaving Thursday for SW MT deer and elk combo trip -cant freakin wait

Agreed with this. For me, my work schedule allows trips after nov 20th so I try to take advantage of thanksgiving. We are leaving on the 23rd and hunting last week of season. Late to post rut activity is what I am expecting

This is what I love about western Montana hunting... not as many “quality” animals and absolutely no goons from Washington. Gotta hunt like a goat in nut deep snow flakes- live off mountain house garbage like a granola muncher headed up the PCT for weeks at a time in hopes of possibly getting the chance to pull the trigger on that majestic 17 total inch B&C forky muley buck.
-
How does a goat in nut deep snow hunt? Why would a granola eater eat man house?
-
The point was I’ve yet to see anyone from Washington where I hunt in Montana. . It not easy. So therefore I’m content.

I’ve also hunted up the joe in your neighborhood too as well as in the CDA’s. The problem I had with Idaho was the idiots from Washington I tried to get away from Were there too. Luckily there’s enough roadless turf in there it thinned them out a little.

Friday cannot come soon enough. I am very excited to be headed that way the end of this week.

O.K., that was funny! :chuckle:

Well next FRI going home to MT see some Family and Friends and shoot some deer :hello:
-
I leave next friday and can’t contain myself. I’m super stoked. Just gotta get through a couple days of work and then a week of chasin mulies in the rut.
-
Yeah dude, I leave on Friday too! I’m suuuuper stoked that the weather warmed up just a bit in the area I’m going. Low 20’s for the overnight lows and mid to low 30’s for the daytime highs and so far no rain/snow in the forecast. I was a little worried about negative degree temps. So stoked, first time hunting mule deer in MT!

The colder it is the more the deer have to be out finding food to stay warm. Makes hunting better.
-
Well last year when I was there it was -3°, so 35° sounds better. As long as the bucks are still out chasing does.
-
I’m here ☺️
-
Gonna be a gnarly storm tonight.
Up to 9” in eastern Montana.

Ah gotcha! Makes perfect sense.. not gonna lie, I was a little worried though about the sub-zero temps I’ve heard so much about..
-
Timberstalker, Thats just a light dusting, compared to Septembers storm. 32" here in Bynum and 81" at our Browning lease.
-
I'm in s.e. mt not a lot of rut sign. Need to b careful getting off roads into the gumbo. Where we r at a few more hunters then we r used to. Still seeing quite a few bucks just nothing we've been willing to shoot yet. Got till next friday so we will hold out for a mature buck.
-
Lots of bucks chasing single does, but nothing too serious.
Haven’t found a great buck yet but We are here through Friday.
-
We’re passing through ID on the way to Broadus area for the week.
-
Good luck out there guys. Looking forward to seeing pics of all the MT bucks from this year!

Took us 16 hrs including gas stops and slow traffic because of snow. My truck said -1 east of Ashland.
-
I see more deer in a day over here than I see in the whole season over there
-
Done and yes the tags in my pocket notched
Taped on at truck
-
dandy buck
-
Beauty of a buck right there MadMax.
-
Dirt nappy.
-
Thanks I’ve never seen so many deer at the taxidermist in my life place was like a nightclub this morning
-
Party on.
-
Filled one tag. Seen more nice 4 points next to the road on private land at sunset than during the day on blm, trekking back away from the roads on foot.
-
Any sign of CWD at all? Are you having them tested?
-
Yes. Oct 30 through Nov 19...2020
Just got the vacation all lined up! Never hunted in MT, but in 7 days deer hunting North of Winthrop this year I heard ZERO shots.
Not going to Brodus that I know of.
-
We’ve killed 3 bucks and 1 doe so far. 1 buck and 3 does left. Was -16 yesterday morning. 9 degrees and 30mph winds blowing snow sideways when I shot mine. 375 yards dropped him where he stood! Bucks are rutting hard where we’re at. Here’s mine.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191113/c0ce44b79c462adda1e9548d577ecd66.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191113/dde39af6ce102fc8aee183a1a6e338c7.jpg)

Why does it have to warm up when I'm there? 😥(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191113/6d645a4679c0b8f8108da220f3714cf8.jpg)

