Happy Sat. Leaving Friday to hunt the last 4 days up near Colville. I was not there last year because I was helping my partner fill his quality pogue tag. Was wondering if anyone is seeing any good pre rut activity?
-
Nothing too exciting yet.........

On X maps will tell you everything you need to know about the rut..

Their article gives a good (generic) basic description, but by no means are those dates hard and fast for everywhere in the whitetails range, especially in ne wa.
One thing for sure, hunt when you can and dont worry about anything but staying focused.

That was a joke :)

A buddy over there sent me pictures of fresh rubs and a scrape from the other day.

I’ll remember that :chuckle:

Right now they are in the chasing phase. I see more bucks with the does now, the bucks are feeding and following and chasing. I saw 3 different bucks at it last night doing this. The does are coming out waiting and then a buck shows up and then they play hard to get. This is a great time to be out because any day now they will be locked up.
-
Pre rut is on for sure. We killed two bucks this weekend and both were stinky and one neck swollen. Lots of scrapes around but not much chasing yet. Should get better each day
-
And about 90% of what people are seeing are 1-3 yr old bucks chasing . It’s the 4.5 and older that show around nov 18 and more specifically nov 20-24 is the best time in most areas.
-
Right on huntnnw, hence the season closing on the 19th every year now!
-
No......the season closes to accomodate the rifle permits in the units.......thats when it changed.
-
I shot a buck on the Saturday at 10:00am, as it was sparring with another buck with two does nearby. It was only a 2 year old deer though. As huntnnw said, the big ones aren't moving too much yet.

There wasn't rifle rut permits at least in 121 until they went to the point system. Late buck used to open thanksgiving day the last season for that was 1984 after that they have been closing it between the 19 and the 22nd.

Late archery was nov 20 opener for a long time . Then they took it away for 5 measly rifle permits. Those 5 days were the archery season it was the bread and butter . One of the reasons I quit bowhunting Whitetails . Archery guys get maybe 2 days of dwindling rut activity now.

They still have a Nov 20th opener in some of the SE units. I'm heading over to 178 this weekend to check cams. I hope to be sitting in my stand on the opener.
-
I’m planning on heading down to 178 for the 20th opener too. Are the whiteys in the river/creek bottoms, mulies up higher? Kinda hoping to get on a mule deer. Any help would be great never hunted that unit.
-
Heading over Thur. My season ends 11/19 so want to hunt the last 4-5 days. Hope the older bucks will be out & about looking for love. :hunter:
-
I have a modern permit for the Pougue Unit 233. Hopefully I’ve timed my hunt well with the rut. I’ll be hunting it 11/16 to 11/20 with rain showers in the forecast.

178 is primarily private. There are a couple areas that are feel free to hunt or state. I have seen a mix of both mulies and whities that share the same terrain. The whities are spookier for sure. Make sure you have a cougar tag in your pocket.

I have a cougar tag and would love to notch it. I’ve secured some private land to hunt and use OnX for guidance. Thanks for the feedback and good luck to you next week!

Saw there was a antlerless elk season , but looks like a gotta know someone unit .

Yup, fortunately I know someone. Not a lot of elk on my cams but they wander through periodically. Hopefully one will wander past my stand while I'm waiting for a decent buck. What is a good attractant for both deer and elk??? been using apples but open to suggestions.
-
Decent bucks showed this week, first in over a month, all glued to does.
Have had garbs, grain and apples side by side, garbs go first apples last.

What is a garb?

deer hammered our wet cob and alfalfa cubes

I put out a bag of cubes in mid October but haven't checked the cams for action. Going down tomorrow with some cob and a bale.
Thanks for the input.
-
What is a garb?
Garbanzo bean, or chickpea. Essential ingredient in hummus. Garbs make whitetails fat and happy.
-
Lookin like rain for my Palouse tag for the weekend. Going to try and still hunt them through timber above a river bottom and below ag ground. Big low pressure system moving in on Tuesday for the last day of season that should be good if I need it!
-
Bring your rain gear, anywhere around or above Spokane
-
I'll be hunting my gov tag starting the 20th. Weather looks perfect for 4-5 days there.
-
In 127 big boys are still not interested much in does. Little ones the only ones chasing still. Should start changing this weekend . This guy is still just in to eat. 4.5yr old
-
That buck has potential
-
He may peak my interest next year. He’s made nice gains since last year. Hope I have him on cam after dec 15th. Then I’ll buy multi season and hunt him.

have any promising bucks you’ll be after?
-
Yeah, but I haven’t actually seen them yet this year. I haven’t checked cams since Sept, though.

well I hope you connect with a stud!
-
Saw a big buck running a doe yesterday. He didn’t slow down for me. I tried rattling twice, no action. I only saw one other whitetail. Density seems down, but I guess that’s the new norm. I was more interested in Muleys so didn’t put much time into it.
-
Two medium bucks pushing does across on my way to where I’m hunting this AM. Hopefully a good sign!

