Post by: Billy74 on November 03, 2019, 12:30:15 PM
Mother in law is asking about xmas lists.  Ive been wanting a good rechargeable headlamp.  What are some good ones? Looking for the usual: run time, brightness, red light option etc.  id love one i dont have to remove batteries and can just plug in directly to USB plug.

Nitecore HC30 1000 Lumens LED Headlamp Plus NL1834R

Great headlamp. You do have to remove the battery to charge, but it’s the best one I have found.

Tagging along. Was just wondering about this. I've had a dozen different cheapo headlamps and I think it may be time to upgrade as well.

Noting it does not have red light option, but it has firefly modes, which are very low light modes.

Petzl Reactik.

That is what I would buy, I've owned a dozen headlamps and Petzl are hands down my favorites.

I did pick up a cheapie just to use to find the duck blind and it works good so far.  I don't have high hopes of handing it down, but it does make a bunch of light.

Been happy with my Fenix HM65R, but it doesn't have a red light.

I picked up a danforce recently and have been really happy with it. It checks all of your boxes except the red light.

I know I’m a little late for an Xmas gift list but my recommendation would be the Fenix H60LR. Max lumens up to 950 and has 6 different brightness modes to include a red light. I’m in the elevator trade and work in low levels of light most of the day. This is my go to for work and in the woods.

Why would people use the red light option?  I've had it on some of my lamps but just never used it.

It’s not visible over long distances, or you’re in a tent and don’t want to blow your buddies eyes out. I use it as much or more than the regular white light! It also saves your night vision.

I don't like using a light if at all possible so I like to toggle on the red light when I need it and off when I don't and then don't end up having to readjust my eyes constantly. If you run with your light on all the time I don't know if it's as critical.

Just another note on the red light. It doesn't startle animals like a white light does. I use one regularly to check on the livestock at night. A creature doesn't have to adjust to darkness after being in red light. Try a red spotlight for predators!

Hitting the trail before first light, or after sunset, the red lens option is way better than white, and does not blowout your night vision.
Nothing more annoying than seeing people with their white flashlight or headlamp swinging wildly in the dark while hiking before first light.

After working under my Zero turn the other day, I got totally frustrated how narrow the beam on most headlamps are when working on vehicles. I have a few and they work great on the trail and in normal situations.
I looked at a bunch at Lowes and Home Depot, and found this Husky that has a wide beam that works great for working on vehicles. And it is pretty inexpensive at $14.97

The beam is almost twice as wide as the all the rest I own. Lights up a vehicle pretty well so I do not have to keep turning my head to get the beam where i want it.

That's cheap enough to have several stashed around.

I actually have a couple of these guys as they mount great on a hardhat and they are pretty awesome lights. They only cost $20 on Amazon and have a variable focus beam on them just like those Atomic flashlights on the infomercials. It focus' out to about 100yds pretty well and has that LED square pattern when it's turned all the way out. It is not built to be dropped though. They are made pretty light weight with threads from aluminum to plastic and that part seems to break if you drop it hard enough. But hey, it's $20...
