Pretty much when we'll be there. Going to Broadus, this time. Dunno what weather will be in five weeks. It's already low 40's there now.

Wanting to see a lot of bucks, hope to have opportunities to chase several bucks and finally connect with one.

This is only our second trip.

From what I've gathered, hunters who see a lot of bucks generally do so from their truck and cover a lot of ground in the process. Getting out and walking seems to limit yourself to just one area.

You would be correct. That's what we do , when we find one we want then me make a stalk.

Post by: Tbob on November 02, 2019, 11:06:48 AM: Heading out on a first ever MT deer hunt solo. I’m planning on leaving the night of 11/15 after work and hopefully get to at least Spokane. Probably just sleep in the cab of the truck for a bit and then push through the next morning. I’ll be hunting 11/16-11/23. Not looking for any monsters, just to have a good time, see some animals and hopefully get a descent buck. Oh and I won’t be in Broadus either. Got some good intel from another member here about a different area to hunt away from the broadus crowds.
So it sounds like driving and glassing is the best strategy huh? I was just marking up my onx with BMA access areas. Most look like walk in only in my area.

Anytime from now untill the week before Thanksgiving should be fantastic.

Almost a while week difference! I normally take Thanksgiving week off to hunt whitetails. It helps save vacation time because of the paid holiday. This year I had to schedule the week before because it will be post rut the next week.

The horrible part was the 500 miles of icy death roads on the way home! We were puckered up for 10 hours but the stop at Teaser’s outside of Bozeman made it worth it! Have fun!

I don't know what would be worse, ice or the mud. Probably ice

We head over in a week. Weather so far looks mild for broadus area. Could change though.

Agreed with this. For me, my work schedule allows trips after nov 20th so I try to take advantage of thanksgiving. We are leaving on the 23rd and hunting last week of season. Late to post rut activity is what I am expecting

Gotta hunt like a goat in nut deep snow flakes- live off mountain house garbage like a granola muncher headed up the PCT for weeks at a time in hopes of possibly getting the chance to pull the trigger on that majestic 17 total inch B&C forky muley buck.

I’ve also hunted up the joe in your neighborhood too as well as in the CDA’s. The problem I had with Idaho was the idiots from Washington I tried to get away from Were there too. Luckily there’s enough roadless turf in there it thinned them out a little.

Why is this too warm?
The colder it is the more the deer have to be out finding food to stay warm. Makes hunting better.

Still seeing quite a few bucks just nothing we've been willing to shoot yet. Got till next friday so we will hold out for a mature buck.

Took us 16 hrs including gas stops and slow traffic because of snow. My truck said -1 east of Ashland.

Was -16 yesterday morning. 9 degrees and 30mph winds blowing snow sideways when I shot mine. 375 yards dropped him where he stood! Bucks are rutting hard where we’re at. The whitetail are rutting hard. No sign of mature mulie bucks. Never experienced it lime this here before.

No groups of does to speak of in the buttes. They all appeared to be in the fields (private). Did scare up a couple decent ones last day saw them run away single does.

My brother having missed a a nice 4x3 muley took an old gnarly whitetail, his best to date. Was a thick horned 4x4 not especially big but an old deer past its prime. My dad passed on many bucks and ate his tag. That was by choice he wanted a large mature mule deer or nothing. I've still got wyoming and montana tags in my pocket and now that I'm by myself I'll try and get those filled here soon. The mud was as bad as I've ever seen it. Our group helped 1 truck who was stuck and when a guy refused to listen to good advice well we politely refused to help..... a did see a huge 3x2 mule deer one of the biggest body deer I'd ever seen. He was 50 ft off the road on public land. I did not want to shoot a deer just driving g the main highway but if I see him where I think he was going I'll take him.

Seen him today at 375 yards but never presented a good shot. I have 3 more days to try and get him. Passed up 5 bucks today . Can’t get my mind off the big guy.

Gonna weigh jacket when i get home and see how much mass it lost. .300RUM did it’s job nonetheless. He went 7yds. He was with one doe. Smaller bucks have the big groups of does.

Didn’t think I’d ever do that, but it was a smallish 3 pt and I just wasn’t ready for my solo MT to be over yet! Definitely been an adventure! I’ve never seen mud like this before. Couple close calls, but so far haven’t gotten stuck yet. Seen plenty who have. Tomorrow is a new day! Good luck and be safe!

Post by: Mulie87 on November 18, 2019, 07:42:27 PM: Haven’t hunted w my son in ten years. Last time he was 11 and now he’s 21. He has never shot a buck...only two blacktail does. I was proud that he passed on some bucks, including this one yesterday, but after seeing it again this morning he decided to take it.

I stopped the truck and he got out and set up. I ranged the buck and yelled out yardage to him. The buck was at 250yds but he was chasing a doe and wound up at 350yds. The buck was facing left and there was a 15mph wind from left to right. I told him to hold left, so he held on the front of the buck’s chest and let the .300 win mag bark. The buck didn’t act like he was hit, instead he ran towards doe but only made it a out 10yds and piled up.

After hi-fives and hugs we went and found his buck. Perfect shot right behind the shoulder. So proud!