I got a bale and some cob dropped this weekend. The cubes I dropped in Oct got hammered. Lots of smaller bucks, the activity in the first few days was the best. with does showing daily. I likely wont get back down there till after Thanksgiving. Will be returning with more cob and another bale then and will check the cams again to see if any shooters showed up.
-
I got my deer last night he was right behind a doe maybe fifty yards. First buck I have had come in during daylight this year.
-
Just got back from GMU 121 near the town of Hunters and saw very little movement. Lots of fresh scrapes in the area but no daylight buck activity and only a few paired up does running around in mid morning. If I had to guess, I'd say the recent mild weather has really put a hamper on activity. Opening day of archery should be great though.
-
I agree. Been hunting 124. little dinks chasing does but i couldnt drum up a shooter. Was a good season for me, got to hunt a fair amount and got to do the wall tent elk camp for 5 days in idaho. So although i didnt kill, had a great time. Late season rifle hunters could have used some colder weather and some snow would have helped. Had a grunting competition with a buck this morning. He won in the end cause i never seen him
-
Around my place has been very active with older age class bucks the last 2 days chasing does.
-
Saw a nice 4x4 following a doe yesterday morning, but otherwise nothing. Saw numerous does over 3 days of hunting in unit 124 with not a buck in sight.
-

just out of curiosity, where is your place, roughly speaking? Have you had colder temperatures the last few days than those of Spokane?
-
Older bucks around here have now started chasing does around.
-
Thanks for the scouting report Huntn. Late archery looks to be nice with some colder weather and snow heading this way. Good luck out there y’all!

Ditto...A few rubs here and there but no scrapes. Temps were much colder during the early modern season. Even the smaller bucks did not seem to have an interest. I did see quite a few does and several solo mature does but no buck activity.
-
I guess it just depends on where you're at. The 5 point I killed on Sunday had 7 does with him and his neck was fully swollen!

Around my house south Spokane valley. We always have does around and spikes but we get 3-5 days a year that larger bucks come around the neighborhood.
-
The 4x4 we got the 14th was just starting to stink, he was with 4 does. I’d pin him at about 3.5 yrs, he was in unit 111. In my experience the rut is really going good during the first week of late muzzy in 113 and the bucks are in lockdown with does after that.
-
Saw no scrapes in the 113 during the last week. Couple of fresh rubs.
-
Bucks were going ape *censored* today
-
Scrapes are a pre rut deal. Once the full swing of rut starts where bucks are going nuts chasing does they abandon scrapes and traditional run lines . When the rut begins to start winding down bucks will return to scrapes in hopes of finding a hot doe. It’s now the peak rut around here bucks are searching and chasing .

Moe I pm'd you!

Me and son tagged out in 105 on Monday. I had been seeing buck on camera, never in shooting light. Had a doe in field he was heading for 10 minutes left for shooting. Discovered doe had activated trail cam, got the hit on video. He was stinking and neck swollen. Trying for elk next.
-
I'm headed to Springdale for Archery on Monday. I'm excited to see wants on camera. Any more info on rut activity in this area? Weather looks good.
-
Probably ebbing a bit by Monday but only because they have been going 100% the last three days. So sort of like taking your foot off the gas at 100mph and coasting downhill.
-
Had a camera set on a trail 3 days and all 3 days rutting bucks running past. Camera is for elk though which are hiding in the deep. And the bucks were moving from 6:30 to noon-2 and 4. All around daylight. Only 1 was on camera at night.
-
I ran into one medium 6x6 bull. He wasnt interested in a photo shoot.
-
My North camera had nothing but night pics with several different bucks following behind does. My South camera, which is located 2 miles away has nothing but day time pics with rutting activity. Opener looking good to me. And I won't be picky. (124)