Headed over 3am tomorrow morning. Couple days of warm weather then looks to cool down a little.
-
It’s muddy
-
I’m here in SE. muddy dirt roads. 48°. Only 2-3pt mulies with does. Saw a young 3pt w 10 does. That many dies should have a mature dominant buck w em, not a 2-3yr old buck. No big boys.
The whitetail are rutting hard. No sign of mature mulie bucks. Never experienced it lime this here before.
-
Got one yesterday morning. Warm weather today definitely slowed things down in the area we are
-
Nice bucks guys , I'm sitting in a motel in Missoula got a late start.
-
Any sign of CWD at all? Are you having them tested?
:yeah: :yeah: ???
-
This was the only wide buck we saw in 5 days. We're hunting public Butte country in SE. Warmed up like crazy after first day there. No groups of does to speak of in the buttes. They all appeared to be in the fields (private). Did scare up a couple decent ones last day saw them run away single does.
-
Been in s.e. montana for 8 days now. On friday the deer were rutting hard. My brother having missed a a nice 4x3 muley took an old gnarly whitetail, his best to date. Was a thick horned 4x4 not especially big but an old deer past its prime. My dad passed on many bucks and ate his tag. That was by choice he wanted a large mature mule deer or nothing. I've still got wyoming and montana tags in my pocket and now that I'm by myself I'll try and get those filled here soon. The mud was as bad as I've ever seen it. Our group helped 1 truck who was stuck and when a guy refused to listen to good advice well we politely refused to help..... a did see a huge 3x2 mule deer one of the biggest body deer I'd ever seen. He was 50 ft off the road on public land. I did not want to shoot a deer just driving g the main highway but if I see him where I think he was going I'll take him.
-
My son shot a nice buck a couple days ago. 5x6 (6x7 if you count eyeguards ). I missed a stud of a buck yesterday. Seen him today at 375 yards but never presented a good shot. I have 3 more days to try and get him. Passed up 5 bucks today . Can’t get my mind off the big guy.
-
This is the buck I’m after. Missed him yesterday.

The only time of year that I second-guess my choice of career after retiring from the Army is November when I watch these Montana rut threads... I used to do this hunt. As a teacher, I just can't get the time off... :'(

I feel you there. My busy time starts mid October with first deadline of November 20th >:(

Finally found a decent buck. 510yds, head on chest shot. Found 200grn eld-x bullet’s outter copper jacket on off side hide while skinning. Gonna weigh jacket when i get home and see how much mass it lost. .300RUM did it’s job nonetheless. He went 7yds. He was with one doe. Smaller bucks have the big groups of does.
-
Congrats, that will make a nice European mount
-
You guys are killin it. I’m here now and have been for the last two days with 4 more to go. Passed on my first legal buck ever! Didn’t think I’d ever do that, but it was a smallish 3 pt and I just wasn’t ready for my solo MT to be over yet! Definitely been an adventure! I’ve never seen mud like this before. Couple close calls, but so far haven’t gotten stuck yet. Seen plenty who have. Tomorrow is a new day! Good luck and be safe!
-
Good luck Tbob. Ya, dirt roads are muddy and that stuff is no joke. Be careful in it. Good luck. Binos and spotting scopes are your best friend. Glass glass and glass more. You will find him👍
-
Haven’t hunted w my son in ten years. Last time he was 11 and now he’s 21. He has never shot a buck...only two blacktail does. I was proud that he passed on some bucks, including this one yesterday, but after seeing it again this morning he decided to take it.
I stopped the truck and he got out and set up. I ranged the buck and yelled out yardage to him. The buck was at 250yds but he was chasing a doe and wound up at 350yds. The buck was facing left and there was a 15mph wind from left to right. I told him to hold left, so he held on the front of the buck’s chest and let the .300 win mag bark. The buck didn’t act like he was hit, instead he ran towards doe but only made it a out 10yds and piled up.
After hi-fives and hugs we went and found his buck. Perfect shot right behind the shoulder. So proud!
-
That’s awesome! Congrats!
-
It’s a target rich environment for sure
Nice job nice deer
-
Welp were tagged out . I shot a nice big 4x4 with eye guards and trash around the bases , buddy a heavy 4x5 with a kicker . Staying 2 more days to look at more area and deer .
-
How about some pictures?
