Title: Painted another shotgun.
Post by: Kain on April 04, 2009, 12:58:31 PM: Remington 870 Express Supermag. Synthetic stock. I stripped down all the metal except for the internals and repainted. The factory matte finish rusts to easily. Won't have to worry about that any more.

Here is my take on rattlesnake skin on a shotgun.

I was not happy with the standard fishnet stockings look for scales. I had been looking around for a material that would work for scales and found it at Wal-mart. It was a mesh laundry bag that was around where you find clothes pins and moth balls. It is similar to this (http://"http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=9730038") but didnt come with the frame.

Once you have the mesh the rest is kinda simple.
First step is to paint the item black.

Next is to get the mesh on the item so that it lays flat. Any where that it isnt tight you will get under spray and you will loose your scales. I spray the mesh with some spray adhesive and let it dry for about 5 minutes. Then with some finessing and clothes pins I got it to lay flat. This is by far the hardest part.

Next is to paint the item with your base color. I chose a beige-khaki color.

Then lay out the diamond patterns with some brown.

The outline the diamonds with black and then white outside the black.

I went back with the brown and added some darker sections between the diamonds and darkened the diamonds themselves.

This is my favorite step because it really makes all the colors pop. I take transparent yellow with a couple drops of the brown and thin it with reducer. Spray everything.

Next go back with a little black and pick a few scales to fill in. This breaks up the straight line that dont look natural. I also add some black to the area between the diamonds.

Next I brighten the white around the diamonds and fill in a few scales to break up the lines a little.

Remove mesh and clear. I used a flat clear but the picture was taken while it was still wet. So you get an idea of what it looks like gloss.

Post by: Kain on April 05, 2009, 08:28:09 PM: Thats funny that you said that because everyone I showed it to was surprised I planned on hunting with it. It has about four coats of and enamel clear coat on it so it should be as durable as any painted gun. I wont have to worry about rusting but it can still be scratched. But that is true with any gun. If the scratch doesn't make it through the clear I can sand it out and reclear any time.

Hopefully the sound of the 870 jacking a shell in would be enough. If not it will be the last thing he sees.

I think the actual paint only took about four hours with dry times. It is the prep and covering with mesh that takes some work. You dont want to skimp on this part. You dont want a paint job that looks awesome but isnt going to last because you didnt prep right. Wash with wax & grease remover then I sanded down the synthetic stock and all the metal (I use 320 grit). Mask everything you dont want painted. Then wash it all down with wax & grease remover to make sure there is no oil left from gun cleaning or your hands. I used Krylon Fusion Camo black on the stock cause it really seems to stick to the synthetic stocks. The metal I primed in black. For the colors I use water based automotive paint. It is fade resistant and is made to be clear coated. I would charge $150-200 to paint a gun and $75-100 for just the stock and fore-end.

Although the snake skin looks killer on the shotgun, I am going to go with more of the camo job. Just so you folks know, I called bowtech the other day to see if the wood dip it in their velvet camo (they put it on their bows), and they wont do single items, but, they will dip samples for $150. Like I said I will be trying a home paint job :chuckle: I will let you guys know how it comes out
